Utah passes the fewest laws per year of any state. Most of those passed are NOT new laws. They merely tweek an existing law. So this article paints a false picture. While he's criticizing, Mr. Florez ought to look in the mirror.

Do you realize that getting rid of a law requires a bill (new law!). You know, this sounds so like the outsider's view of the legislature that the media creates, which is NOT correct. I believe that Utah has the least amount of laws and bloated government of any state - specifically because of the Republican legislature we have!

It still all depends on ones definition of 'public interest'.

To Chuck: I am afraid that most of the citizens of this state are like you. They expect far too little from their legislators. The citizens of this state seem to have no problem re-electing legislators who interfer with locally elected officials and their decisions (soccer stadium), appropriate 15 million dollars for a parking structure they will use as part-time legislators instead of spending 2 million dollars for preventive dental care which will save 30 million in Medicare funds, adopt rules which prohibit the average citizen's access to elected officials, a State Senator sending letters to a sitting judge publicly threatening him with removal for his ruling in a case involving the Senator's freind, or think it unnecessary to pass ethics reform legislation to make government more transparent. Those are only the most recent occurances, more could be sited.

This is not republican vs democrat or liberal vs conservative thing. We do not have the type of representation this state needs, but maybe we have what we deserve as we do not seem to want to hold our elected representitives responsible for what they do.

Bramble is right.

THis not a democracy,

This is a representive republic.

The founding fathers on every level of power designed this constitutional republic based on representation.

The founding fathers on numerous occasions have warned us about democracies and how it ALWAYS devolves into tyrannies.
