Is now the time to sell stock, pay off mortgage?

While I am all for paying down debt as quickly as possible, Ms. Smith didn't mention that once the money is used to pay off the mortgage, it's gone until the home is sold. If, heaven forbid, anything should happen to BJ's mother and she ended up in the hospital for an extended stay, there would be less financial resources to draw upon.

I would have also liked Ms. Smith to mention insurance. Nothing exotic or expensive - just having the proper insurance in place would ensure that one catastrophic event did not wipe out that $400K.

But, hey, kudos to BJ's father for amassing that much in assets in an era of hyper-consumerism. I think that's the true story here.
