Why, exactly, is he a great selection?

He certainly looks like a happy man in his picture. :-)

I hope as he tackles funding, he'll demand accountability for that which is already spent. I also hope that he stays out of bed with the UEA and NEA. I hope he won't be bullied by them.

Wouldn't it be great if he kicked all of them out? Wouldn't it be great if we could pull away from the US and brought education back to at least a state level? US funding is minimal compared to state funding. But, I'm only dreaming because the US has way too much control and isn't going to give up the brainwashing of our children easier if ever. I can still hope can't I?

What are the odds that one guy moves up this high and his wife moves up that high too.

Hmmmmmmmmm. Insiders move together, as we say in higher education.

He has a cheesy smile.

Another super lib who thinks that condoms and needles should be in the classroom. Why can't we get someone in line with the majorities values?

Did it ever occur to you that Mary Shumway, Larry's wife could have worked her way to where she is right now, prior to marrying Larry? Should she be punished for a lifelong career? She is extremely capable and is full of integrity. We are lucky that she is where she is. We are also lucky to have Larry as the new superintendent. Please, get an education and try to think before you speculate.

Mary Shumway has been at the State office of education for how long??? Oh, 22 years. Perhaps she has paid her dues and deserves to be where she is. Get a grip.

Mary Shumway has worked at the State office for 22 years. Larry just started there in 2005. Try reading the story!

Everyone that is so happy that Shumway is the new state supe only knows of him and not the other candidates. For once I was hoping we could get someone from outside of Utah and outside of the LDS church in one of our top positions (and I am LDS).

This is a disaster for Public Education in Utah. Larry Shumway is inaccessible, unresponsive and opinionated. He doesn't listen, and his interpersonal skill are horrid.

Please don't stay long.
Congratulations!! | 8:46 p.m. May 30, 2009
I have worked with Mary for years. She has taken Career and Technical Education in the State of Utah to a new level. Utah is a leader in Career Pathways, Work-Based Learning and Comprehensive Guidance all of which Mary has played a key role in and the nation is looking to Utah to lead the way. Please don't judge Mary or degrade her for her husbands appointment. She works hard and works countless hours for the students in Utah. The students are in her best interest and she deserves credit. You will see Mary at student competitions and many times in schools observing CTE programs. She knows what is happening in schools. She is also a wonderful mother who does a great job at balancing an amazing career and being a loving mother. Her child means everything to her. I hope that she continues in the position of Career and Technical Education Director. I don't see why her husbands new job assignment should impact her job status. Thank you Mary for a job well done. If Larry is anthing like you, the Education System in Utah has some great years ahead of them.

Can someone explain to me why the State Superintendent, district superintendents and administrators are making 6 figures and teachers max out at 60,000! And don't get me started on School board memebers! You know how we can fund public education? Clean out the top levels of Administration!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Eliminating and streamlining districts will save MILLIONS!
