Satan tends to shy away from Utah politics. He considers the process too mean and evil. ;)
Why should I be a Republican when it is the same as being a Democrat.
If that line is gone in Utah county, then it is truly gone for good.
Tyrants will be overthrown.
Liberty, not tyranny. Faith, not fear.
Welcome to the GOP - the party of FEAR, FEAR, FEAR.
To the GOP- it's exactly this type of rhetoric that Americans are sick of.
Stop already- do you really want to be the county laughing stock of America with your so called save-America-patriotism-fear this, fear that rhetoric.
You're driving more people away with such talk.
Mr Larsen where is you proof of the "hundreds of wealthy tax-exempt foundations controlled by the liberal super-rich elites" and if they really do exist I'm sure the same can be said there exists a "cabal" on the opposite side.
The resolution was very broad and generalizing, elementary in thought.
To the GOP if you want to be taken seriously you need intelligent answers to the problems we're facing, stop the blame game that it's all the liberals fault and come up with solutions of your own.
Kudos to Mr Joel Wright for seeing this for what it was.
I am a former Republican - and can no longer stand the party because it's platform is now about hate and fear.
If you really believe you're the party of less government stop with the silly, stupid resolutions for starters.
This reminds of the couple in footloose that wanted to ban the books and dancing because they were evil.
Take a look at your representation Utah County- that's what you're becoming.
That's scary!
Larsen's rant makes no sense. He just appears to harbor a lot of hatred to those who are different from himself. As a Christian, I find that offensive and hypocritical.
Yesterday there was a story about an LDS missionary, who is an illegal alien, being arrested. How does Larsen feel about all the illegal aliens who are members and serving missions? Do they hate America? Are they anti-Christian?
Fix the immigration policy and stop the hatred and bigotry.
Last time I looked you're not the Majority (yes- in Utah County, no worries there) if you want to expand your party you need to reach out to people that are -gasp- different from you. This resolution doesn't do that.
Paranoid and hypocritical, the irony!
There is a form of religious and intolerant government that is similar to what these people that back the resolution are called, the Taliban. They are just to myopic to see how close they resemble the Taliban in their language, thoughts and actions.
Utah County Taliban, for sure. Same thought process, different country and religion. Thankfully, we have the Constitution to protect us from these religious extremists.
Does this man have any influence in Utah County Politics? If he were my neighbor I would move faster than a blink of an eye! People that think like that under the guise of being Christian really astonish me.
Like run for the hills says- He is a mirror image of the Taliban! If all those that agree with his rants don't see it- you're just as narrow minded, bigoted, ignorant as he is. This man is scary!
I thought it was a joke, what century and country do we live in Mr Larsen- do people actually take him seriously? UTAH COUNTY WAKE UP and get enlightened- people from out of state will read this and think you're a crazy community- no joke!
The resolution did not pass!! He does not speak for the party. The delegates rejected it on a voice vote.
Just because one person expresses this view does not make it a majority view. The great thing is that he could express his view. He was treated courteously and with respect. It was debated and rejected.
The system works as long as the majority think things through and are not swayed by peer pressure. We are in trouble when we let the media do the thinking for us!!!
Yes, the system worked and the resolution was rejected, but I am a delegate and was totally embarrassed that it even got debated!
For anyone who thought the resolution had merit really needs to get out and experience a little more of the world. There are some really wonderful people and cultures outside of Utah County!
I am a delegate, as well, and although the resolution lost, I estimate it got at least 200 votes. (Someone asked for a count after the voice vote and those that voted one way or the other stood up in turns.) This is exactly why I ran to become a delegate--I thought the Republican elected officials were to the right of me, even though I considered myself a conservative! Here's the truth of the matter. Who shows up to the caucuses and runs to be delegates and precinct chairs? The extremists, that's who--and in far greater numbers than they have in the general population of the party. Normal people need to get involved.
You said it EXACTLY right BDawg. It kills me to see this extremism take over the party.
Looks like many voted for it and this will most certainly turn LEGAL immigrants against the Republican party. This resolution amounts to the same intolerance and racism that the Taliban uses to justify their actions.
The difference here? These people claim to be good Christians. I believe Jesus would be appalled by the language in this resolution.
I, too, am a delegate and was at the convention. I became a delegate be a moderate voice in the party and, to among other things, vote against these types of resolutions. Fortunately, enough delegates voted against it this time, but more moderates need to get involved and, this is important, get elected to be delegates at the caucuses.
Here's what's scary. As I listened to people around me talking about it afterwards, people voted against the exact language, not the intent, of that resolution. Look for a revised version in 2 years by someone. Many Republicans may say they are for legal immigration, but the connotation of their rhetoric often comes across as opposing all immigration.
Sadly, I think being a moderate Republican in Utah County is like being a wooly mammoth as the Ice Age ended. We are going extinct, and if we go extinct, I fear the Republican party will too.
