Hasn't Mitt Romney helped Gary Herbert's political campaign with fund raising efforts in the past?

And now Mitt's son, Josh Romney, has expressed an interest in replacing Gary Herbert as the next Lt. Governor.

You've gotta love Utah politics... especially if Gary Herbert has any input on who will be the next Lt. Governor...
Jim | 9:49 a.m. June 2, 2009
Just great! Here's another wealthy hack trying to get even more wealthy in the lucrative field of politics in the good ole U.S. of A. Kind of makes you sick, and another Republican at that.

Why not? If your name is Romney isn't there a religious obligation to give him political power? "Do your duty" John D. Lee

Choosing Josh Romney as the next lieutenant-governor would give Gary Herbert access to Mitt Romney's money-- money that could be used for Herbert's 2010 election campaign for governor of Utah.
shameless aristocracy | 10:38 a.m. June 2, 2009
When did the United States become a British-style aristocracy with young "Lords" like Josh Romney entitled to public office without public experience? Are Utah voters so mesmerized by the names of LDS billionaires that we will let the Romney-Huntsman type families run the state forever?

This is just another example of why it is urgent for Utah voters to send Republicans a message that they can't take us for granted. Government for the rich by the the inherited rich is inherently damaging, as the Bush administration showed. Josh Romney could well be another W., the lesser son opf a rich man.
Jack Donaghy | 11:14 a.m. June 2, 2009
Okay lets look at his qualifications:
1. Campaigned for his dad.
a. Drove the Romney RV across American (WOW!)
b. Was interviewed on FOX News by Greta Van Susteren. (I loved his curly locks.)
2. He is a Developer.
a. He must understand Zoning Code
By these standards I think Donald Trump would make a better choice. What happened to all of the hype of Josh running against Matheson? I guess that would have required him to get elected, this way he is just appointed so it doesn't have to make sense.

If you'll recall, Caroline Kennedy didn't get the Senate position because people actually spoke up out there about what they didn't like about her. People here just discuss things in anon. passive aggressive jabs at each other on messageboards. I'm also glad you're as proud of not being from Utah as I am. Oh and for all those Obama haters out there...he went from poverty to Harvard. That kind of effort is supremely commendable. More effort than McCain who graduated 4th from the bottom of his class.

Wow!! Reading the article and subsequent comments, I am reminded why A). I don't read the Deseret News, and B). Why I am glad I moved far away from Utah three years ago.
It's ridiculous that this is even a story, and even more ridiculous if there is any real truth to his being considered.
I can't believe how willing so many people are to support him in the post only because of his name, not knowing one bit about his policy stances. Or if he knows one iota about government.
Also, to the man lamenting another "Democrat-lite." Who cares? If that's what seems to work for Utah (heaven knows ultra conservatives haven't helped the state or country), maybe it's time for the die-hard republicans to re-evaluate your positions, and not just automatically vote for the (R).

why Josh? | 12:50 p.m. June 2, 2009
These Romneys seem to just keep getting better, each generation improving on the last. Let's get ahead in the game. Josh has three kids. Why don't we just pick one of them? No doubt there is an even better Romney genius in the making.
EdA | 3:13 p.m. June 2, 2009
As a native Bostonian, it's incredibly amusing that anybody would consider any Romney for anything outside the private sector. At the same time that Mittens was calling for increasing our involvement in Iraq, exactly none of his multiple boys -- including Josh -- were serving their country in any way, other than trying (unsuccessfully) to get their father nominated. And it's still not too late now for him, or any of his brothers, to join the armed forces, especially since his father is calling for greater escalation of tensions. After all, Joe Biden's son is in Iraq, as is John McCain's, Jim Webb's, etc.

And how does Josh stand on gay rights? His father promised to be an even stronger supporter than Ted Kennedy. But was very much opposed when he became governor.

A question: As you know, Mittens didn't remember that he actually lived in Massachusetts until he decided not to run for governor of Utah, despite or because of his great work in getting taxpayers from other states to bail out the Olympics. Where does Josh think he lives?
Ace | 3:45 p.m. June 2, 2009
He enjoys serving his country. He served his country by trying to get his father elected president. Huh. Most of us serve in the military.
Re:EdA | 4:23 p.m. June 2, 2009
Surprised you Bostonians care? or have an opinion of Josh, given you elected his father, Gov of Mass. just a few years ago.....

Everyone in Utah know how smart you Bostonians are? Afterall, You continue to elect Kennedy following Chappaquidick which manifests your astonishing stupidity....good thing for the USA, that none of the 9-11 terrorists lived, they would have a political career in Boston!
Sam T | 5:30 p.m. June 2, 2009
Are the Romney's trying to emulate the Bush's dynasty building? I think a neutral, fair observer would agree that it has the appearance of impropriety.
anonymous | 5:43 p.m. June 2, 2009
The last thing we need is another kids born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I'm glad Huntsman is going. We don't need a Romney. Lets get someone who knows what it is like to work for something.
Missy | 6:19 p.m. June 2, 2009
I can't think of a worse idea than having Josh Romney as a Lt. Governor. If he gets handed this job with virtually no political experience whatsoever, then Utah deserves the bad reputation it already has.

On a personal note, I knew Josh Romney in college and he wasn't exactly the fine upstanding man with strong LDS values that some people seem to think he is now. I'm LDS, and I thought some of the things he did were NOT what I would consider all that honorable. Maybe he's grown up a bit since then, I sure hope so, because my opinion of him is pretty low.
Skippy | 8:43 p.m. June 2, 2009
We need Romney as the LT. governor
RCC | 8:17 a.m. June 3, 2009
Love all the hater comments. "Silver Spoon", blah blah blah. No poor man has ever given anyone a job. Unless you are talking about all the productive people providing a living and lifestyle to the unproductive sector in the form of subsidies and welfare. Regardless, it takes a brave and strong person to run for office. Let the people decide. Don't shoot Romney down from your cubicle on company time.
Question about Josh Romney. | 2:23 p.m. June 3, 2009
Is he as liberal as his father and grandfather?
An honest comment | 6:58 p.m. June 3, 2009
I've met Josh Romney before - I've read the comments on here, and I agree with the ones that discuss concerns about nepotism. I'm also a Latter-Day Saint, a meat eater, and a believer that capitalism is great for growth, but that cutthroat becomes such with the mentality that there must be losers in order for there to be winners. I've felt with both Mitt, and Josh an essence of arrogance. Mitt ironically seems to detach himself from the rest of the members of the church. He does have an arrogant edge to him that comes with being a business executive in such 'aristocratic' levels. I have followed Orrin Hatch recently, and my appreciation for him has been increased, and I say that utterly regardless of whether or not I were a Democrat, or a Republican. Orrin has a very keen eye that has been forged with years of experience, and he is dutifully attacking bail-outs. Mitt is a brilliant person who I think would also advocate things I'd side with. To me, frankly, politically there's nothing noteworthy I can say about Josh.
An honest comment II | 7:16 p.m. June 3, 2009
It does seem quite an odd thing to me as well that Harry Reed, and Mitt Romney belong to the same church. Harry Reed is an embarrasement as far as I'm concerned. Jon Huntsman Jr. is undoubtedly a silver spoon as well to large degree - an otherwise good man, but no kidding when people bring up these concerns that they do about aristocracy and nepotism etc. I do personally feel the George W. Bush was great up until the end of his presidency - the whole economic crisis for me personally is like seeing a party getting crashed that I was never invited to in the first place - and I'm supposed to be bailing these idiots out with my tax $'s? - forget it! - - How much do these people REALLY care about the people they're in service to? or are they measuring themselves above those who have legitimate needs and who struggle? - Honesty and politics are a rare mix, and I hate to be cynical, but I'm afraid that's the cold hard truth. Obama isn't a 'giant' of a person by any stretch, and Ronald Reagan needs to be resurrected.

one of the former guvs resigned a few years ago to become ag secretary to president bush. the lt govenor became govenor and his choice for lt governor was not a well known name here, but i think the choice that was made was really good. he seems to be laid back, does his job and goes with the flow. i had not heard of him till he was picked but i thought after i found out more about him that he was a really good choice. Nothing against romney because I dont know much about him in Utah but I know he rode around in a winnebago to all of iowas 99 counties. now that would have been an interesting to have visited with the people of iowa, eventhough i know he was campaigning for his father.
Good | 3:42 p.m. June 4, 2009
we should not write him off so fast. he should have a fair shake. I think he would be a great help to utah. He would get my vote. "Go josh." I hope you will run.
does he dye his hair too? | 6:39 p.m. June 4, 2009
I'm just wondering because clearly his dad does.
Here's YOUR sign, too!.... | 7:44 p.m. June 4, 2009
"does he dye his hair too? | 6:39 p.m. June 4, 2009
I'm just wondering because clearly his dad does."

And even if Mitt does die his hair, this would make him totally unsuitable as President because?....

You know, you're totally screwing up the liberal side's argument that only conservatives say stupid things when you post like that.
Bitter | 10:33 p.m. June 4, 2009
Your comments are all insane. You don't even know the guy (neither do I), yet you are attacking him like there is no tomorrow. Are you all "have-nots" who are just miserable with yourselves because you are upset with a family that has been successful? I was taken back by some of the comments. Lets see what Romney does. Give him a fair chance. Then make an educated decision.

Stop with all of the bashing based on his character. If you are going to judge him, judge him by his views and policy. After you have discovered about what he believes about different issues, then make a decision. Lets not be ignorant. That does not help anybody. Romney or his father should never apologize for being successful. All of those who are upset about that need to get over themselves.
Re: Bitter | 11:40 p.m. June 4, 2009
Where do you yourself draw the lines between cut-throat and capitalism, and nepotism v.s. legitimate hiring of accredited individuals? Would a people (LDS, or not) ever become forever too afraid to have a dissenting opinion against the rich and the famous? Could it be that two loyal LDS people can have utterly different political leanings? How well do the wealthy elite relate to the common individual? Evidently (for better or for worse, for worse) with the last election, Obama took it because he appealed to the 'bitter' majority - to a greater extreme, that's largely how Hugo Chavez gained his power in Venezuela - he built popularity through resentments that the lower class had for the upper class, and then that everyone had for the U.S. But where do you draw those lines? How far do you go with adulation of those who have inherited more money than many will make in 50 lifetimes? How loose do you leave the reigns on those who would otherwise brush off the needs of the needy in a sneeze of their exuberant lifestyles? Regardless, it seems the country is suffering from reverse bias on a large scale.

If the guy is even half of what is father his, he would and could be a great leader for Utah and potentially for the country.
Your duty | 8:57 a.m. June 5, 2009
There's too many scriptural examples of the fact that, 'when ye have done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have done it unto me', and often left out, 'when ye have NOT done it unto one of the least of these, my brethren, ye have NOT done it unto me'. There will undoubtedly be a separation between the sheep and the goats because that's the word of God, and it's not exactly something that can be altered. So who is one to 'judge' another? They're not, however, in politics we have the freedom to question and probe, and make sure that our tax $'s are being delegated well - if we do not have that, 'we the people' teeters between socialism and oligarchy. Yet, as 'Latter-Day Saints', good works that are done to be seen by the public eye (as those that are nearly required to be a successful politician) clash with acts of kindness that nobody knows about except the individual and God. We do, nonetheless, have every obligation to verify an individual's integrity for public offices and shouldn't be hushed into ignorant complacency.

I wonder if Josh "flip flops" on the issues as often as his father does?
