When we lived in Ohio we would pay for our trash and recycling was free. Everyone recycled. Someone should mention that.

Anon: Sorry, but there is no such thing as free recycling. I had a similar experience in Oregon. The cost of recycling was just built into the trash collection rate. You pay the rate whether you recycle or not. In that case, why not recycle?! Wish that more communities in Utah would do it.

When all the energy costs are calculated, recycling of household waste seldom makes sense. I applaud the city's effort to allow residents to opt out of the program. Too many feel-good environmental programs involve increased fees, governmental coercion and scaremongering. If people want to pay to recycle, more power to them.

Your numbers are False.
You have stated and opinion, the facts are different.

Finding, extracting, and then refining raw materials is 10X as expensive as recycling exisiting materials.

Recycling is not only cheaper, but the companies who collect and recycle are making a profit.

In Seattle, recycling was not only FREE - but residents had their collection bill REDUCED by $10 per month, also encouraging residents to recycle.

It just the right thing to do.
