Good luck to all of the girls in the various state tournaments. I have been an avid male golfer for more than 4 decades. This is one of the best things I have seen happen to youth sports in our state.
Remember to have fun and enjoy the great experience of a state tournament.

Girls golf should be played in the Fall with boys golf. Not necessarily at the same courses on the same days but spring weather is so unpredictable...the girls have had to mange through a lot this spring and have done great. Just imagine if it was in the fall...

Playing it in the fall would conflict with volleyball. In the spring it conflicts with track but most girls should be able to do both if they want. It would be harder to play both in the fall.
re should be | 1:07 p.m. May 11, 2009
the busiest time for the school is the fall. that is why there are only a few sports bgoing during that time. the resources to maintain a strong football program alone is often overwhelming for schools. spring is the perfect time, and as the sport gets bigger so will the benefits of having it in spring.

Springtime was the worse time of the year for a teacher. Baseball, softball, boys tennis, boys soccer, boys' and girls' track, and girls' golf. I often wondered how students even learned during this time of the year. As a teacher, I felt I was teaching the same lesson at least 3 times because over 60% of my class were gone on any given day. Then include other educational activities and one finds learning time is less than minimal. I just shake my head and wonder. I am for sports as an important part of a young person's character building, but are we missing something here?
Demand? | 2:41 p.m. May 11, 2009
Is there enough demand for a Girl's Golf season? There must be or they wouldn't do it. There was one girl on my high school team in 1989, she lasted three weeks since she wasn't committed to it.
No, We are not. | 3:04 p.m. May 11, 2009
We are not missing anything. Sporting and other extra-curricular activities are part of a well-rounded education. I understand teachers concerns, but if you look at the majority of the kids that do extra-curricular activities you will find they are also some of the best students. Awesome to see girl's golf!
move it | 5:52 p.m. May 11, 2009
i think that they should move it the same time as boys golf. Half their meets have been canceled or rescheduled, there is such little interest that combine it with the boys, save the money for a coaches stipend and use it to pay for them to practice. Plus you would get a lot of the softball players to play in fall.

You did miss my point. My point being move girls golf to the fall where the number of sports is less and therefore minimizing the out of class time. The girls could play on the same day as boys only different courses and hopefully reducing expenses of travel. I agree with you about sports balancing out a young person's education. I have advocated that for over 30+ years. You are preaching to the choir on that issue. But you do throw the "balance" out of whack when you offer too much at one time.

I agree with move it! If softball and golf weren't at the same time I would definitely play golf as well. The golf program would get more players if they would move it to fall

Girls high school should be played in the Fall. If you want the girls to come out in force, and play better golf -- right after summer would be the best. Kids need to make a choice on what they really want to shine in-- I do not think you should think about other sports whan you set the best time for the kids. Move vollyball to spring and move golf to Fall. If your a avid soccer kid - your playing soccer all year long -- if you want to compete in golf, you better play all year long -- but the spring time in utah is the worst itme to play!! Go girls -- I hope the state will let you play in good weather in the future!!
