Exciting news | 10:34 p.m. May 20, 2009
I couldn't be happier or more excited that Herbert will be our next governor. He will be one of the best the state has ever seen. If you have a chance to go hear him speak, make sure you go. He's genuine, honest, hard working and says it how it is. Utah is in good hands.

It would be nice to have a white, middle-aged, super wealthy, mormon male for a change.

Herbert is clearly prepared for this job. In my opinion, he has more combined experience as a executive in the political and business realm than any and all who came before him. I am excited to see who he selects as Lt. Governor.

What about SUPER DELL! He fits the republican right-wing ultra conservative profile. Hannity, Rush, and Cheney would agree.

"I can tell you of all the decisions I am going to make, there will be none more important than lieutenant governor."

Is he kidding??? IS HE KIDDING????
Hey! | 7:37 a.m. May 21, 2009
I'll take the job of new lt. governor. Or better yet... there are plenty of unemployed in the state... that would like a job. Maybe he could split the job into parts and hire a whole cadre of unemployed homeless... could fix two problems with one solution!
I feel sorry | 7:44 a.m. May 21, 2009
for those who think that the qualifications for Lt. Gov. include a person's race, gender or age. Here's hoping that Gary chooses someone based on their ability to do the job rather than their match to a genetic profile arbitrarily selected by a few outspoken bigots.

sees himself as a libertarian, not a conservative and certainly not a Republican.
Re: Steve | 7:56 a.m. May 21, 2009
NO!!!!!!!!!! I don't think he's KIDDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great Comment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Opposing Ticket | 8:40 a.m. May 21, 2009
I'd love to see a Beattie/Jowers ticket run against Herbert and the far-right crazies.
To Steve | 8:56 a.m. May 21, 2009
You ought to take a look at the responsibilities of the Lt. Governor and then decide how important it is for him to select a capable Lt. Governor. Amongst other things, he's in charge of water, elections, transportation, and homeland security...but none of those really effect you do they.

I love it when people have no idea what they're talking about.

Lets make a clean sweep of moving Utah back in history. Just bring on Buttars from West Jordan, and the LDS Republicans will have exactly what they want in office.

Such a shame. Couple steps forward with Leavitt and Huntsman, 10 steps back with Herbert and whatever Untra-Conservative he picks as Lt.

I support Gary Herbert for Gov.

We need clean energy, clean air, clean water, clean land and energy independence. We also need to encourage energy efficiency and technologies such as ground source heat pumps.

We may not agree with each other re: CO2 cap/trade, taxes, or our effects on climate.

We do need more renewable energy. Coal is reportedly being removed fast enough in Utah that it could last only 15 to 45 years for use in Utah at current rates.

We will need more electricity to offset a reduction in the use of foreign oil, and we can't afford to just rely on coal.

Do we have existing dams that we could add hydro power to, without putting more land underwater, hurting our rivers and/or wildlife?

It has been pointed out that renewable energy will help the state's economy in places that coal, or gas won't. Renewable energy being added to the mix will increase the life of the Utah coal economy.

Having goals to rely on renewable energy and energy savings to make up the increased demand on power is good.

Enid Greene still around?.......LOL!!

All I can say is "huh?" I have a lot of friends that are "LDS Republicans," not one of us supports Buttars. In fact, he is more of an embarrassment then anything. Nice try though.

On another note, it really is a big decision to decide on a Lt. Governor. This person is next in line if something were to happen. They are also in charge of many important things (another post mentioned these.) It's not something to be taken lightly.

Who does number two work for!!!????
butters? | 12:02 p.m. May 21, 2009
Butter's has been reported to have stacked the deck at the precinct meetings to get elected.

Why else would West Jordan elect him, other than the democrat running did something really dumb and invited supporters to a saturdays voyer night, offensive to one of the local churches, leaving west jordan voters with two bad choices, one they already knew.

What has that got to do with the article?

re: 10:57AM | 1:18 p.m. May 21, 2009
Apparently you didn't read many of these message boards each time Mr. Buttars made one of his racist/demeaning comments. If you had, you would have realized the strong support he has from many LDS Republicans in Utah.
RE: I feel sorry.. | 1:48 p.m. May 21, 2009
"hoping that Gary chooses someone based on their ability to do the job..." What? Is this the ability to show up for every wacko event thrown by the Sutherland Institute? Or is this the ability to be in charge of elections but refuse to intervene even when the law is being broken? Or is this the ability to survive long enough for the sitting Governor to move on? Regardless, I haven't seen a "skilled" Lt. Governor since Olene Walker. Utah stopped requiring skills for office a long time ago.
WOW! | 3:22 p.m. May 21, 2009
To the person who replied to "I feel sorry" at 1:48-you REALLY have no idea what you're talking about. Do you think the Lt. Gov just cuts ribbons and kisses babies all day? Go to the Lt. Govs website and look at his responsibilities and then tell me it doesn't take a skilled person to be in that office. And Olene Walker? At least Governor Huntsman has given the Lt. Gov some responsibility now. Back when she was in office, she hardly had any at all. Elections and that's about it. Lets not forget that the Lt. Gov has to be capable enough to be Gov some day. Gary Herbert is above and beyond capable.
headline | 3:56 p.m. May 21, 2009
I might choose a slightly differently worded headline. D-News, I though you were a family paper!
little wow | 4:06 p.m. May 21, 2009
Realtor, county commissioner, no college degree, bugngled elections and ethic issues, utah county conservative, listens to folks, well mannered. Qualifications are about the same as any other average Utah politician, no more, no less.
How | 5:42 p.m. May 21, 2009
about Dennis Salisbury of Duchesne County?
Pappy | 6:29 p.m. May 21, 2009
What is Herbert's postion on illegal immigration?
Been there | 6:32 p.m. May 21, 2009
I think Lt. Governor Herbert should consider SLCo. Counciman and former Council chair Mike Jensen. Councilman Jensen has shown sound judgement in his decisions. The combination of Herbert and Jensen would also have the appearance of upholding the conservative ideology of smaller government.
pick SUPER DELL | 10:03 p.m. May 21, 2009
go SUPER DELL-
Austin | 10:13 p.m. May 21, 2009
When he finally does pick a No.2, exactly WHO will No.2 be working for?
Interested Observer | 10:13 p.m. May 21, 2009
Gary Herbert will be a solid Governor. I think that he will pick a conservative with (1) a solid legislative track record, (2) the financial independence to take the job (the job pays under $80K), (3) from Salt Lake or Davis Counties, and (4) who is patient enough to wait for Herbert to serve two terms.

This would narrow the list to Killpack, Hughes, Liljenquist, Niederhauser or Garn.

Jowers is an unlikely choice. While he is a media hound, he will have a lot of statements to explain to Conservatives where he has been less than complimentary. I also don't think they will appreciate statements like "I am a big fish in a small pond." It would be a bad move to pick Jowers.

Should be fun to watch how this rolls out.
do you know? | 7:45 p.m. June 12, 2009
why attack gary herbert when you probably don't really have a clue as to his talents and abilities. as to being a moromon or white or male, who cares? time to get over your biases.

So who is on the Short List? Valentine, Carlene Walker...?
