UVU

The entire first presidency attended? That is impressive. Way to Go UVU.

anom

Now go out and get a real degree from a real university

to anom

A real university? Really?....If you went to a "real university" or got any education it sure taught you how to waste your time trying to make yourself feel better by putting others down. Sorry.

RE: anom

Why such nastiness and disrespect? No doubt because you hold no degree from any university. A truly educated person would never sling such mud and muck in response to this article. I was in attendance at the commencement ceremonies (my daughter graduated from UVU in Spanish) and it was truly an impressive celebratory event. Matthew Holland was recognized as the newly appointed President of UVU, and President Monson gave the graduates a wonderful message of inspiration and encouragement. Holland and Monson, two scholars and noted community leaders, evidently disagree with your appraisal. Now anom, I challenge you to write back and inform everyone of the philosophical underpinnings of your grossly uninformed comment. And by the way, is your blog handle really "anon" and you just failed to spell it correctly? Maybe the result of you possessing a degree from a "real" university?

Anonymous

That's right--a real university. One where you learn that the abbreviation for anonymous is "anon," not "anom." LOL

I'm sorry, but why is the Pres. of the LDS church giving the commencement speech at a STATE school? What happened to diversity? Does everything have to revolve around the Mormons? No offense, I realize the school is trying to change its image after the Michael Moore fiasco, but Thomas Monson? Really?

oracle

Congratulations to the graduates. Education is a very wise investment.

to luvsjunotd

I see what you are saying when you ask if everything revolves around the Mormon Church. UVU is not a private institution and you are likely not the ony one who feels that way.

In the name of diversity, I personally don't think it would have been wise to give up the oppourtuniy to hear from a speaker of such quality. Whether a person is mormon or not, when that man speaks your heart and mind are elevated to a kinder way of thinking. He speaks truth in such a personal way. His messagesis exactly what those graduates needed to hear.

His message was to everyone, not just the LDS people in the crowd.

To: luvsjunotd

Often the leaders of the LDS Church are respected members of the community at large. As the article mentioned, President Monson had a long career in newspaper publishing. He has dedicated a large portion of his life to community organizations as well as to his church. Grow up. Pres. Monson is a member of the STATE and was born and raised here.

Bee Careful

Maybe they could have invited the Reverend Al Sharpton, or the Reverend Jesse Jackson to speak. I'll wager luvsjunotd wouldn't have had any problems with either of them as speaker. It's not that there is a problem with a prominent religious figure as commencement speaker for UVU, it's just that he's a MORMON! Bigotry rears its ugly head I fear.

Is UVU an LDS school?

Wonder?

Re: luvsjunotd...President Monson gave the commencement speech because he was invited to do so. If you have an issue with their choice...I suggest that you make your objection known to the University.

Re: Bee careful

What could anybody possibly gain from listening to sharpton or jackson? There is no reason to invite either of those guys to a university commencement. Unless it would be to teach the graduates to find a way to live off other peoples money for the rest of your life and contribute next to nothing to society.

Diversity recognizes everyone.

Some people feel that diversity means we recognize only people in the minority to the exclusion of the majority.

Nedd

This is almost shameful. Next year I am hoping we get the street preachers to the Y for there graduation. That should be fair.

luvsjunotd

What about Pastor France A. Davis? Isn't he a respected memeber of the community (and frankly has done a lot for Utah)? Why not invite him? That was simply my point.

Wow, if I were not LDS and a member of the graduating class I would have been pretty ticked. Sounds like UVSC has got the green cool-aid at the lunch table since the Michael Moore incident and obviously they brought in a rightious church man to lead the university. Kinda sad but thats just living in utah.

Why are there speeches? Shouldn't it be about the students?

There is always controversy about a speaker, people wearing ribbons in protest or standing with their back to them. Don't all these important people: presidents, senators, justices.... have better things to do? And then there is this who "honorary degree" thing. Celebrating people who actually earned a read degree and giving a visitor an honorary degree is like a slap in the face. Kind of insulting.

Anonymous

Having Monson speak was one thing, and controversial enough in its own right. But they also gave Monson an honorary Doctorate in Communication. Why?

Then they gave HIS WIFE an honorary doctorate in "Humane Letters"? What is THAT all about? Why would a State universities give an honorary doctorates to life-long homemaker?

[My questions are partly answered by considering all the rich Mormons on the Board of the University!]

When Monson got up to speak, he received a STANDING OVATION! But this was no spontaneous standing. Over on the West side of the auditorium, a member of Monson's entourage, stood up FIRST, then started waving their hands wildly, essentially ordering the students to stand up! It was so premeditated and contrived.

That's who you are Utah

your a state founded and ran by majority LDS. Get over it and eeal with it. Just accept who you are and stop conforming to outside negativity.
