It would be very interesting to see how this same type of discrimination is being done at the University or any higher education level including loss of jobs. I believe this same type of discrimination will be evident with the recent cut backs of higher education jobs. Though the University cries out for diversity, the diverse seem to be the first to be laid off.
Great job and keep up the good work.
These students are inspirational and make us all at Mestizo feel that there's hope for a better world with them in it! I can't say enough about them. Great work! I love you all, including your incredible mentors Caitlin, Matt, and David.
No one should be treated less than respectfully, however, the lack of scholarship and job opportunities is the result of being undocumented. Those parents who have immigrated illegally have severely limited their children's choices. All actions have consequences. It is a pity that children, who have little or no control over their lifestyles, are suffering from the choices of adults -- parents, family, and political and business leaders.
While I applaud the efforts of this student think-tank, I do not understand how it can make a difference to those they are trying to help. Illegal -- "undocumented" -- status has natural consequences.
This article is right on target when it comes to prejudice and preconcieved ideas about groups of people; color and gender-wise are born of IGNORANCE! Personally, I know that I was kept out of Honors English in high school because I am female. Luckily, the university I attended after high school, put me in an excelerated English program. We are all PEOPLE and we want and need the same things. The same authority figures who keep kids out of excelerated courses, are the same people who will say "I knew he/she would amount to nothing!"
Prejudice is born of ignorance. We all want and need the same things. Both color AND gender issues are at hand. Your article sheds light on what is really happening out there! Especially, kids need to be accepted for who and what they are if they are to evolve into happy, productive adults.
