i can find nothing in this story that indicates we actually need more engineers to fill jobs.

are engineering firms laying off engineers? i know they are laying off surveyers and engineering technicians and draftsmen. what we need it funding for projects.

Utah has always exported engineers and scientists, which is to say we are training them at the states expense for jobs in other states.

local companies have long found that they can always hire engineers that want to move back home to Utah, and then lay them off when the job is through or cutback come, and make then take whatever they can find. sell cars or insurance.

This is one of the most misguided iniatives I've ever seen. The problem is not that Utah doesn't graduate enough engineers its that there are no jobs for engineers in the state. The few companies that do hire engineers in utah no they have the upperhand and basically are running white collar sweat shops. Economic development means you create jobs it doesn't mean you graduate more engineers to drive taxi cabs.

I don't have a problem with increasing our capacity to train engineers. However, in what fantasy land will this $2 million help the Utah economy rebound? Please stop the hyperbole. . .
