I wish my picnics looked as peaceful and picture-perfect! My kids would have that basket torn apart in no time.

Thanks for the "tips" and inspiration to break out of our drive-through KFC rut. But can we get Martha to come and make our picnics look that appetizing??? The sandiwich looked dang good on the gallery and those strawberries! Just curious, where was this basket/salad/etc photo shot?

I don't think it's very penny-wise to "invest' in a cooler on wheels. But it's true that you don't come out that much ahead when you make potatoe salad. But my family likes mine better than anything you can find at the grocery store. Just a thought, if you can stretch your potatoe salad with frozen has browns, could you just make the salad completely out of hash browns and skip all the boiling and peeling fresh potatoes? Has anyone tried it?

Most important is the tip to limit yourself on all the stuff! We like to go up to Pineview Dam in the Ogden Valley, and sometimes it's quite a ways from the parking to find an empty picnic table. Take what you need to make it fun, but you're not camping overnight.

Thanks DN. I love these recipe articles. Can you come up with other salad recipes for a reception or wedding dinner?

Photo DOES look picture-perfect spread! Was this really in Utah or is it one of those "glamor" pix that the magazines use?

thanks , makes me want to plan a picnic this weekend instead of being stuck doing yardwork.

Picnics are fun. I like to go to the grassy area by the Jordan River Parkway. It's fun.
Antelope! | 8:56 p.m. May 20, 2009
One of the best undiscovered picnic spots is Antelope Island. There's lots of sand & sun, although we rarely go down to the lake , don't want to take on the brine flies. take your frisbees & your bikes, and take a side trip over to see the buffalo.
Lagoon A Beach! | 9:02 p.m. May 20, 2009
we like to take a picnic to Lagoon, there's lots of shady lawn in the Lagoona Beach area, and also a lot of picnic boweries. It's one of the few amusement parks in the country that still lets you bring in your own food, and a good thing because it would cost our family of 9 at least $100 for food if we didn't. (Almost offsets those mega-ticket prices.)
Mt. Timp | 9:13 p.m. May 20, 2009
You've got to do a picnic after hiking Mt. Timp- one of my favorites!~ Plain old Baloney Sandwiches never tasted better!.Something about the outdoors and a l ong hike that perks the appetite. And yah, the picnic photos look yum esp the angelfood & berries. Thanks for a fun read.
What's the big deal | 10:53 p.m. May 20, 2009
I used to do a lot of the stuff in the article, but it's a lot less hassel to just stop at the grocery store o and grab some hot fried chicken, salads, ham or cheese, buns, carrot sticks, even squeezeable PB &J. That way Moms can enjoy the day too.

Use unbreakable plastic containers for your picnic and limit what you have to carry.
