What Utahns don't want to face | 1:38 p.m. May 29, 2009
here's a clue to boost math and science education in the state... pay more for educators.

I thought we already had a pretty heavy math and science curriculum in the schools. Why don't we just get rid of all the arts and history classes, that will free up some more room. In my opinion, more isn't the answer, better is the answer.

Yes, keep boosting math and science since being able to communicate in an articulate manner and being able to read are deemed as no longer important to society. What happened to being well-rounded? Sooner or later society will reap the repercussions of limiting the educational scope...other countries that have stressed mathematics and science for so long are already beginning to see what the loss of teaching culture does to a society.

I would like to add to this discussion. It is an important one to have. The issue is not how many classes of math and science to teach or require. It is the discussion of how to best attract great minds and then to keep them.
Another discussion is how to recognize great minds in embryo. After finding them, how to keep them stimulated.

We are very sensitive in Utah culture to elitist cultures that tend to surround "great minds". And we seek to diffuse specialization.

Another issue is that when the founder of a company is ready to retire, he sells his company to the highest bidder, which is most often an outside company that is not interested in keeping patends and inventions and their profit in Utah.

Another issue is creating a nurturing rather than disparaging culture for all disciplines. I have seen that on the Primary and Secondary levels that we do not have the time to teach every subject. They must be taught in a whole education instead of in detached and unrelated programs.
