A good man. Hope he does well and can get this administration to help the native americans. Oh by the way the Obama administration just destroyed plans for an electrical power plant on Indian lands that would have created jobs and revenue for the them. Enviromental wackos win again!!!
He was great for Idaho and has proven himself a starter and a compassionate leader for the Indian community.
Bert, that is what we were trying to say all along. Larry was great for the State of Idaho. He just wasn't great for the Tribe in Idaho who had to wage a $4 Million dollar war to defend their own rights to conduct gaming.
native American tribes have the "right" to have casinos when the rest of Americans can't? I don't understand the reasoning. If it's such a great way to raise money, shouldn't the rest of us have that opportunity also?
My daughter in law taught school on one of the reservations and was horrified to see how many of her students' parents gambled their money away and couldn't even feed their kids. Gambling may make money for somebody, but not without a cost to those who get addicted to it. It's not "free" money--is costs people, some of them more than they can afford to pay. And the Native American people are not immune to the dangers either.
I should think we could find a better way to raise tribal funds and I hope Mr. Echohawk can find it.
Before anyone gets too impressed with McCain's opinion of Mr. Echohawk, remember that McCain picked Sarah Palin to be one heartbeat away from the presidency. I don't think McCain's judgments about people can be trusted.
Thanks in some degree to EchoHawk, the Indian gambling casinos in Idaho are very limited, and are nothing like Vegas type casinos. Because Idaho approved the lottery, Indians are allowed casinos with strict limitations.
EchoHawk is very conservative, and if he had switched parties, and become a Republican, he would have easily won the election for governor in Idaho.
You can measure the revenue that gaming provides. How do you measure the lives it destroys? What amount of revenue is set aside to help those it destroys? Is the gaming revenue being properly managed? How much is set aside for tribal education?
Hope Mr. Echohawk can bring some sense to this.
How much rent and food money is left at casinos? Lots of people are addicted to gambling. Having casinos for gambling addicts makes as much sence as selling cocaine to drug addicts.
Here's hoping professor Echohawk can work out a settlement that will end many years of Indian Trust mismanagement--and many years of litigation over the same.
I wish those senators would recognize the plight of native Hawaiians. Lack of education and jobs, cycles of poverty and violence, ice addiction, over representation of percentage in the penal institution, one of the highest rates of teenage pregnancy have all devastated our people. Our land was stolen by westerners. An apology issued only after a hundred years had passed. Lands ceded back to us by the federal government and crown lands now at the mercy of a governor who wishes to sell it off to reduce a deficit caused by years of careless budget mismanagement. A U.S. Supreme Court gutless in the protection of native peoples. Our ancestral lands, our aina, no longer ours. We congregate to barren wastelands like Las Vegas and crime infested slums in California. Shame on you people. No class. Shame on you.
I've become very much convinced that McCain is a religious bigot. He really hates anything coming from Utah or Mormondom. That probably explains why he got the lowest voter support in his home state of any candidate for the presidency in last year's presidential primaries. The fact that he is now opposing Echohawk on the flimsiest of pretenses underscores that point.
McCain, the Presidential campaign is over......LOL!!
McCain was the worst candidate for president the Republicans could have chosen because he just doesn't get it. The only Democrats I have ever voted for are the Matheson's (who are more conservative than most Republicans) and Obama. Unlike Ann Coulter, I was unwilling to pinch my nose and vote for McCain.
SP, he recused himself from anything to do with the Cobell lawsuit, that was in the hearing, so no luck there with what you had hoped for.
McCain is anti-indian gaming and should not be overseeing or involved in it's regulation. He is a hostile senator with a axe to grind. Indian Gaming has created a whole lot of good for the Indian People and he wants to shut down the opportunites for the many small and disadvantaged tribes from attaining Gaming also.
I met EchoHawk years ago while working in Idaho Juvenile Justice. I have the highest regard for his honesty, integrity, and ability. Native Americans are fortunate to have such a quality appointment. Only those with dishonorable intentions should be troubled. If only the rest of the President's appointments were this Wise. "J"
Natives should get a job and pay their own way, just like I have to. Coddling of the lazy has got to end.
