That Utah still supports the death penalty I find troubling. Whether you follow the moral or financial argument, it's clear that abolishing the death penalty is the right thing to do. It just makes sense. What doesn't make sense is purposefully killing a defenseless person, at a tremendous cost to taxpayers.

Rule of law or rule of lawyers? Why does it cost millions to execute murderers? If there is an appeal, then skip to the Utah Supremes. Another appeal is then out of state hands. Unfortunately at least one of the U.S. Supremes thinks it is ok to reference foreign treaties that the U.S is not party to, effectively making a direct link to foreign law in spite of the U.S. Constitution's provision for the Executive to negotiate and the Senate to ratify any link between U.S. law and foreign law.

The bias of the Deseret News (and/or the reporter) against capital punishment is showing in the content of the article and the choice of a photo. Reporting should be more objective, especially on such controversial issues.

Why are we constantly told that life in prison is so much worse than execution? If it is true, then why do death row inmates spend so much time appealing their death sentences and trying to get them changed to life in prison? I'm just wondering if anyone has an answer to that question.

By vaulting the right of a murderer to live over the right of his victim(s) we tell him and society that he is a more valuable person than his victims were. What a great message.
