Go Braves!

Mr. Jewkes, Just wanted to thank you for covering the story. The sport gets precious little coverage here in the state and we're grateful for anything. The Tribune doesn't even seem to be aware the event happened - which seems silly. My guess about why there is such limited coverage is that the High School Association hasn't sanctioned it yet - but why should that matter to a group of journalists? It's the fastest growing sport in the state (nearly 2000 participants with a vibrant culture) and seems a legit story. Anyway - thanks again.

Not enough players | 9:09 a.m. May 18, 2009
Most high schools don't even have enough players for the sports the UHSAA does sponsor. So why would they sponsor another sport.

They might also be the fastest growing sport currently, but there are a large number of soccer clubs in Utah that have more then 2000 kids.

So just because you are the fastest growing percent wise doesn't mean you are very big yet. I do expect you to become big enough soon just not yet.

The only way more sports will be allowed to work it to take all the sports out of the high schools. This way even if each school does not have enough kids for the sport it will not matter. Each sport will have how ever many teams they need for how many kids they have.

But since that would mean sports out of the high schools I completely against it.

Keep the sports we have, because it is very important for many kids to have something besides class to keep them in school.

Out side sports are just making bad students get away with being bad students (even though most players on outside teams are good students).

Great sport and to think we have 2 first team All-Americans in Davis County! Awesome!

Responding to Not Enough Players:
I'm actually not arguing for the UHSAA to sanction lacrosse. You may want to actually read the missive before you write. My comment was about coverage of the sport. I don't think it requires a sanction for a group of independent journalists to deem it newsworthy.

I agree that all sports (youth sports) need as much positive attention as possible, as do all other positive activities. That is the best way to keep kids involved and out of trouble.

I also don't care what sport they play or activty they are involved as long as they are doing something positive and staying out of trouple.

I think it's better that lacrosse is not sanctioned. Just like other similar sports, lacrosse athletes have freedom to travel and do more of the things the UHSAA is not able to allow due to legal restrictions. My son played lax and I thought it was much easier. Every sport costs money these days so I liked the way their lax team was able to have more freedom. I appreciate the hard work of the UHSAA, but I also think this is a good thing the way it is.
