I'm glad to see that the Republicans have a plan. I wonder if it gets coverage on CBS, CNN, ABC and NBC.
I agree with Bishop 100 percent. As a nation we need to become self-sufficient in everything, including energy. There are plenty of current resources that we are not even using that we should be. As long as Americans continue to believe that the government should provide us with everything, the longer it is going to take us to get out of the recession. The only thing that will get this economy going again is to allow big business the ability to create more jobs without the government's interference. You put more citizens back to work in the private sector and don't tax them to pieces and the economy will take care of itself. Oil and energy companies can provide thousands of good paying jobs, if the government will let them create these jobs and not continue to tie their hands.
It's a "more than you can eat" plan. The oil industry hasn't drilled most of the leases they now hold.
The Republicans had 8 years and didn't do ANYTHING positive about energy. Rep. Bishop needs to wake up and realize that he is one of "Biff's" lackies. Unfortunately we don't have a time machine to go back and undo their MESS. Now we have to do it the old fashioned way, hard work and sacrifice.
Utah is already working on ways that could help with the diversity of energy created and used in Utah, and encouraging both saving energy and renewable energy. It is helpful when both sides of a debate can concentrate on items they agree.
We need clean energy, clean air, clean water, clean land and energy independence. We also need to encourage energy efficiency and technologies such as ground source heat pumps.
We may not agree with each other re: CO2 cap/trade, taxes, or our effects on climate.
We do need more renewable energy. Coal is reportedly being removed fast enough in Utah that it could last only 15 to 45 years for use in Utah at current rates.
We will need more electricity to offset a reduction in the use of foreign oil, and we can't afford to just rely on coal.
It has been pointed out that renewable energy will help the state's economy in places that coal, or gas won't. Renewable energy being added to the mix will increase the life of the Utah coal economy.
And what have the demcrats done the last 2 and 1/2 year since they took control of congress?
NOthing but talk a good game.
Really, what have the democrats actually ever done?
The idea that we will run out of coal in Utah in the next 15 to 45 years as utahenergyideas suggests is not based on real reserves, but on reserves of currently operating mines. Based on real reserves, Utah has more like 200 years of reserves and if we ran out, our close neighbor, Montana, which has about 23% of the total US reserves has about 3,618 years of reserves.(Source: Mine Safety and Health Administration)
But whatever happened to the concept of Wise Stewardship of God's earth?
Bishop speaks constantly of using resources, but it's always another variation of Utah's Environmental Motto: MULTIPLY, MULTIPLY AND PILLAGE THE EARTH!
