If you are not doing anything, it does not hurt when the economy goes south.

Resolution?

Conservative lawmakers actually passed a resolution criticizing President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress's $800-billion-plus stimulus-package spending bill? Hmmm, Yet not a word of the $750 billion plus the $450 billion packages that were passed by the Bush Administrations? Not a word about the huge budget deficts and the war spending that was outside of the budgets? WOW! What hipocrasy!

Oh Brother

After accepting federal stimilus money ...

"Still, Utah legislators were not opposed to biting the hand that fed them. Conservative lawmakers actually passed a resolution criticizing President Barack Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress's $800-billion-plus stimulus-package spending bill.

"

ahso

Cut short funding for medical care for poor and elderly, missing out on Federal matching funds.

Yet budgeted 25 million for the arts and 14 million to attract film and TV production.

Typical, "have you talked to your Bishop" is alive and well in Utah.

What crisis?

Thank God Utah is a conservative state, because it's these ideals that have put Utah in a good position.

As for the crisis? What crisis? I still have to drive back and forth at Wal Mart to find a parking spot.

And this "housing crisis." What a bunch of hype that is. The fact is, if your house drops in price, so does every other house. That means if you sell you four bedroom, two bath house, you can turn around the next day, and buy a four bedroom, two bath house. No wealth lost there, now is there?

If you wait five years for the price to go back up, well then all the other houses go up in price also. So when you sell your four bedroom, two bath house, you get the same result. After sell this house, you turn around and buy a four bedroom, two bath house. No wealth gained, no wealth lost.

The only way you lose is if you get upside down on your loan, or if you are selling the house and buying something else like cars, which would be dumb because cars devaluate so fast, unlike homes.

Maybe the Deseret News could tell us more about the few states that did not have a budget shortfall: Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and West Virginia. What did they do, or what do they have that we don't? Could or should we learn something from them?

Incredible

The more the legislature cuts, the more they slow the economy, yet they did not touch the rainy day fund or the money for education. They are the party of Hoover that did not learn from the depression Hoover caused nor from Bush's debacle.

Obama has turned stock market around that Bush sent into free fall and all Republicans do is criticize.

The party of NO has no new ideas, just the same failed policies that got us into this mess. When will Utah get change we can believe in?

To Incredible

I find your statement that Obama has turned the stock market around to be "incredible". I guess you can say that if you buy into the Socialist mantra that is being sold from "on high". Keep on drinking the kool-aid.

KM

I find it absolutly incredible that incredible wrote that the obama stock market has turned around?
What planet are you from? It hasn't turned around and all this out-of-control spending will only make it worse! econ 101

Turned the stock market around??? huh??? we own bank stock for retirement purposes, and have seen our dividend check go down to $1.34 a quarter, welfare suckers make more and have worked less...

we have worked hard, and saved. Done without all fancy frills...while the do nothings got their share of our hard work!!

You are from another planet, period. Stock market turn around my sweet bippie!!! The bankers have been allowed to run wild with no reprisals.

"Words just words"...pave the road to (I can't say the word on this site) heck!!!

One more step would have helped Utahns, and that would be to stop enabling illegal immigration. As long as we feel that it is Ok to bring in foreign labor in order to depress wages, Utah will remain a low wage state. Illegal labor brings in little in the form of taxes, but benefits the cheap labor employers. Illegal immigration also makes it difficult for low skilled students and others looking for part time or full time work. Illegal immigration is an over all drain on the economy.

Incredible needs to read "The Forgotten Man". Hoover did fail the country as did FDR. Both used too much government intervention and caused a depression that lasted well into the 1940's. Had the war not allowed private business to increase investment, FDR would have continued the depression past that as well. He had 8 years and did not end the depression.

Government intervention such as the stimuli packages passed by BOTH Bush and Obama will result in the same issues created by BOTH Hoover and FDR.

This is certainly a biased article. That bothers me. I expect better out of Utah.

Dropping By

The Utah legislature should be commended, but I'm surprised that it can't find its way to do more. The states are supposed to be laboratories of policy. Why not cut taxes deeper, or try a flat tax? Other states have eliminated the state income tax -- try that, Utah! Why not reduce corporate taxes? I fear that the same powerful special interests that absolutely reign elsewhere (leading to budget debacles like that in Calif.) are still much too powerful here, though obviously muted to a degree. Gov. Huntsman should LEAD and show the other states how to thrive even in bad times. Hint: it will never involve massive governmental intervention in the market.

Hey dropping by, we already have a flat tax of sorts. That flat tax helped the wealthy cut their taxes, but mine went up by over $500.00. Do away with state income tax? Nevada doesn't have a state income tax, because they have gambling revenue. Maybe we could open casinos here and eliminate state income tax. Lets certainly cut corporate taxes, because those poor fellows are not able to make a living now. I know, I know they are the ones that create all the jobs, that they have moved to India and China so that they can make an even more ridiculous amount of money by overworking and underpaying employees. I am all in favor of keeping government to a minimal level, but there are basic services that must be provided. Where do you think that money is going to come from if not from taxes?

RB

Washington State doesn't have a state income tax, nor does it have sales taxes on basic necessities like diapers, groceries, and medicines, etc.

License tabs for all motor vehicles is a flat $35 fee.

They also give corporations HUGE tax breaks to keep HUGE High paying companies like MicroSoft, Boeing, REI, Starbucks, Costco, etc. to employee their residets and keep those jobs in the US and for crossing the border into Canada or over seas to China.

Our legislators need to do a better job of promoting business and the people who actually work for them, their pay and spending is what creates the cash.
