Cities and towns are being informed by the loss of these revenues that it is not business as usual and drastic and deeper cuts in its spending. Especially in the welfare and social services programs, the largest and least needed government programs. These programs are killing government revenues and the ability to maintain them. These services are not part of government responsibility and can take the deepest cuts without affecting government operations. And the people cannot be taxed to death to keep supporting welfare. With all the losses in the economy we do not want socialism in government to take over and the government cannot support socialism. Our recession and depression is not going away anytime soon and Utah must plan accordingly.
It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better. Current federal fiscal policy will lead to levels of inflation and higher interest rates that will make the early 80's seem like a joyful fairytale.
on hope that local govts. actually WILL adjust their out-of-control spending habits. But I DOUBT IT! Just like the legislature did last session, instead of making the cuts that are necessary they'll get more and more CREATIVE with how they raise funds. All local govts. have lost, a long time ago, the ability to say NO! They seem to want to fund everything that comes up. Its not THEIR MONEY afterall, so WHY NOT SPEND IT!
Pay more attention to the candidates running for election next election and remove those who continue to do the "same old"!
To Time to adjust: Welfare takes up 1% of federal spending and about 2% of state spending. Even if we eliminate it completely, it won't make much of a difference in total outlay.
To Professor: Most economists are more concerned by deflation than by inflation right now.
Government Motors is change for the worse.
The car makers are out for one thing...the almighty dollar. there is no loyalty to the dealers.
Also, perhaps cities and car dealers ought to take a look at selling more foreign brands who have been doing better than our American counterparts, like Honda and Toyota. Most of their cars are made in the US so people can't say that would affect jobs in this country. I am surprised that more US car manufacturers did not follow Honda and Toyota's business plan. They seem to make money while Ford, GM and Chrysler are bleeding green. And this bailout will only give the Us manufacturers more of an excuse to play dirty with the bailout money, even with government oversite...play nice in the short run and then back to bad business as usual and WHY NOT!? The politicians will be more than willing to bail them out! Thanks DC!
I find it interesting that Obama isn't going to give the government shares to the "People" of the nation. It's our company, what's the deal? Billions of Stimulous Dollars spent to Bankrupt GM and Crysler, while a "Auto Coupon" to each house for a Domestic Vehicle would have "Stimulated" the economy, helped to clean the Envirement by getting older cars off the highway in a "Great American Car Trade In", and poured the Coupon Money into the Car Companies! Couldn't do that though, WHY? Because Obama isn't for "We The People" he is for "The United States Of AmeriKa". You guessed it, he wants to Socialize the United States by having HIS GOVERNMENT TAKE OVER BIG BUSINESS, BIG BANKS, MORTGAGES, in time, MEDIA, FOOD, EVERYTHING THAT INVOLVES EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE my friends! Trust me this CUBA Thing is another HUGE STEP TO THE LEFT! December 2012 may not be the end of the "World", but it is going to be something Catestrophic to the "World As We Know It"! Just continue to WATCH THE DECLINE OF AMERIKA AND IT'S MOVEMENT TO THE EXTREME LEFT! The Dominos Are Falling!!! May God Save Us!
Why aren't cars selling? They cost WAY TOO MUCH in this shaky economy + the credit markets are still fairly frozen. Actually I am surprised to see how many people still have BIG expensive SUV's and Trucks and all brand new. People are working for companies that could lay them off in a heart beat and they still gotta go out and buy $30k+ cars. Go figure. Back in the 60's people were content to buy used but not today! No sir - gotta have that status symbol even though you may not have a job next week.
You seem obsessed with this Dec 21st 2012 thing of the Maya, and Nastrodamous and others. Here is the sad fact, with the way things are moving in the past 5 months in the U.S. and in the World, I am actually starting to see your point! The World won't come to an end, but you may be right, the world as we know it today just may! These changes coming so fast and seeming to increase in speed, it's not that far away, it really isn't! Maybe you are not so off the mark? If you are joking, observing all the stuff happening to our country in the past few months, this really is alarming! Gay Marriage, Socialism spreading right here in as you say, AmeriKa, even Iran and South America thinking under Obama America is more left than they are? What is to become of faithful one might ask? Be of Good Cheer, "The Meek Shall Inherit The Earth".
I can't tell if your post is a joke or not. I'm assuming it is, but it sounds too close to some of our nutties to be truly humorous.
the problem with government is that they won't cut spending in the correct areas, they will keep their extravagant programs and tell us they have to cut basic service like police and fire. That way they will get people to support the next tax increase. By the way, how's that hope and change workin' for ya!
