DVD is very much alive. Blu ray not there yet.

DVD is so dead. It will linger another few years because everyone has a cheap DVD player. But don't be lured into thinking DVD has a life. All content will be delivered online. With fiber optics showing up in everyone's home (Verizon's new intiative) in the next five years, DVD's will be as antiquated as a floppy drive. It makes perfect sense. Hardware delivery is a thing of the past. Even on my comcast non-business account I am downloading at a sustained 2500kbs. I can stream anything at that data rate.

Just look at the REDBOX outside every local gas station and grocery store- DVD is alive and well. Plus Blue Ray is still on the upswing... They will be around at least another 10 years...

I'm a geezer, and I'm pleased with all of the old-time movies that are appearing on DVD. Thanks to my new Sony DVD player that upscales to 1080p and my new Sony digital TV, I'm getting a resolution close to Blue-Ray, and I won't be buying Blue-Ray for a long time, if ever.
