DD a Joke | 10:54 p.m. April 18, 2009
The duel thing is a joke. Baseball is worth 1.5 points. Girls volleyball is worth 3. Men's vb doesn't count because Utah doesn't spend schlorships on it. Even worse, girls soccer is worth 6 points. Track and field and cross country don't count either because once again Utah won't spend money on those sports.

Don't know who at the whatever credit union runs this thing, but we know 2 things they are soccer fans and they favor Utah because they allow Utah to spend more money on less sports and less students while BYU funds many more sports and gives many more kids chances. It is a huge advantage if Utah can spend tons of dollars recruiting one specific sport because they don't field other sports that would require schlorships.

BYU won last year, Utah will win this year.

Please no more next year unless you reduce points for soccer, add more points for baseball and softball and subtract points if a school does not field a varsity level sport when the other school does.

The results of this duel don't fit with the template of the narrative I usually propound.

Oh well.

GO UTES!!!!!!

Great win Cougs! Too bad the Deseret Duel has to cater to the teams that Utah can field, not the traditional teams that real University support. I guess anything we can do to help our little brother.

Not from the credit union that sponsors this Duel, but you my friend are extremely biased, as little of what you rant has any basis in fact. Are you a politician?

Not a big fan of the duel either. It was kind of forced on the fans. I know it's supposed to fuel the rivalry, but unless there is more than a trophy at stake then it will never catch on.
Hello, the Duel ? | 6:32 p.m. April 19, 2009
Publicity, Publicity, come on grow up people, the Credit Union needed to boost it's membership so they dreamed up this weak "Duel" idea thing. Oh well, hope it worked!

Mountain west conference history. BYU 139 Conference championships. Utah 10. NUFF SAID!!!

i thought BYU won the last two year's duels already. so is baseball counting towards the season to include last year's football game or the one coming up in November? i saw a picture on the desnews after BYU beat Utah in basketball at Provo where BYU was hoisting a Deseret Duel trophy. was that just for the single game or was it for the whole year and now we are starting the duel over?

the duel starts fall semester, I guess, and goes through summer terms. They have individual trophies for each sport, then the final trophy for the overall winner. You can tell the players couldn't care less...at that b-ball game the cougs hoisted the cheap glass thing, posed for a few photos, then forgot about the whole thing and went on their way. Utah's got the overall duel in the bag this year, while the cougs won it last year. After two years, it's time for both teams to get out of that publicity booster for Deseret First. It's stupid, makes the teams seem smaller than they really are, and doesn't fuel the rivalry in the least.

Too local in its flavor. The Utes are just another state supported college.

There have only been two annual deseret duel awards - however they also award a winner in each sport that is represented each year - it took about five years to negotiate because chris hill whined about how unfair it was to compare his utes to byu's spring sports, so they eventually cut out sports like golf, track and field, and discounted others - it is rather lame

Cougar Baseball is tops | 10:31 a.m. April 21, 2009
I think they should do a little better nationally, but in our little piece of the world, BYU baseball is the best in the intermountain west. No contest. Go job again Cougars.

a great girls gymnastics school. Not good for much else!
re: Utes | 2:23 p.m. April 21, 2009
That really just embarrasses your entire athletic program. Since the Utes owned you in the real sports this year.

Sugar Bowl Champs
Undefeated
MWC Football Champs
MWC Regular Season and Tournament Champs - Men's & Women's Basketball

But yeah, I heard you guys have a good baseball and track team! Maybe even men's volleyball! So sad.
Points | 3:16 p.m. April 21, 2009
Baseball is worth 1.5 points for each game, because they play like 6 games (total of 9 points)...Womens volleyball is worth 3 points and they play twice for a total of 6 points...Womens soccer only play 1 game for a total of 6 points...

See, so you have to look at it by total points possible...Football is worth 10 points, men and womens basketball is worth a total of 10 points each, baseball is worth 9, and there are a bunch of other sports worth less than that, such as volleyball, soccer, tennis, swimming...

If anything, it favors BYU, because they are usually better at the, for lack of a better word, "smaller" sports...Utah and BYU are generally pretty equal lately when it comes to football and basketball...

You forgot one of our accomplishments:

We've held on to our racist nickname one more year.

Go UTES!!!!!
Re: Deseret Fool | 9:43 a.m. April 23, 2009
byU gained 20 points off winning football and both men's bball games in the first DD season...and still only won 34-30. So point not well taken.

And no matter what the kitties do this year, there aren't 20 points remaining to make up the chasm in the scores this year.

But thanks for your insights, little brother.
Too bad | 9:45 a.m. April 23, 2009
there aren't points for ballroom dancing...you guys might take it every year.
