Heck No

Well they sure like to bend it to their way. The current process allows for the employees the right to vote in private. If the Free Choice passes the unions will only need 50% plus 1 in just a SIGNATURE to come in and unionize. What makes that "Free Choice". They will bully and lie to people about signing the card and next thing you know, Union. I encourage everyone to read about the act and get their information from anyone other than the Union Members that want to take your money to finance their life. I bet most of them could not hold down a real job.

Hey Heck No

Next time you see power linemen out in a wicked storm, tell them they do not have a real job. How about firefighters and police officers. There are a lot of union workers making your life better every day. They are not taking your money, they are getting what they legitimately bargained for with their employer to support their families. It's a given that there have been abuses, but it goes both ways. Ever hear of the railroad barons or mine owners before there were unions? Finally, some of these terrible unions have made it better for all workers. Bone up on your history.

re: Heck No

If a company doesn't want a Union, all they have to do is pay more that any other company around does.

The Anaconda mines in Montana did that,
and MicroSoft does the same thing today.

Unions are the way to get the man high up on the Eastside bench to take care of those who put him there.

If you got an education - thank a Union.
If feel safe from crime - thank a Union.
If you need the fire department - thank a Union.
If you see a Doctor - thank a Union.
If you have a 40 hour work week - thank a Union.
If you were never a child laborour - thank a Union.
If you have Medical Insurance - thank a Union.
If you ......

Organized labor

How many workers in Utah are not happy with their jobs and how they are treated? How many have tried to organize a complaint with the state department of labor and workforce services? Not many because it is illegal in Utah with the Right to Work laws that business hides behind to prevent labor from organizing at all. Most disasters and job injuries happen because no business in Utah can be held accountable for how it endangers and mistreats its workers. Ever noticed that only the federal government has ever done anything about labor law violations in Utah? That's because that is the only labor law Utah has, and it's abused with deaths all the time. Workers cannot organize against an employer in Utah unless they have union representation to fight the injustice of the Right to Work law. Any law that discourages organized labor and favors Utah employers is not a good law and perpetuates substandard wages and benefits. Unions do get corrupt leaders but you can't ignore our own government and the widespread corruption it is riddle with. These same people writing our labor laws are also the major employers of the state.

No Way

There was a time in American History when Unions played a roll in protecting the employees from the old Straw Boss mentality. However, there are too many laws on the books now to force employers to treat employees as they should be treated. The reason union membership is way down in Utah has nothing to do with the mormon culture. Nice try. It's because this is a right-to-work state and the only benefit a union employee gets that a non-union empoyee gets is legal representation in an employment hearing. The only value the union plays in today's society is to protect the jobs of the worthless employees that should be fired. Which in the end, only places more burden on the good employees who aren't union. I see it everyday. This is a bad bill which will only be bad for business. People don't like to be intimidated by union members and this will only cause more strife in the workplace.

"who currently can demand

they vote for union ratification in secret" Why is this portrayed as a burden? One of the freedoms of the United States is that we have secret ballots. This prevents anyone from being intimidated or coerced. If people intend to vote for and join a union having a secret ballot is NOT a barrier to doing so. You are naive if you think that coercion will not happen if a union can be formed by having a union representative give people a card to sign, right here, right now.

Dave

If your State has 10% unemployment and is bankrupt, thank a union.

Joe

Wow! A whole dozen people showed up! That's almost as many as the 15 people who showed up at the South Bend protest.

EFCA is a great union bill. However, it sux as far as helping working people. I remember when unions used to fight for legislation that helped workers, not removed their rights, like EFCA does. I think working people understand that, as exemplified by these type showings at rallies

Not Good

EFCA is not good legislation. The card signing concept to create a union can be confusing and misleading. I have seen some examples of the cards that could be used to get signatures. They make it appear that you are signing something that simply says that you are supportive of empoyee rights, etc. Everyone I know is supportive of employee rights. The cards say nothing about the union dues that could come from signing the card or spell out the potential results of signing. I think the secret ballot option is much better. I agree that there will be a lot of pressure from those who want a union to get other employees to sign cards. In a secret ballot system, you can voice your oppinion with less fear of being pressured by those who desire a union, because they will not know how you voted. A secret ballot also helps ensure that everyone voting knows what they are voting on. If empoyees want a union, that is fine, but simply signing a card is not a good method for union establishment. Some would sign not knowing what they have done.

Look at every industry that is struggling in America right now, and it is a highly unionized industry. Way to go UAW, you killed your golden goose at GM. Non-unionized car manufactures in the South are kicking butt and you guys are going under. The steel industry is gone. Do we really need to even mention the NEA and UEA and the roadblocks they put up to firing an incompetent teacher? The only industry growing through union "leadership" is government. There was a time the unions were important and they helped the working man, but that time has long since passed. They did get me one more paid holiday, Labor Day.

re: heck no

That is one of the dumbest comments I have ever read and shows that you are more worried about getting "the man high up on the east bench". You are filled with class envy instead of working your butt off and becoming "the man high up on the east bench". Also the only thing I can thank the union for with my education was keeping bad teachers in the system. The union has done nothing as far as educating one doctor, or me getting my health insurance. My city provides my police and fire protection, not the union. And I find it laughable that you attribute my feeling safe to the union when we all know about union thugs breaking the kneecaps of disenters and their ties to organize crime. That really makes me feel safe. And if a union is so safe, why is it that mine accidents happen in unionized shops? Ohhh because those mean nasty mine owners don't put in the required safety equipment. Than really how much power does the union have???

Union Sham

Secret Ballot is how we do it in a democracy. Open ballot is how they used to do it in Iraq and Russia.

Why don't unions support a secert ballot? Is it because they want to intimidate those who vote against the union? We all have all seen how violant union members can get against someone how crosses a picket line, now they want to possibly do it to those who vote no union.

Thanks GM

I am angered that Union represenatives have the nerve to even show their heads. We (USA) are currently bailing out GM (UNION) do we blame car sells, gas, HOW ABOUT UNREALISTIC WAGES AND BENEFIT PACKAGES FOR PEOPLE WHO PUT SCREWS INTO FLOOR PLATES? Yep, thank your UNION for that mess. I have a REALISTIC WAGE, REALISTIC BENEFITS and I don't expect my employer to pay me more for the work I do.

Unions have no right to know who anybody votes for, voting is personel and sacred.
You want the best example of unions...the state of California.
