Obviously Pinegar was not a walk-on last season, he was on scholarship. He seems like a great guy who didn't get the support from the program after the injury to the shame of Rose and BYU.

Has this issue been on the Zone 1280 radio show in the morning? I'd like to hear what they have to say about it. And to hear Pinegar do an on air interview, without all the word twisting that goes on in print

Nice to hear from someone who has such insightful knowledge into the inner workings of the BYU B-ball program. And who also doesn't have an axe to grind and can be objective about the whole situation.

@SLCC Fan

I actually played college basketball so I do know a little about the game. I saw SLCC play a number of times and was just not that impressed with Magnusson. One of the games I saw he played 25-30 minutes and didn't score a point. My comment was that I didn't think he deserved so many minutes with not much production. Also it seems funny to me that you say SLCC had 6 D-1 caliber players but then you say BYU signed Magnusson mostly for his character. Becasue that's all I'm saying too.
Re: I don't see any problem | 5:51 p.m. May 5, 2009
Thank you for making my point. BYU is just like every other D-1 basketball program where winning comes first and all else second. There is no problem if that is your phylosophy. For BYU, that obvioulsy is the phylosophy. But even I have to say it's pretty cold to yank a guy's scholarship who was injured playing basketball. If you expect guys to go all out and risk their futures you should at least pay their tuition until they graduate. Also, to the guy saying the U doesn't have anyone good next year, I guess you missed the news about a Ute recruit dropping 40 in a national all-star game in Dallas. I know, nothing good ever happens outside of Utah County, but it's ok to look once in awhile.
Why? | 5:54 p.m. May 5, 2009
Why would BYU risk creating bad will by taking away a scholarship from one average player just to give it to a role player from a junior college. If they had a great player waiting in the wings it might have gone over a little better.

Thanks to you Mormophobes for taking another opportunity to bash the LDS Church. Ridiculous. Your biases obviously occupy far too many brain cells. A coach is expected to win games, even at BYU, so he must recruit and maintain the best players he can get. Naturally, being human, any coach will misjudge an athlete's talent and drive from time to time. But Rose has been excellent so far, so I trust that he is doing the right thing.
tough break from BYU to Matt | 6:07 p.m. May 5, 2009
what a low blow by Rose. Who ever heard of loyalty? Who ever heard of a comeback? Wow dump a scholar guy for maybe the 5th of 6th best player on a juco team. I have seen it all from BYU now.

@ Not Impact

I also played College basketball and I think we mostly agree but I think you make a mistake that alot people make when you look at a player like Magnusson. There is this great tendancy to evalute incomming talent on their offensive production alone with almost a total disregard for his role on his team and the other things he brings to the table.

I like to compare guys like Magnusson to the type of guy Shane Battier is for the Rockets. Battier rarely scores over 10 points for the Rockets but when he is healthy he plays as many minutes as Ming, TMac and Artest. Is there any doubt the little things he does and his defense are invaluable to that team?

Like Battier, Magnusson is a really good shooter (50%+fg, 46% 3pt, 80%FT) who just doesn't shoot much, he's a defensive stopper, and he always seems to step up when he is needed.

I'm not saying he is all world or that he will even play at all with BYU, but you can't underestimate the value of a good "Glue" guy, and for SLCC, Magnusson was that guy.
Seriously People | 8:35 p.m. May 5, 2009
It's a business plain and simple. People lose jobs. People lose scholarships. This is real life. Welcome aboard.

Oh, my bad, this isn't suppossed to be life in the BYU bubble. But, all the same people crying loyalty etc. are the same people that want BYU to win. Can't have both.

MAKE UP YOUR MIND.
Re. Greed Reponse | 8:37 p.m. May 5, 2009
You talk that "Greed" doesn't play into these decisions, well let me enlighten you some. Just what kind of money do you think going past 1 and out brings teams? Ten of thousands is all, so do you want myself and others to think that the almighty dollar doesn't come into to play in college sports in "the major sports" that is (football and basketball) to be precise? Open your eyes and see the world for what it really is- a rat race for the almighty buck. Thats all.
Facts | 11:20 p.m. May 5, 2009
Magnusson did not get Pinegar's scholarship. That is still available and will probably go to someone else that Rose is recruiting right now. And Pinegar was not a highly recruited player out of high school, and BYU is the program who gave him a chance by letting him walk-on last season, and then this season gave him the scholarship that would have been Trent Plaisted's. Pinegar was never, ever, promised a scholarship out of high school. Why should Rose keep a player around who everyone could see was not good enough to play for the Cougars? Why can't you all be like Pinegar himself, and understand that Rose did what he needed to do. Pinegar is not bitter, so why are so many of you faceless critics.
Bob | 11:31 p.m. May 5, 2009
To all of you out there debating the ethics of yanking Matt Pinegar's scholarship, and particularly those gleefully attacking BYU . . . . According to BYU Newsnet, October 17, 2007 Matt Pinegar was a walk-on, meaning he came to BYU WITHOUT A SCHOLARSHIP and was recruited mainly by USU, for whom his father played. I find no reference to any actual D-1 scholarship offers. He then redshirted as a freshman, but looked good enough that Coach Rose gave him the UNEXPECTED scholarship. He is now physically unable to play. There was no four-year promise. This was a kid who came without expectations, exceeded them, got the blessing of a scholarship for a year and now can't play anymore. It is sad, but hardly immoral or greedy to not give him two more years of free education for the one year of hard work on the scout team that got him the scholarship that was never promised him in the first place. Matt Pinegar isn't offended, why in the world are all of you!
RE: Bob | 12:01 a.m. May 6, 2009
Wow, did you really go back and look for articles to justify this??? It's interesting that you say "and now can't play anymore". That's the real problem here- he was hurt playing a sport for a college that was paying him. No different if you or I were hurt on our job, we would get workers comp or disability while this kid gets a "see you later". So yeah, people are debating the ethics of this all for good reason.
Possibly 2 extra scholarships? | 7:10 a.m. May 6, 2009
If JT doesn't come back we may have 2 unfilled scholarships. Hopefully we won't be forced to fill them with kids who down the road won't be considered good enough to keep them. Can we keep them in reserve and give more next recruiting season?
Re: RE: Bob @12:01 am | 9:09 a.m. May 6, 2009
Wow, you're deriding Bob for actually backing up his arguments with cited facts???

I agree that colleges should be able to provide scholarships to players who are injured, but the team should not be penalized for this. The blame for this lies in the NCAA and its overreaching rules.

Also, please remember that workers comp/disability is very different in nature. Extracurricular sports is not the same as a job. There are a lot of athletes who do not receive a scholarship at all for their time with their respective teams. Should they suddenly receive a scholarship if they get hurt?
Re: Bob | 9:36 a.m. May 6, 2009
The team would not be penalized if they still honored some sort of scholarship. It would not take away from any that they have. Pinegar was injured last August, meaning that NONE of us saw the potential this kid had and whether he warranted the scholarship after his redshirt year. He had been playing on an injury for 4 or 5 months prior to being benched. This whole season was only a fraction of what he could do. That injury is awful and very hard to play with. Meaning that the coaches and the trainers knew he was injured and still had him playing. So yeah, I do think that they should help the kid out. He will have a chronic injury the rest of his life, you mean to tell me that it's unethical for a school to pay a few thousand dollars every year to help out a kid who helped out the school?
Extracurricular Sports??? | 10:30 a.m. May 6, 2009
There is no way playing Div 1 athletics can be considered "extracurricular". These athletes are working for the college they represent and are making money for them as well. If it's true Pinegar was injured and continued to play with the coaches knowledge then that was wrong. Kudo's to the kid for walking away with dignity.

I'm having a hard time believing that Magnussen is the answer to our Woooooooees!!! Rose and his staff are trying to get some quality guys that they think they will beable to mold into contender nationally, but it's not going to happen as long as the players believe they are bigging than the team as a whole. At times they play together, but mostly what I see, are guys looking out for themselves and trying to get themselves attention. All it takes is one ofr two guys to believe this and the Whole team suffers from it. (Cummard and Tavernari) Good players, but not guys that can carry a team. We don't have that big guy down low that understands the game well enough to make good decisions and passes with the ball, or to make a good low post move without forcing crap up. I do like the additions of Haws and Davies, but the Howard kid and the Austin kid, are not BigTime Div I. Players

Go Cougs!

BYU has all the ego of teams like Florida without the atheletic accomplishment to back it up. They should really consider cutting all their atheletes, and atheletic programs, like they did at North BYU. They would save their school a lot of money, and their fans a lot of disappointment. Of course, BYU fans seem to get a sense of achievement from their mediocre teams, so maybe not.
adogg | 1:16 p.m. June 9, 2009
Yeah he got hurt really bad and wont be able to return anywhere ever. It is not repairable. It was a tough break for him, he and his wife were crushed. Dont blame Rose or the school, thats rediculous!
To adogg? | 9:43 a.m. Dec. 1, 2009
Wow really? You think a sports hernia is really bad and that he "wont be able to return anywhere ever"? Sports Hernias are very curable, i've had two of them and played an entire basketball season with one. Both healed after rest and rehab. This kid just didnt make the cut, don't blame it on something as minor as a sports hernia.
