Underlying this argument is a profound lack of confidence in the people. It assumes in the absence of myth, civil society will collapse into despair.
Perpetuating the myth can thus be justified as a morally correct act. And those who reject the myth become a threat. They must be labeled as "Anti-Mormons", so that members know to avoid them, or at least to close their ears to them.
But who is the real "Anti-Mormon"? Is it the myth-maker who justifies a perpetuation of lies? Or is it the myth-breaker who liberates myths captives?
Who do we consider to be our "friends"? A real friend does not deceive us. I refuse to be labeled Anti-Mormon. I am Pro-Mormon. Those who would deceive my Mormon loved ones and associates are the Anti's.
You realize that based in this type of "tough love" argument, you could justify doing just about anything?
Your version of the myth just might be the deception itself. Since you provide no examples, I'll give a couple.
As a freshman in college, a professor revealed to the class that the Mormon seagull/cricket story was just a myth. OK, I thought, until a few years later when I read the actual contemporary eyewitnesss account of the event. So, our mythbusting professor was in fact the mythmaker.
Or perhaps you refer to some of the foundational events of the LDS Church? I have read just about everything that is out there, and have found the majority of alternative explanations to be as weak or weaker (and sometimes flat out dishonest) than the orthodox version. I am fortunate to have the time and interest to do the research. Many of my friends are not so lucky.
If you do not want your Mormon friends and relatives to be deceived, then don't do it!
Personally, I am not in a position to use it very much.
And for the detractors, well, nobody has ever asked me in a church interview or discussion if I watch BYUTV, KSL, read the DNews, buy from Deseret Book, etc, so there is no compulsion for anyone, LDS or not, to use this service either. That is exactly what it is: a service to benefit those who want it. And it does not harm to anyone else.
