The problem with furloughs in government is that the employees are still expected to do the same amount of work. In the private sector, if an employer furloughs an employee then that employee doesn't produce any income for those days and thus both the emplyer and employee loose money. With the government only the employee looses. If the person who pays bills is furloughed for a week they are still expected to get all the bill paid. It's a loose - loose situation for the worker. Do the same amount of work in less time for less money.

Syracuse resident

I think this is a far better option than raising taxes. It increases my faith in Syracuse's city council and their ability to make good economic decisions. Times are tough and EVERYONE has to tighten their belts. Unfortunately, furloughs are necessary and are being utilized within the school district, private sector and city organizations. This recession has hit us all, but taxes are not the answer.

If you want your job

in the end you take the furlough. Having a job is not a loose-loose, goverment job or private sector.
