I wish I knew him better -- even though I live pretty close to him.

He is an awesome man and brought an awesome spirit into everything he did.

Our hearts and prayers go out to the Madsen family.
We will all miss Brother Truman Madsen.

For an entire generation of Mormon scholars, Truman G. Madsen represented the best about our Mormonism and a scholarly excellence we all aspired to.

His passing diminishes us and yet prods us all to become better.

Best wishes to Ann and their family.

He was a truly inspiring man.

Devin Grant

The man was remarkable! I learned more uplifting and inspiring spiritual insights from him about the Prophet Joseph Smith than any other professor at Brigham Young University.

Janet Hovorka

Truman Madsen was a brilliant man. I have fond memories of being with him and Anne at BYU study abroad in Israel. I have learned so much from both of them. He will be terribly missed.

Michael Benson

I was fortunate enough to work for Dr. Madsen at the BYU Jerusalem Center when he served as director. He was an amazing scholar and even better human being. Our thoughts go out to Ann and his family.

He will be long-remembered for his oratory, his scholarly work, and his passion for the Middle East. God bless you, Truman Madsen.

I will always consider Truman as the guide who showed me the beauty of the restored gospel.

Truman G. Madsen loved lighting the minds of all who knew him with the wisdom and truth which he contemplated and discovered. His insights and radiant life serve as a profound reminder to us all of the beauty and grace which this life affords. His profound influence on my life are second only to that of my father. He will be missed by all. As he would say, "Blessings!" to Ann and his entire family.

I will always Bro. Madsen sitting in my parents living room in 2004, teaching us about the Prophet Joseph. Truman was a great man and good friend. My love to Ann and their family

What a great man.

Dan Allen

I worked for him for many years, and I lived in his home for several years. He was a remarkable man, with a unique understanding of LDS doctrine and how it related to the philosophies of the world. He knew the Prophet Joseph's teachings better than anyone that I have known. He will be greatly missed.

Steve

I was one of his philosophy students. He was a great professor. They will never be able to replace him.

Adam

The Joseph Smith lectures were amazing, a life changing experience for me. Great lecturer, great man.

What a blessing to have known Truman--first from afar as my favorite stimulating speaker & then later as a kind & generous friend. He & Ann are truly a remarkable couple.

how sad

My sister and I met him in Boston the fall of 1999, at a LDS singles weekend on Harvard campus, he was kind and talkative about where my sister served her mission in England; he always had energy and knew each moment was a teaching moment. He was not shy to be profound at the pulpit, and to push the limits with his oratory skills. How many of us could study philosophy at Harvard in the 1950's and still remain true to the faith? He and his wife were quote the team, both deeply profound and curious.

Condolences

I've only had the opportunity to know Bro. Madsen through his writings. I always enjoyed stretching my mind to better understand his words. He truly showed that there can and is a way to not only search the gospel deeply but to open our minds to other thoughts that encouraged us to think harder.

I express my condolences to the Madsen family. In your mourning, take comfort knowing he believed in the Savior and was prepared to serve Him any way he could. God Bless.

Brad

I was introduced to Brother Madsen's teachings on the Prophet Joseph Smith on my mission in Cleveland, Ohio. Another Joseph Smith scholar gave a lecture on Joseph Smith and we asked him afterward what he thought of Truman Madsen. He said he was the most like the Prophet Joseph Smith of any man that he knew. May he rest in peace and his family be comforted by the knowledge that he endured to the end and is serving on the other side.
