Typical Utah-esque response. I think the author is over-sensitive and he treats TV as a defender of values. Wrong. TV shows show us what we are. And we are people, and people swear. He calls writers lazy, but to me it seems like the author himself is lazy to explain to his kids that the F-words are just words and they have certain adult meanings in certain contexts. If you are afraid of what you might hear, watch Animal Planet. I honestly think that this overly-uptight behaviour is harmful to the American society. Learn from Europeans, really. You are, after all, their "grandgrandsons".

TV shows are not about showing "what we are". We don't need TV to see that. They are a distillation of what we choose to be or watch. Even reality shows are not reality. They are edited down for an agenda. If they truly showed reality, they would be so boring and slow that nobody would watch them and they would be out of business.

Now that does not mean that I see TV as a "defender of values". But it is definitely a portrayer of them. For good or ill, what they show is perceived as being endorsed by the producers of the show. And on a public forum, that endorsement needs to be kept in line with what the public as a whole is willing to allow. And I think you would be hard pressed to prove that this kind of parochial attitude is wholly unique to Utah.
