It's nice to see some recognition that the pioneers had no intention of being Mexican citizens when they came to what was then an unoccupied Mexican territory. However, there can be little doubt that Brigham Young would have been more comfortable in a new independent country, completely free from the bigotry extant in 1847 America. Of course, Washington politicians had no intention of allowing the Great Basin to slip out of the growing American Empire.
