Clueless | 1:52 a.m. April 19, 2009
Regardless of how each "TEA PARTY" agenda was presented in each city, the message is loud and clear, the American people are fed up with big "GOVERNMENT" left, right or middle.....the people do not like what represents us in both State and Federal Government and they want those that are in office to be held accountable for their actions and choices at the expense of the taxpayers.

Anyone that thinks Obama will succeed is smoking some serious stuff, it won't succeed if you do the math.

I bet the British said the same thing about the colonists: that they would just "fade away"...

Sorry Stenar.

We are already planning another demonstration for this summer. It may not be called a "Tea Party" but we plan to build on this beginning.

Moderate middle American needs to stand up and take back the country from the LOONS who are currently running it.

Just to be clear, most of us didn't care for the LOONS who just left (Bush/Cheney). So don't take this as a Democrat vs. Republican stance.

Our main issue is and will likely remain ... out-of-control government spending.

Bush had a 1.2 Trillion dollar deficit. Obama has promptly doubled that.

American is headed for hyper-inflation and super high taxes even on those earning less than the proverbial $250,000.00 rich man's club.

Those in power, however, will choose to call them fees so they can look us straight in the eye and say, "We didn't raise your taxes. What you're paying is a (fill in the blank) fee."

"The problem with Socialism is eventually you run out of other people's money." - Margaret Thatcher
Silva | 4:04 a.m. April 19, 2009
meh, the time to protest was during the Bush administration when the problem could of been avoided.

Now it's to late.
To Silva | 8:33 a.m. April 19, 2009
The government is not in control of when and where a recession starts and ends. Even if the American people were to persuade Bush to reduce spending, we would still be in this economic crisis that we are in. Therefore, this crisis was coming whether we liked it or not, and reigning in Bush would not have stopped its progression to what we see today as a full-bloomed recession.
@ Silva | 8:38 a.m. April 19, 2009
It is painfully obvious that even IF the deficit created by Bush were only in the billions, or even millions, it is clear that the Democratic congress, with its fearless Democratic leader Barack Obama, would even still pass legislation towards "buoying" up the financial sector, and the financial sector, of course, is the blame-all for all of our financial woes. Any person with a even a slight cursory curiosity would realize that it was the fault of the Clinton administration in pressuring banks into providing sub-prime loans to poor credit folks;, in other words, it was the Clinton administration that provided the legal means for lenders to pursue predatory lending.
While some socialistic programs are beneficial (i.e. Medicaid, WIC, CHIP, Medicare,Public Education [in some states]), the appointment of Czars by President Obama is very disturbing, but not much more disturbing than the previous administration's actions, with the exception of the exponentially everlasting nation debt that the Obama administration has worsened.

Where were you all 8 years ago?

There was nothing bi-partison about this. It was anti-democrat, anti-Obama, and anti-liberal. Well you have forgotton the last 8 years.

Interested in the erosion of your rights, go read the Patriot act. Interested in spending and deficits, go find the national debt for each administration on the internet. Make special note of the slope of the graph for republican vs. democratic administrations. Conservatives decry 'tax and spend' democrats. Republicans spend and spend and spend - on credit.

Reagan decided deficits don't matter. Republicans have nothing to say about that. They vote on 4 issues: G@d, guns, gays and abortion.

You are reaping what you have sown.

Evenson is naive. The "tea parties" were whipped up by the orchestration of Faux News and the Limbotomy millionaires who are laughing all the way to the bank. These were not spontaneous "grass roots" demonstrations, unless you define demagoguery as spontaneity.
Jud | 11:13 a.m. April 19, 2009
Why no "tea parties" from the right wing to protest wasting trillions on wars that have achieved nothing? I like spending long-delayed $ on better health care, a better environment, and better education, which will build up instead of destroy.
Ultra Bob | 12:19 p.m. April 19, 2009
Judging from the signs that the protestors carried, I believe the protestors were mainly conservative types who follow the conservative anti-government propaganda. Another clue to the protestors character came from one of the news commentators when he remarked the protests were absolutely civil and had no violence, not even a parking ticket.

The reason that conservative protestors would protest spending is because of the Conservative Republican program to make the recession as deep as possible and last as long as possible. Recessions are a joy to the wealthy. Recessions are when there is a lack of consumer spending which creates low prices for goods and property.

It is good for the protestors to do what they do, it publishes their lie so that the most people can see it and take evasive action. And it makes people think. And when people think about the government and the services it provides them, they may realize that the good that the government gives us is a good deal compared to other products that we buy with our money.

Our hope is that it will be the thinking people who lead us into the future.

If you believe that Americans should be subjects of the Federal Government rather than citizens then Obama's policies should be wildly succesful. If you believe that American children should become wards of the State when born then his policies will be a smashing success. If believe that American energy companies should not be allowed to extract oil on American soil or waters then his policies are going to be another success.

Utah GOP co-opts T-party locally | 1:47 p.m. April 19, 2009
Attorney General Mark Shurtleff paid for the stage at the Federal building ("I paid for this microphone," said Ronald Reagan.)

Incumbent politicians Shurtleff, Bishop and Chafftez wanted to make sure that those involved in counter-statism elsewhere -- such as Ron Paul supporters and Libertarians -- did not get an opportunity to present their message in this space. So nothing but filibustering from the stage, courtesy of Utah's Right-Wing Noise Machine.

What have some Libertarians suggested as alternatives to Obamunnism and Bush/Rovian militarism?

The Libertarian Party's flyer for April 15th listed three points:

*Repeal the income tax

*Adopt the Balanced Budget Amendment

*Abolish corporate welfare and bailouts.

BTW, local Libertarians meet on the fourth Thursday of every month ... check their web site for details.

And a protest calling for the audit and/or dissolution of the Federal Reserve Bank is planned at its Salt Lake City office -- across from the Federal building -- for Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 2-4 p.m.

Proof that Fox News and a couple conservative groups can create an event based on hate conceited as political discourse. Most these people got a tax cut. Even after those over 200k get hit with a whopping two percent tax increase they will be paying ten percent less than they paid under Reagan.

These where whiner's club events. The same whiner that cries: "The government takes money from me to give to others," has our government taking money from this single liberal to pay for their kids education.

Where were these whiner when they though wars were entitlement programs that could be charged on credit?

Lets be conservative. Let cut child deductions. If you want kids, pay for having them! Let cut out mortgage write offs! Let the free market rule.

These whiners want roads, schools, police, fire departments, air traffic control and a military. They don't want tax equality. They want to have their cake and eat it too.

I don't think very many people in the Provo Tea Party hated people. What's wrong with lower simpler taxes, less government intrusion in business, free trade, etc. The subprime debacle was due to too much government intervention forcing banks to give out subprime loans. Also Greenspan kept the interest too low, too long. As soon as the Bush tax cut lapses look for the DOW to bottom out.

"less govt. intrution in business" (like Enron business, Wall Street business?)--I think a large part of the problem is somewhere along the line it was decided that "business" would police/correct itself. The majority of the sub-prime loans were NOT made by banks but by private mortgage brokers which were then packaged, rated AAA, making their way throughout our financial system. If the main problem were just sub-prime loans we wouldn't be talking about trillions to "fix" a national and world-wide economic disaster.
"I made a mistake in presuming that the self-interests of organizations, specifically banks and others, were such as that they were best capable of protecting their own shareholders and their equity," Greenspan, described as a maestro and an oracle while at the central bank, told a House committee. Greenspan called that "a flaw in the model ... that defines how the world works."

Talking heads | 5:32 p.m. April 19, 2009
I refuse to be dragged into the usual partisan wrangling.

I believe that this was largely a bi-partisan protest. That would have been more clear had reporters taken the time to question protestors more closely, and with respect, about their feelings.

Instead we got the usual "talking heads" telling us what happened. It seems to be "below their dignity" to actually ask a score or two of actual protestors a few polite, yet probing, questions, and come to a fair conclusion and summary.

The CNN reporter who scolded one protestor was at least honest, or perhaps just not very clever. She clearly showed her lack of objectivity from the start.

Those who love Obama are simply Bush haters. They know their man is an empty suit. The teleprompter tells him what to say and how to act. Without his script Obama's incompetence is on display. My question is who is writing Obama's script? The more important question is who is running the country? Obama is someone's puppet.

If these tea parties were non-partisan, then I'm the missing Jonas brother. If John McCain had been elected, these "protests" would have been practically non-existent. People can dress try to dress things up, but April 15th was just an excuse for most of these people to get out and vent their hatred of Obama while Fox News plugged and promoted it as if their life depended upon it. Face it, "teabaggers." You're being duped.

Thanks, Jay. You summed up exactly why I stood out in the freezing blizzard. It was a way to protest the insanity going on in Washington. Every day I wake up wondering what new intrusion and or debt the government will be inflicting on the taxpayers and citizens of this Country. I exercised my fifth amendment right to go express my frustration along with thousands of others across the nation. It has been sad to see the liberal media try to downplay and actually insult American citizens for letting their voices be heard. In fact, it's disheartening and a little frightening. Thanks for your accurate and fair report.

When someone posts their comments under the username Anonymous they are immediately suspect. I realize that there are millions of people in America who shockingly think socialism is the best thing since sliced bread. I promise it is not. The "teabaggers" are hard-working Americans, who, by the way have not enjoyed a tax cut but the raising of fees and other things which will continue to rise, who have had enough. We're mad at the Republicans for blowing the chance to behave in the conservative fashion they elected to behave in. We're mad at the Democrats for shoving socialism down our throats. We're mad at Obama for shoving aside the Constitution. We're mad about the astronomical rise in taxes coming to pay for the madness called the Recovery and Omnibus. We're mad about being told that we're too stupid to take care of ourselves.

And yes, there were those of us who made it clear to Bush the direction he was headed in had to stop. But he loved America. With every action, Obama proves his hatred of America & Constitution. As such we protest the destruction of America.
Voice of Reason | 8:40 a.m. April 20, 2009
ds,

Actually, the Congress has far more power over the budget and deficit spending than the president does, or basically proposes a budget then sits back & watches as the Congress turns it into what they actually want.

Look at deficit spending during Democrat vs. GOP -controlled legislatures, and you will see a very consistent pattern of Demos spending us into the ground...until the past four years or so, when Bush and the GOP-controlled Congress did spend wildly, a new development for GOP Congresses. That's more a function of one-party control of both the Congress and White House, which usually isn't a good thing.

Yes, with Bush-s cooperation the GOP-controlled Congress put us on the freight train of deficit spending.

The problem is, with Obama & the Demos in control, they're now putting us on the Starship Enterprise of deficit spending.

To "Ultra Bob | 12:19 p.m." you said that "I believe the protestors were mainly conservative types who follow the conservative anti-government propaganda." Since when are conservatives anti-government, those are typically anarcists. Conservatives are anti-BIG-government, which is totally different than anti-government.

Also, since you regularly support big government, what percentage of your paycheck are you willing to part with to have the government take care of you?

Another thing, if you look into the conservative movement, the reason for having the government get out of way is that they cause many of the problems that they propose to solve. Freddie's and Fannie's collaps were created by the government, and collapsed due to government intervention. Several of the recession over the past 100 years were caused by government involvement in the economy. The Federal reserve was created nearly 100 years ago to prevent future recessions. My point is that government has a poor track record when it comes to involvement in the economy.

Let me see, our illustrious gov just cost me more in state taxes and that is Obamas fault? Bush wanted to be a dictator and his group started tearing the constitution apart but that's Obamas fault also and who started the Corporate bailouts? Wasn't that also on Bushs watch but again it is Obamas fault as he has been in office 3 months now -- The wealthy want to continue earning monies on the backs of the little people and not pay their fare portion. Americans are selfish and sick and the tea bag issue is a joke a bunch of bags whining
RedShirt | 12:56 p.m. April 20, 2009
To "jr | 12:35 p.m." Obama continued Bush's spending spree by passing the nearly $800 billion bailout, followed by the $400 billion additional spending package. Bush was only able to spend $350 billion of the $700 billion he received. Obama and company have taken over the remaining $350, and instead of refusing to use it, are now using it to control the actions of the banks that recieved the money. That is why so much focus and blame is being given to Obama. The problem is that in 3 months Obama has wasted money in special spending bills at nearly 2 times the rate the Bush was.

Finally, what percent is "fair" for the rich to pay, seeing as how 40% of the US pays no income tax, and it is the wealthy that already pay most of the income tax?
Captain Kirk | 4:02 p.m. April 20, 2009
Utltra Bob ...
If you really think about it... the government is not giving us a good deal for our money.
They are just printing money and borrowing money to pay for their extremely inefficent way of bringing us services. Write a trillion dollars in bad checks and I'll show you the illusion of prosperity. For a while!
I guess since you are retired, you figure it will be somebody else's problem if we can just keep the ponzi scheme going for a few more decades.

If you really thought about it ... you'd realize that most people at these tea parties are not the wealthy elite who are, according to your theory, behind the recession.

Do you really study and think about what you write here? You sound like you are scared to live without the big government sugar daddy.
I don't want thinking people who "think" like you to lead us into the future.
That kind of thinking is what got us in this mess. Your idea is to just keep doing what we are doing and do MORE.
I want change I can believe in. Smaller Government. That would be a change.

Captain Kirk | 5:33 p.m. April 20, 2009
@ Duh "ds | 8:45 a.m."

I agree with your sentiments.

But I disagree that nobody knew these problems were coming.
Many people saw this coming. Many economists warned us. Many saw the Mortgage problem coming. Government just does not listen to those voices.
Just like Obama saying all economist agreed that we needed the spending bill. He is not listening to the real economists. Just the politcally correct ones.

This boom/bust cycle has been happening ever since government started pushing the free markets around with subsidies of many various kinds, reckless spending and criminal monetary policies.

I am a real "conservative". I was no fan of Bush.

Many of us spoke out against Bush and preceding presidents.

I'm tired of the two-party finger pointing. There is not a big difference bewteen the parties.
Seriously, Obama's foriegn policy is not different is substance , only tone. His fiscal policies are only different in that he is spending even more. He wanted to raise taxes but wisely didn't due to the recession. Nothing has changed. The march towards socialism continues on regardless of party.

Maybe that is what the people really want.

waking a sleeping giant | 8:23 a.m. April 21, 2009
Maybe the protests show the belated waking up of a sleeping giant.

I'm all for it. The protests outside of the Federal Reserve is a good one too and, as has been suggested, perhaps more direct.

The pollsters have demonstrated that people are cynical about our elected representatives, a well-deserved ignominy in many cases, most probably. The presidents and congresses have not upheld the Constitution of the United States of America.

Sack cloth and ashes accompanied by peaceful assemblies for the redress of grievances is the best we can do. It is certainly an improvement after years of careless apathy and delusion.
