After James T. Kirk but before James T. Kirk 2.0 the audience was exposed to Kevin Costner who portrayed an Iowa corner farmer in THE FIELD OF DREAMS (1989) and would later play a postman in THE POSTMAN (1997). Perhaps it was his age, born in 1955 that relegated him into irrelevancy by the younger generation, but in some ways he led the way to today's ordinary, imperfect male who forges ahead nevertheless with both rebellion and common sense. So after William Shanter but before Chris Pine there was Kevin Costner.

I'm a die-hard-trekkie, so that makes me a little more critical than most, but I can't say that this was a great Star Trek movie. Lot's of action, to be sure, but a corny story line, far too many "ah ha" moments that come at precisely the right moment, and lots of inaccuracies about Star Trek technology (how could Scottie beam them back on to the Enterprise after the ship's been at warp for an hour?!). This most current attempt at what has been a great movie franchise is the least true to form. If you like movies like Star Wars that don't require you to think for more than two seconds in a row, this is the right movie for you!
