Hail To The Chief!!

Gary Herbert should be an excellent governor unless he becomes polluted by the position. Politics is a nasty business in America. Who would want to be subjected to that nonsense? As a general rule, politicians are in office for power and/or money and do whatever it takes to be re-elected. Too bad!
Nancy Fidler | 10:09 a.m. May 16, 2009
Lots of comments are congratulating Huntsman for his move, but all seem to ignore one aspect of this. He campaigned and won a four year term as our governor. I feel that is a commitment he should honor rather than ditch it and run at the first offer of something else. Let's hope Herbert will have more integrity as governor.

This was a way for Obama to kill Huntsman's rising star.
Kudos to Obama and Huntsman | 10:20 a.m. May 16, 2009
I'm impressed that Obama would nominate someone so closely associated with his rival. This puts him in stark contrast with Gov. Palin of Alaska, who, despite the requests of Alaska Democrats, wouldn't nominate Beth Kerttula to fill a vacancy in the state senate. Kerttula and Palin had worked well in the past, but during the presidential campaign, Kerttula had questioned Palin's qualifications to be vice president. Now she's on Palin's bad list. Glad to hear Obama doesn't operate that way.

Best wishes to Gov. Huntsman as he repesents US interests in China.
GOP stinks | 10:25 a.m. May 16, 2009
Let us not forget that great representative of the USA -Ambassador John Price. The guy who failed to show up at the inauguration of the new president of Mauritius and whose wife was so bored while she was their she spent her time sunbathing on the beach and reading all the while thinking what a drag it was to have body guards follow her around. Price got that position by buying it for $700,000 he helped raise for the GOP in Utah to elect the Shrub. Oh yes, lets not forget, "intentionally deceptive" of cheating business partners out of money owed to them.
Gov Huntsman is very bright, very capable and good for him and his family. Remember, the guy has the right to say no to the President but he didn't and he will continue to serve his country. Herbert is a dull man. We will all miss Gov H, he is very bright, very well spoken and realized the governed the State of Utah and did not always have to agree with the dopes in the GOP Legis.
A much better public servant than Price.

As a short person I am personally offended that you would take a cheap shot (short joke) at two of the best little guys I know
I'm afraid with Herbert | 10:39 a.m. May 16, 2009
we will be the Mississipi of the western US when it comes to educations. Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but Herbert seems to me to be like most of the current GOP state legislature (anti education, pro roads, and pro self serving special interests). Hopefully Jim Matheson will run for govenor as I hate to tell the fringe right wingers, must people in the state don't hold your money grubbing self serving views all in the name of freedom, the founding fathers would be sick over your selfishness and greed.
Sparsile | 10:41 a.m. May 16, 2009
Obama wanted to make it hard for Huntsman to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012 (or even be a participant in the 2012 election discussion). Plus, it makes Obama look like he's trying to "reach across the aisle". On the positive side, Huntsman will be a good ambassador to China, which is rapidly emerging as the leading economic and military adversary to the United States.
Hooray! | 10:42 a.m. May 16, 2009
John, we never knew ya! Wait, we did, but that was AFTER you pretended to be a conservative, then outed yourself as a progresive in your last term. This is a good fit.
Another | 11:00 a.m. May 16, 2009
step back for Utah. Self serving legislator in SLC has got to be smiling as they now have a good ole boy in their pocket (Herbert). I know, how bout another tax cut for rich cuz everyone knows they need it the most.
A-Chinese_American | 11:24 a.m. May 16, 2009
Even I dislike John's political views, I really hope he would do something good for American people and understand Chinese people more...
Wilkey | 11:25 a.m. May 16, 2009
Huntsman: Never a Republican, always a RINO. His dad has given hundreds of thousands in contributions to Democrats. This "brave" man waited until after his last re-election to push civil unions; waited until after his re-election to reverse himself on state immigration enforcement.

Bravery is when you act on your cnvctions though it might cost you something. Huntsman, it's now obvious, wasn't risking anything. Wonder if all that supposed courage was about securing the China appointment? Huntsman was never going to be the Republican nominee for president. If a largely self-made man like Mitt Romney couldn't do it, Huntsman certainly could not.

Good riddance.

Gary Herbert will represent more fully the values of Utah!

Values are personal not collective. Oops. Sorry. There is a beehive on the state flag.
Good for Huntsman | 11:29 a.m. May 16, 2009
Good for Huntsman!

I hope Herbert represents all constituents not just his wacko base of rednecks.
True Perspective on the Facts | 11:31 a.m. May 16, 2009
One post here which was critical of President Obama and Huntsman suggested China was not crucial to the wellbeing of the United States and the world, and that to respect China's influence was to see the U.S. as occupying a "pathetic" status in relationship to a "third world" country. Fact is, China holds more than $350 billion of our debt, second only to Japan among the foreign countries we are indebted to. And to those who inisist on believing that President Obama extinguished Huntsman as a rising star, again, I say get a grip. Who are U.S. voters likely to be more enamored of? A man who was Utah governor and a voice of reason in a compromised political party? Or a man who was Utah governor, a voice of reason in a compromised poliitical party -- and ambassador to China at a time when such an amabassadorship was crucial? I'd say his star is rising in intensity.
Jeanne | 11:36 a.m. May 16, 2009
Good riddance! May be he will run against Obama as a democratic candidate during the next presidential elections, because, as many understand, this is where his heart truly is!
interesting | 11:43 a.m. May 16, 2009
I consider myself a conservative and I liked Huntsman. I think Republicans need to realize that social issues can't be the top of the party platform. Issues like abortion, gay marriage, global warming, etc. need to drop in priority and given back to the states. States have the constitutional right to address their own social issues. Mandates from the Federal government is against the consitution.

The GOP needs to be about financial conservatism and national defense. This is the only was to win an election. Avoid all those other issues. I think Huntsman understands this part. I just wish he would have taken a better approach to the global warming issue. Instead of letting people like Al Gore frame this issue, there needs to be a more pragmatic approach to conservation. What the US needs to do is get countries like India and China to raise their environment standards. Instead we let Al Gore and the liberals make the US sacrifice their economic progress by pushing manufacturing to 3rd world countries to avoid pollution standards.
Rick | 11:47 a.m. May 16, 2009
Huntsman is an excellent choice for this most critical position. American interests will be well served with him as ambassador to the second most powerful country in the world. He will be a rock star there because of his language capabilities. This will bode well for average Chinese citizen's opinions of America and help to further transform China into a more progressive and democratic country.

Sorry to have to tell the conspiracy theorists the truth and get them worked up into a further lather on this. Neither Huntsman, Romney, Hillary nor anyone else, will beat Obama in 2012. This appointment shows what a great job he is and will continue to do as POTUS. Obama has again shown the wisdom and maturity to pick a rival politician for a critical job in his administration, because he has been assembling the best qualified team to help our country out of the mess we are in.

God bless my President! God has blessed America by raising up this uniquely qualified man out of obscurity, to lead us in this critical time in United States and world history!

"Values are personal not collective." - Bender Rodriguez

Which values would those be? Values like "non-discrimination"? Values like "equal pay for equal work"? Values like collective education (unless you're a rich liberal like Obama sending his kids to private school)?

Liberals love collectivizing and legislating values, just like they love collectivizing the fruits of our labor.
jann | 11:51 a.m. May 16, 2009
to bad i cant send the govenor of the state that i live in to be an ambassador to a country. our govenor is not that good. oh well, what should i expect; i voted against the govenor that we now. i thought huntsmans only priority a few months ago was the state of utah. i think it is cool that he knows chinese and etc. but his priorities seemed to have changed all of the sudden.
Mike in Layton | 11:51 a.m. May 16, 2009
I appreciate all that Governor Huntsman has done for our state, with his courage and willingness to challenge the entrenched reactionary Republican mindset that we've put up with for so long. I wish him the best in his new efforts and am going to miss his leadership here. Let's hope Herbert enjoys a very brief career as governor.
NeoUtahn | 11:56 a.m. May 16, 2009
This is great news for Utah. After the election when Mr Huntsman revealed his Anti-Utah convictions many of us were feeling betrayed. Now he will be serving a country that has policies more in line with what he had in mind for Utah. He is an opportunist to the bone and may run for President in the New Far Left
Republican Party as a great friend and supporter of Communist ideas. Best of luck to you with your comrades in arms. Hey maybe he can join the Chinese in blaming Utah for Global Warming...That is if he can breath spending so much time in China. Its not fog dummies.
Keep'em close | 12:16 p.m. May 16, 2009
This is a brilliant political move on Obama's part. Not to downgrade Huntsman's great potential in this post, but Obama just made it easier for himself to stay a second term. He just neutralized a potentially fierce opponent. I think Obama scores big on this move!
Spence | 12:17 p.m. May 16, 2009
Well, here is one way to get rid of a Republican and force an election that might bring in a Democratic Governor to Utah! Am I the only one that see's that possibility.....?????
Best Wishes | 12:29 p.m. May 16, 2009
Goodbye. Good luck. Good riddance.

One less socialist in the state (a self-serving politician even)? That's a good thing!

So long and don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Adios to you and the horse you rode in on.
UTWoodsman | 12:31 p.m. May 16, 2009
Thank you Mr. President! This can't help Jonnys chances in 2012. He's not going to have the bully pulpit over in Beijing he's had here lately, which is a good thing.

I'm a little worried about someone with his ideology in such a key position, responsible for intergovernmental relations with our biggest trading partner, and holder of most of our federal debt.

Friends and some political leaders tell me not to worry about the Chinese. They could trash the US dollar in a heartbeat by merely hinting they might divest themselves of some of the trillions of US-denominated notes. I'm told, "Don't worry, they wouldn't do that...who would then buy their goods?" But that assumes that they think like capitalists and free-marketeers. Id like to believe that, but my gut tells me they're still totalitarian dictators, eager to acquire more land and people to control. They couldn't bring us to our knees militarily, but we're gleefully handing them the tools to do so in the financial markets.

So...I worry. I don't trust the Chinese, and I don't trust Huntsman. Scary!
ER | 12:43 p.m. May 16, 2009
I finished 2 years at the Embassy in Beijing and in the Beijing Branch in 2007. I think it would be fun to work for an Ambo that you go to church with. Interesting. Mormons make up a vastly higher percentage at the Embassy than they do of the US population. Our language abilitiy (Taiwan, TaiChung Mission 1986-87 myself) and associated Asia experience are probably mostly the reasons (among others) and I think that of course this is true yet again for Gov. (soon to be Amb.) Huntsman.
ER | 12:49 p.m. May 16, 2009
Oh, and kudos for Obama for seeing passed party lines and seeing the best candidate for the job. Gov. Huntsman would do well to listen and learn from Ambo Randt, our country's current longest serving Ambassador. I know Gov. Huntsman has done this before, but Ambo Randt really knows the job in China.

I'm glad Huntsman is leaving Utah. I was never impressed with him at all. While attending the Governor's Honors Academy at SUU he came and spoke to us, and nothing he said was worth listening to. Not only did he waste our time with a stupid speech, but he was about 30 minutes late and showed up in jeans and a button up shirt. We were all in our business professional dress. You would think that for the top 50 high school kids in the state at the GOVERNOR'S Honors Academy he would at least be on time and dress professionally. He lost any respect I may have had for him by his show he put on that day. All he wants is to be in the camera and have his face all over TV.

Another political opponent neutralized. He was a good guv'nah.

"To those who say that Huntsman is a "liberal," I suppose you are the ones who also say that Orrin Hatch is a liberal. You would probably say that Genghis Khan was a liberal if he were in office."

Genghis Khan was incredibly liberal for his time. (sorry to go off-topic but I feel the need to defend Genghis whenever anyone hates.)

But the main point is this is a great loss for Utah. Now we travel back to being a fringe state.
Obama | 1:12 p.m. May 16, 2009
President Obama picks a qualified candidate for the post of Amb. to Chine. Bipartisan.

Nice. No wonder I voted for Obama.
Thank goodness | 1:22 p.m. May 16, 2009
Now Utah will finally get a conservative governor for the first time in recent memory.
True Perspective on Facts | 1:33 p.m. May 16, 2009
I was in error in my earlier post, but my point as to China's crucial economic position in the world is strengthened by 2009 figures showing it holds about $1 trillion of our debt. It has risen to that from about $350 billion in 2007. The figures speak to the significance of being ambassador to such an influential country. If one has higher political ambitions, I would think this is a resume builder, not a star-buster.
Wow! | 1:35 p.m. May 16, 2009
One liberal picks another. No big suprise here folks. They both believe in the new religion of global warming, or in other words, global power grab by the global socialists. Good luck and good riddence gov. Huntsman.

"Liberals love collectivizing and legislating values, just like they love collectivizing the fruits of our labor."

This liberal single person has the federal government steal money from me in taxes because I pay a full share with no dependent deductions and I pay to educate kids who aren't mine.

I bet this guy isn't bother taking my cash but he a victim. This is why I hate conservatives. They also whine about being victims. I'm glad to help others through my taxes.

Wow!! I think this is so awesome! Congrats Gov. Huntsman! You are the perfect choice for this job!

Just as well. Jon-boy's been a closet democrat for some time, now. BO just put him into the closet and shut the door.

The fill in gov. Herbert had better pay attention to what is being said; the majority of Utah's population want something different than what huntsman had to offer. Listen to the people on illegal alien deportations or the majority of utahns will turn against you.

This is terrible for Utah as a state. Huntsman had the ear of businessman and policy-makers, both in this country and worldwide. Herbert is a small-town pol by comparison that will fight with all of the other small Republican state governors for facetime...

They both believe in the new religion of global warming, or in other words, global power grab by the global socialists.

Sorry to bust your bubble but if you collect SS or Medicaid then you too are a socialist, if not I apologize.

Einstein, even critics of "global warming" agree that that Earth is heating up, they only differ in what is the cause: "Natural" or "Man Made" ... it seems you think we're in an ice age.

Huntsman doesn't need Utah | 2:41 p.m. May 16, 2009
... for his star to rise. He's done all he could for Utah. Time to move on.
So Typical | 2:43 p.m. May 16, 2009
All you halfwits who have nothing good to say about Obama are now cheering his selection of Huntsman. Thats about the same as jumping on the bandwagon and cheering BYU when they win but critizing when they lose. You RINO's have no principals.

When I read this Headline Last Night, I thought someone sicker then me was joking around.

However why Not. He can call it his Senior Mission and the People of Utah can elect a Mormon to Office.

Get State Laws Against Abortion Passed, Repeal Liquor by the Drink, Quit Kissing Gay Activists. Enforce Illegal Alien Laws. Etc.

As a matter of fact this is a Good Idea.
A man true to his word | 2:54 p.m. May 16, 2009
Jon Jon ran on the expectation that he would serve out his second term. He also said he would never "just let a bill become law" without either signing or vetoing, and forcing an over ride.

Should fit in well with the Obamaites.
Pedro | 3:02 p.m. May 16, 2009
Wilkey at 11:25 wrote "Huntsman: Never a Republican, always a RINO."

This illustrates exactly what is wrong with the republican party. Following Rush's lead, republicans want to exclude anybody and everybody who isn't enough of an extremist.

Republican numbers are dwindling, and yet you want to exclude even more moderates? Good luck with that.

I'm not a Democrat, but I will never belong to the Republican party as long as there's no room for moderates. Extremists on both sides scare me.
Dem. | 3:03 p.m. May 16, 2009
This is not the best news I've heard for Utah he was making great strides in Utah to bring it to "normalcy"within America with is support with civil unions, liberalizing the unusual liquor laws that are in place here, and his support for cap and trade. Hopefully Herbert doesn't move us in the opposite direction
What.... | 3:09 p.m. May 16, 2009
an excellent way to build up a top credential resume especially when it comes to foreign policy experience. What is next? Maybe a National Political office when the opportunity presents itself?
