Hot Rod was the best.
I am sure Dave Fredman has a lot of stories, as he goes back to New Orleans. I hope to hear some this summer.
This is a very very sad day for me and I am sure many of you. With the new guy coming in and we all know who that is, he has a legacy that better be appreciated by Mr. Locke.
We disagree on many things here such as Sloan and direction of the team. But on this we are united.
This has been a very difficult season. Very.
Rod learned a lot of his phrases "like yo yo dribble, leaping leaner" from the Great Chick Hearn.
That was Rod's first Broadcasting gig.
I would hear him in Phoenix on KTAR working with Mccoy, then in New Orleans at the Superdome.
Rod i remember the all star game on CBS when you interviewedn then CBS Executive Van Gordon Sauter trying to make small talk and joke and he said "lets get back to the game" he was so serious.
God's speed my friend.
There is nobody like Hot Rod Hundley, not anywhere. Unique beyond comparison. Flaws, sure, like us all, but even those stood out and said AHH. Hot Rod was your living room buddy for every Jazz game since the beginning. He is the lone carry over left from New Orleans. He's been here from day one. An era will end with Hundley's departure. Quickly run the hours. I remember listening to Rod as a 12 year old boy back in 1983. The Jazz got respectable at that time. Hot Rod has all of our respect. With Larry Miller's passing, the floodgates of change are turning chapters quickly. Perhaps it's the same meaty chapter. Right now, it seems like the final chapter. "Time makes you older, even children get older, and I am getting older to." Is jerry next? Oh how the years go by; Stockton, Malone, Miller, Hot Rod, and Sloan. Jerry remains for now. Hang tough Jerry, that is until we call for your head on the morrow.
I used to tape-record Jazz broadcasts off the radio and then listen to them on the nights the Jazz didn't play. This was 20 years ago, and my 13-year old self would drift off to sleep listening to Hot Rod-isms. It's remarkable how long he's been going. I for one will miss him.
A Gentle Push...
A Mild Arc...
...and the Ole' cowhide globe hits home!
I first heard Hot Rod Hundley as Chick Hearn's color man back in about 1967 or 1968. He definitely was an original. But, about half of the expressions that you used in the article were ones that I heard from Chick Hearn first. Regardless, he's certainly an institution and icon around the state of Utah.
Hot Rod put me to sleep many nights as a young boy, and then has done the same for my boys who would sneak their radio's on at night when the Jazz played late. You could tell if the Jazz were winning or losing just by the tone of Hot Rod's voice, and I would love to hear the disgust in his voice when they played poorly or made a dumb play. Thanks for the memories Hot Rod, you've been the best!
You will be missed!! Hot Rod is a classic.
hot rod is a great, he will be really missed! the jazz neeed to retire a mic or something for him he is the jazz voice he is the jazz! you gotta love it baby!!!
He will be greatly missed by all Jazz fans, and even some of the rest of you.
I remember many a game when there would be national coverage of a Jazz game and my Dad would turn on the radio and mute the TV just to hear Hot Rod call the game. Hot Rod, you hold a special place in the hearts of the true Jazz fans; as our memories reflect on times gone by, yours is the voice that still echoes in the recesses of our mind as we recall the Jazz highlights throughout the years. Thank you for being a constant for Jazz fans for so many years! You will be missed!
what a sad day, i read this article and start to feel a little teary eyes. Hot Rod has been the voice of the Jazz forever, and give so many great memories. Such as "Russel to in bound a half court, russell to stock, he's open, stock for three, he made it, he made it, he made it. We're on our way to the world championships in Chicago, Illinois." I can replay that whole thing in my mind over and over. The man had some of the best sayings and was just a testament to hard work. He was awesome to, because he wasn't just some commentator, he was the Utah jazz. He was just as dissapointed as any other fan out there when the jazz would lose. You know that he will be just as dissappoitned if they lose tonight. Let's hope the Jazz can win, and get Hot Rod back to Salt Lake for at least one more game.
Thanks for the many years Hot Rod, you were awesome and well worth listening too.
What a great announcer. When out of town and having to listen to the other teams announcer call the game it was painful. Their team could do no wrong and it was always the refs fault. Hot Rod gives credit to whoever makes a great play or points out when Jazz player makes a poor play. Yes, I'll miss muting the TV and listening to Hot Rod.
Rod's the BEST. One of a kind. Most folks don't know but he could really PLAY. NCAA College player of the year in 1957 at West Virginia and he could really score, handle and entertain!I hope the Jazz offer a DVD of some Jazz highlights as reported by Hot Rod thru the many years!
It'll be tough to replace his voice. His voice told the story of the game, from left to right of course. Not to mention that he was a true play by play man, those don't exist much anymore. It was always a pleasure to listen to the games since I was there, seeing the frozen rope from frontcourt left drop to win the game.
And those nicknames...Golden Griff (Dr. Dunkenstein), The Fastest of Them All, the Franchise, A.D., they went on and on.
Great tribute to one of the greatest radio callers ever!. Thanks for the the memories Hot Rod. We will miss you.
END OF AN ERA
John, Karl, Larry, now Rod, Jerry, Nissalke & Boone can't be far off. I love DWill (tho CP3 is better) & Millsap (tho Loozer SHOULD be better), and think Brewer has a chance to be dang good. The rest-meh.
Some good but soft guys, or else just hopeless. At least Harpring's tough, tho he's on life-support and his contract is ridiculous. Koufos may have a work ethic but he's years away.
Rod was the best, esp compared to the other teams' know-nothings, even if he'd had a pop or two. Will not be even close to the same without him, even if the Jazz get LeBron Jr with that Knicks pick.
Locke knows all the stats which is great, but every team has a guy like him now. No room for an original anymore.
Thank you, Mr Hundley. I met you once, and you were very courteous. God Bless, and the Jazz better give you and your family a big night next season.
Good player too. Drafted ahead of Wilt Chamberlain.. :)
I just heard on the radio that Locke will replace Hot Rod?? Dill Rod for Hot Rod what a deal! If Locke does the Jazz games I won't listen again until he's gone, he's horrible!
WHAT A SHOCK ENJOY EVERYONE! LEAGUE PASS FOR ME HOPE WITH AVERY OR ROMAR LEADING THE WAY MAN I GET EXCITED THINKING ABOUT THAT.,
Kobe said tonight he headed over to have his picture taken with Hot Rod and the picture is now hanging in his office.
Derek Fisher and the Laker players headed over to say goodbye to him tonight.
