Final cut BECK after he was used to help the free agents and rooks catch some balls. just another BYU QB trying to achieve the dream
BYU's QBs | 7:07 a.m. May 5, 2009
If Beck was the best that the Y has had to offer for years, and the offensive system seems to impair their QBs for the NFL, then why would a QB want to go and play for the Y if their eventual goal is to play in the NFL? Sure, they put up numbers, but when it all comes down to it, the NFL is the ultimate goal for most of these kids. If I had a son who was a QB looking at the Y and his dream was the NFL, I would encourage him to look elsewhere. Although, an LDS based education would be the only thing I would strongly encourage.

Yeah, Byu rarely puts QB's in the NFL and when they do they really struggle. Ask Jim Mcmahn, and Steve Young. I don't think Ty Detmer is complaining too much either. He didn't play much, but he sure made a heck of alot of money doing it and will be able to take care of his family. Oh yeah, and Steve Sarkasian who is now the head coach of a Pac-10 school. So yeah, your point is valid, sending your kid to be a QB at BYU is settiing them up for failure.

You're assuming that it's the system at BYU that causes them not to be ready for the NFL. That's ludicrous. Look at the great quarterbacks that BYU has had, especially in the last twenty years, and you will see a common denominator in all of them that didn't translate into the NFL: Undersized. That was Detmer's only downside, and even being very undersized, he still managed to stay employed at the highest level for 14 years!

Don't write Beck off so soon. He's been compared to Drew Brees and hasn't had a legit shot yet. Do you think those 4 games during the 2007 season where the Dolphins went 1-15 was a good barometer for him?

atleast he got drafted (unlike B. Johnson)! Alex smith has done so dang awesome in the NFL too! Number one pick can't even get through a season without getting injured,so the utes prepared him so well. and don't say the team had anything to do with it because there couldn't have been a tougher situation than the one beck was in for the last two years with the dolphins.

just needs a chance and he'll get that in Baltimore. He's a much better alternative than Troy Smith. I think the Ravens made a good move.
BYU v. uofu QBs | 2:14 p.m. May 5, 2009
Let's see BYU has had the likes of Marc Wilson, Gifford Nielsen, Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco, Ty Detmer, John Walsh, Steve Sarkisian, John Beck and Max Hall. These are just the ones I remembered while writing this note.
uofu has had Scott Mitchell, Alex Smith, Brett Ratliff and Brian Johnson.

It looks like BYU dominates in this category.

What, somebody at the DNews thought we didn't get enough of this exact same story yesterday so they put it in again today? I mean, I know there are slow news days but....

I guess that's the reply you have when the facts don't fit into your rose colored glasses oxygenless bubble up on the hill.

I think, though, you would have done yourself better by not hitting the "Add your comment" icon.
BYU, one of the best QB schools | 4:14 p.m. May 5, 2009
BYU has a great system for QBs to play at the next level. But success in the NFL largely depends on the QB. Playing in the NFL has more to do with athletic ability than what team you played for in college, but BYU puts as much on its quarterback to run a pro-style offense as any college in the nation.

So that's the one position at BYU that can make lofty claims, if anyone has claim to being a college with a pro-style quarterback position. Just ask the likes of one crazy Catholic, Jim McMahon, who only came to BYU for that reason. It prepared him for the pro game.

GO UTES!!!!

Paul Kruger & John Beck are now on the same NFL team.

Attention Utes Fans:; | 7:06 a.m. May 6, 2009
Especially the envious "Kitty Litter Fan". How many ute QB's have won a Super Bowl? Doesn't take long to add up that one. BYU QBs live the dream where utes can only dream a dream.

I don't believe I disputed your "facts" I was just making the point that your post was immature. The idea that either side has to post "facts" about who has the most qbs in the NFL, or who has the pretiest dollie is juvenile.

Beck was a good college quarterback. I hope he succeeds in the NFL.

But don't tell me your dollie is prettier. That is high school and is not what the article is about.

Some of you need to get a life. Beck is no longer at BYU just like Alex Smith is no longer at Utah. I hope they all do well and are able to provide for their families. I'll bet Beck and Kruger will be fine being on the same team.

You guys are talking about Former qb's who played 12 years ago or whatever. Who cares! about Steve Young or Jim Mcmahon. You guys are in love with the past and all it's "OLD GLORY". MAn imgaine if USC or OHIO ST fans sat around talking about all the ALL AMERICANS and former heisman winners, They would be talking for a month. Let it go BYU fans! Beck hasn't done anything inthe NFL, YOu asked my opinion I gave it to you.
