Thanks to Jim Matheson for pushing this, and to President Obama for listening. This is a worthy stimulus project that means jobs right now and a safer environment in the future.

Democrat Pork

This is another example of democrat pork from Obama.

Sincerely,
J. McCain

Is 2028 correct? Even for our slow government, that seems like too long.

Anyway, finally some good news for those of us who get our drinking water from downstream.

I'm just thankful that this crap will not contaminate the Colorado River! 20 years is a long time for 1 Billion Dollars to keep dedicated for this one project without sticky fingers getting involved. Thank you. Have a nice day.

haboohunter

how do you call it a stimulus ??,,one cleanup job does not stimulate the economy

What a stupid waste of money. That stuff has been there for what, 50 years? And now it's going to save the planet by moving it somewhere else? Government, and especially Democrats, never cease to amaze me with their utter stupidity.

Ignorance

Nice comments Anonymous. Leave that junk there and then try telling the millions of people downstream that their water is not potable any longer...that'll certainly prove the waste of the money.

the location of the tailings as shown on the little map is not correct. The tailings are on the north side of the Colorado River, not as shown on the same side as the town of Moab

Obama Republican

Oh yes lets just leave the mess for the next generation! We were stuck with the mess by a bunch of greedy capitalist who raped the land. Now we finally have politician who will take responsibility for past mistakes!

wallofvoodoo

Yes, lets let greedy companies make money for overpaid CEO's at the expense of the environment. Thats capitalism for you.

Insider

I have inside knowledge of this situation so here's a bit of insight re: comments made previously.

When the DOD stopped some weapons programs, the uranium mine went belly up. DOE took over the land about 9 years ago. The biggest political proponent of the project has been Senator Bennett (R). The funding was authorized by the Bush 43 administration (R) after Samuel Bodman was confirmed Sec. of Energy. Yes, the Obama administration added $108 million of stimulus, and that will create additional jobs by adding shifts of workers to get work done faster.

The threat of down stream contamination is real and significant. A flood or earthquake could send the tailings into Lake Powell, Lake Mead and public water in Las Vegas and LA.

The process of drying and moving the product is slow, and is constrained by budgets as well as limits to the infrastructure in both throughput and transportation.

The destination site has some unique geologic properties that will contain the uranium for many generations.

Just wanted to sprinkle some facts on the discussion.
