... and let the consequence follow. In other words this should not be a political calculation, but an exercise in integrity. Many of us would respond positively to this, more than anyone might have calculated.

You'd think chances are better for a dark horse this time as big names either don't want it or can't afford the "cheap" job. Among the dark horse legislators you mention, Hughes could well be a lightning rod despite the results of his hearings, and Menlove is well tied to the UEA, which wouldn't likely go well at convention. If you take away a strong UEA affiliation, an anti-voucher balance in the ticket probably would not otherwise hurt at convention, and surely help in the general.
Greg Hughes!?! | 2:38 p.m. May 24, 2009
Frank and LaVarr, are your heads in the sand? How could Greg Hughes be described as either likeable or charismatic? How could a hung jury party-line 4-4 vote by an ethics commission with a letter telling him to watch it be interpreted as being "unanimously exonerated???"

Instead of words like "charismatic" and "likeable," most of us plebians find words like "caustic," "bombastic," "arrogant," and "power hungry" more appropriate.

But we're just the common folk. I think your insider political circles skew your sense for what is reality, which is why so many are so sick of politics and politicians, both national and local.

Hughes and LaVarr are buddies. Hughes was not unanimously exonerated - he was let off on a 4-4 partisan vote. Hughes and Herbert have zero college degrees between them! We'd be a national laughingstock to have them running our state. The promotion of Hughes by LaVarr Webb is nothing more than shameless opportunism - Hughes is good for LaVarr's lobbying business. Hughes is a sell-out.

Governor Herbert isn't saying much about a potential pick for Lt. Gov. and God Bless him for that.

Clearly, there is no 'leak' or 'source' that has any knowledge of his thinking, which must infuriate those who are used to inside info.

Herbert and his long-time adviser and trusted Chief of Staff, Joseph Demma, are doing a fantastic job of keeping things under wraps.
Unanimously exonerated???? | 8:35 p.m. May 24, 2009
The only thing the ethics committee did unanimously was send Greg Hughes a letter telling him his conduct was unbecoming a member of the House. Letter is public, signed by each and every member of the ethics committee, R and D.

How could Frank and LaVarr omit that???

You forgot to mention the best potential LG - James Evans. Former Senator and County Party Chair. Incredibly popular with the delegates and Party faithful as well as a pragmatic legislator.
