If the FDA truly did protect the American people's health, why do they allow pharmateuticals to produce prescription drugs that 10 years ago listed as the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S., which has climbed today to be the 3rd leading cause of death?

Could you be more specific?

ChangeNow

Yes the FDA needs to change back to helping the people and not the rich.

However, that is no excuse not to do anything about Tobacco. Insanity is doing the same thing day after day expecting different results. This would be new action which may help. Lets try it.

And lets not accept our senators getting tobacco money. Actions by senators speak louder than words.

I note with interest that the leftist democrats in the committe that considered this bill rejected an amendment which would have added the regulation of marijuana to the duties of the FDA. Apparently regulating tobacco is alright, but controlling marijuana is not. Wonder who is smoking what in DC.

With the sordid history of tobacco companies, Hatch is wrong on this one. Orrin, did you accept contributions from them or their affiliates?

David

just another way for the government to rule over what you do and how you do it.

Slippery Slope

On the other hand, does Hatch oppose this bill because he sees it as a slippery slope leading toward regulation of all vitimins, minerals, herbal products, etc. as the pharmaceutical companies are trying to push through?

In other words, our freedoms are slowly vanishing and will disappear if we don't put our foot down sometimes.

Freedom

Wait a second here... You are telling me that smoking cigarettes are bad for me? You have got to be kidding me, I had no idea! Now the government wants to take control and inform everyone that smoking is bad for us? I am sure they are going to make it illegal to sell these things to kids from now on and stop any advertising of them and possibly put warnings on every pack!
What a FARSE! All these things have come to pass! This is just one more thing that the government is going to take control over! Next will be the banks, businesses, fuels, energy, and eventually food and water! Total government control is coming soon! Wake up sheeple or soon we will all be saying: Welcome to The United Soviet States of America!

Another example how politics trumps religion. Money is the real issue.

THe real issues

HOw much involvement do you want government to have in our lives,

HOw much regulation by government to want to have of your live and businesses?

How much power do you want GIVE the federal government?

Rather than legislate use of tobacco, why don't we just stop subsidizing the growers. It's about time we stopped paying people to grow products that harm our children and populace (or stop paying for empty farmland not being used). When the subsidies stop, fewer growers will produce, and the free market will regulate most of the use.

Stop the growth of Govt!

Hatch is right!
We should not have an underfunded political FDA regulate tobacco! Tobacco should be banned!

This "family smoking" act is not about protecting health...except as nice packaging. In fact, it endangers the public by ignoring, for all practical purposes, the threats of many pesticide residues in typical cigarettes, dioxin in smoke from the still-legal chlorine pesticides and chlorine-bleached paper, radiation from certain fertilizers, and even added burn-accelerants. This bill actually threatens to increase smoking rates by giving the FDA power to lower nicotine levels, what "lite" cigarettes do to prompt more, and deeper, smoking...and more sales. And more "sin" taxes.
Ask Hatch and the rest to simply prohibit any untested or know-harmful non-tobacco cigarette constituents. That would reduce risk, reduce harm, and even lower smoking rates. It would also eliminate the serious threat of Prohibition-style crimes and social disruptions.

the best thing that could happen if the fda can do it is take all the chemicals out of cigarettes .
Organic 100% natural ciggarettes , but we know that's not going to happen . Since they handed over regulating toxins in cigarettes to the fda you haven't heard a word about any changes theyv'e made . Any steps they take to get to get the addictive chemicals out of cigarettes is a step in the right direction .

And really , why not put marijuana to the fda and regulate it .
