Congratulations Rampton families! This serves you right.

Could there be a less-dignified monument to the former governor? A gargantuan, monolothic, concrete testament to a hopeless economic model: conventioneering. What were Becker's words? "May we always be locked in a combative death-spiral with the other desperate mid-size cities of our crumbling country"?

Yet more TAX payer dollars spent in places it shouldn't be spent in these tough economic times!!!!! Hey MR, the man is dead, he doesn't have any money. So if tax payer money shouldn't be used to name things then I guess nothing should be named. Moss Courthouse, Matheson Courthouse, Bennett Federal Building, State Street, 2100 S.

Give it a rest people, the whoa is me attitude gets a little old.

As for the convention center, it is actually one of the larger centers in the country and brings MILLIONS of taxes into the city, county and state every year. As do the countless tourism dollars coming in.

If you read the article and know anything about the man you will realize that we our state is as economically healthy as it is in large part due to his efforts. For many decades Utah has had the strongest most resilient economy in the nation, and despite the current recession we still do and are projected to be the first state to emerge from it, in large part thanks to former Gov Rampton.

So stop crying about how horrible everything is, get off your butts and do something about it. THE END!

In Rampton's own biography, there is not one word about his involvement in the building of the original Salt Palace or for that fact any convention facility in Utah. The Salt Palace Convention Center was the result of tireless effort on the part of County Commissioner Marvin Jensen. Jensen endured lawsuits from Salt Lake Mayor J. Bracken Lee with no support whatsoever from Governors Clyde or Rampton. The honor of this great facility and its contribution to Utah's economy rests solely with Jensen.

If this is the only reward this man receives, I guess he deserves it. But Why? He's a relic, the Salt Palace is here and now and it will always be the Salt Palace to me, name it whatever you want.

To: RE: Marv Jensen not Rampton 11:20a May 20, 2009.

Your mostly correct. However, it took 2 out of 3 votes by the SL County commission to approve and move forward on construction of the original Salt Palace. The swing vote was cast by Commission Chairman Phil Blomquist. Commissioner Blomquist was a republican who ran for office while opposing the Salt Palace. After being elected and in better position to understand the pluses and minuses, he changed his position and voted for the Salt Palace. The rest is history -- one of the better govt. decisions in our history..! I suggest a statue of Mr. Jensen nodding towards Mr. Blomquist.

Btw, today's democrats should be a little better informed when it comes to SL area political history, and should have come up with something more relevant to Mr. Rampton's contributions.
