Utah Ute 1

Well done Hill. What the program needs is a long term committment from a coach that can become a stable success for our program like Majerus was, where he wants to create a legacy and stay with the program for his career. Develop loyalty to players, loyalty from the community to him, and loyalty from him to the community.

Wow

Wow. Taxpayers money and sponsor dollars. What a waste in tough times. Obviously, coaches don't have to tighten their belts like the rest of us. I'd rather have the money put to education rather than babysitting spoiled basketball NBA wannabees.

I only say this....

Just win more, baby!!!!

After a 5-12 start

next year, everybody will be rethinking this deal. He hasn't shown anything and hill throws all this money at him.

It is likely that next year will be a down year with a bunch of young players and low talent elder classmen. I don't think there is any way they will start 5-12 but a near .500 start seems likely along with such a finish. We will get a better judge of him the following two years.

i just wonder what the rest of the athletic department thinks of this when the school is trying to cut cost where it can???

investment

Paying big bucks to coaches is an investment. If they are successful, they can more than make up the money for their schools. Think name recognition, alumni donations, merchandise, etc. That's why states (and churches) pay coaches a lot of money.

Hero of Canton

This is good news, Coach Boylen is a great coach and is well on his way to re-establishing Utah Basketball as the best basketball program in the state.

Thank you Dr. Hill, between this and Coach Whit's extension we can have continued success in the programs.

Supply and Demand, baby.
People want Boylen. Keep him here.
You cut what you can and keep what you must. W/o things that make a program profitable (good coaches being a biggie), you can never hope to weather the storms.

$$

Its only a waste because Utah can't fill the Huntsman Center.

If this was football, another story.

Or maybe the Sugar Bowl money is going to the bball coach.

They never payed Majerus that money, I really doubt he will be able to do what Rick did. No one could.

Those that whine about Boylen's contract better start with about 1,000 (heck maybe 10,000) sports and entertainment contracts that pay more to people that have done less.

The Utah tax-payers are footing the bill for a very small part of Boylen's contract (same goes for Whittingham) most of the funds comes from the money generated from the Athletic Department via ticket sales, boosters, advertisers, etc. That is the way the system works and the UofU is NOT paying Jim Boylen something that is out of range with "the going rate" for a successful College Basketball Coach.

If you can get 10,000+ people to show up and watch you work I bet your pay would rise too.

Way to go coach!

Wow, how much money will Boylen share with Beeker? Neville's the only reason the UofU has done anything, and that was only good for one year (last year). Guess, one good year with the Utes goes a long way.

That Boylen character is the smartest person in Salt Lake. If the rest of us knew that replacing an icon like Majerus was just a matter of coaching one big Aussi, you or I would be leading the Ute program right now.

"They never payed [sic] Majerus that money..."

Thanks to a generous Huntsman donation, Majerus was being paid around $1M annually while coaching at the U when I was a student there back in the late-90s.

Wow my state tax increase (5% yeah right) is going to pay for this?

WOW!

Truly "In the Red"

Way to go Hill. Way to mortgage the future on the B-Ball and F-Ball programs. I guess that could be considered a calculated risk, but if either of these programs fail to produce championships, then that current $200-$300K deficit will certainly ballon. The result will then be outdated facilities with no revenue to improve them, the need to raise ticket prices in the face of diminishing fan support, and pressure from the State to cut budgets to a break-even level in an environment of increasing expenses.

I guess if it works and the U can produce annual championships, then your the hero. But if not and if they maintain their current performance of sporadic play (year to year) then you will certainly have a lot of answers to provide. Best of luck. It seems like a long shot and that Ute fans may very well remember this day.

re: ute fan

There are 3 places in the athletic department at the U where money should be spent, because money is being brought in. Football, Basketball and Gymnastics. You have to spend money to make money. Boylen showed promise last year getting the seniors to buy into his program. Lets hope the younger talent will do the same.

Budget cuts should be made in any place other than these three areas. Leave them alone, and spend what is needed to make them profitable.

If it wasn't for these 3 programs, there wouldn't be the other programs at a University.

boylen over?

all the ute fans on this board are saying we'll see if he's good in two years. Well, why is Hill signing him up for five more years right now?

I guess he liked what he saw against AZ in the tournament. That must have sealed the deal. LOL

re: Truly a Cougar Troll

Of course he is mortgaging the farm on Football and Basketball. Besides Gymnastics at the U, nothing else brings in money for the department.

You need to open your eyes. Football pays for all of the other programs that exist at most universities, that is why they spend money on coaches.

Sporadiac Play = 2 BCS trips and pay days in 4 seasons.

Just a jealous Cougar trying to mask his anger.

Itake Utedeuce

As a BYU fan I must say this is the best news in months. Please lock him in for years.

get real

Most of you BYU trolls have no idea of how coaches get paid. $200k is coming from the school and the rest is coming from coaches shows, camps, shoe deal etc etc.
For those that are crying about tax money and budget shortfalls the athletic department runs on the money it creates, no one is in your pocket. Time will tell if this is a good deal or not but I have seen consitant improvemnet in defence and wins since Jimmy B arrived.
