DIXIE DOWNS

Dixie Downs was the name of the race track in the area. The race track no longer exists. However, the area retained the name. The name does not honor the race track. The elementary was named for the area and is just off Dixie Downs Drive.

Is there a spanish translation for Dixie? Why not just name it Cesar Chavez, Benito Juarez, Tiajuana, Pancho Villa, or any other Spanish name that would let everyone know that it is a PC elementary.

How does everyone like the invasion of their Borders, language and Culture??? Anyone who cares better start calling, writing and getting in the face of your representatives.

peeved

and how much is THIS going to cost us?

Gimmie a break, why do they have to have a name changed to show they are a dual immersion school? I went to a "bilingual" school and classroom, I didn't learn a thing...oh, maybe because the name remained William Green elementary...maybe if they had changed the name to Guillermo Green I would've learned something? and are they looking for extra funding would the name change do that?

do I dare?

if they change the name, I think it will be even more worthy of being refered to as the 'Downs' school. at least those responsible for the name change should be associated with 'downs'.

Fire everyone, and close the school. Just from this article one can deduce that this school is already a failure, and waste of money! P.S. maybe if the illegals moved back to Mexico, they could change the name of their schools down there, but leave ours alone!

What's wrong with adding a little diversity to the school name? If more Americans would be more open and respectful to other cultures it would go along way in making the world a better place. I completely support the name change! Go Dixie Sol!

To BYU Fan,

How dare you lecture us about diversity and respect for other cultures. Who do you think you are? Your self righteous attitude makes me sick! Your nation has been invaded by foreign nationals without the consent of the people and you have the gall to lecture us about diversity and respect for other cultures. How about you getting some self-respect for your own culture instead of your anti-American uneducated answer to a major problem facing most of America. If this was only about a name change that would be one issue. However, this is not just about changing a schools name. Go educate yourself about what is going on all over this nation with regards to the illegal invasion of our nation. When you have done that come back and tell me how great it is to change the name of a school that educates illegals and bastard illegal citizens who suck off the taxpayers money because some outlaw business wants cheap slave labor and thinks the rest of us ought to pick up the cost. While your at it go find out how great diversity works out in California and other states. No Assimilation.

Hey peeved, I teach Spanish Immersion and I see that students who put forth effort and really want to learn a second language do. Most of the time it is lack of effort that causes you to not learn. That's my two-cents worth...

Next Year?

What about next years class that wants to rename the school after the most popular video game that all of the students play? Video games probably make up a bigger part of the "culture" in the elementary school than does Sol. If you do it for Latins, you would have to do it for everyone.

What happens when the PTA, students and faculty want something derogatory or politically incorrect?

What about the students who have already graduated? Does the school pride have to suffer?

Siblings who go to the same/different schools?

Transcripts that show 2 different schools?

What about the Somali, Canadian, French, and other language students? Do we add a foriegn word to the school name for each foriegn language spoken at the school? Who decides if someone is worthy of inclusion, and the next person is worthy of exclusion?

School names shouldn't be changed with every little whim that comes along.

just me

Wait... Everyone who isn't white at this school is an illegal immigrant???

Next year, that is some slippery slope my friend...maybe you need to step away from the ledge.

Go Dixie Sol!!!

Better Idea

Rename the school-"Polictically Correct Elementary School" and have the name written in English, Spanish, and whatever other languages you can fit in the sign. Also, fire all white teachers whose ancestors were from Europe, especially Great Britain. Oh, and don't forget to fire anyone who lived south of the Mason Dixon Line. Please make sure that all books, signs, everything in the school be written in Spanish with the Mexican flag posted and pledged to daily. That should make some of the people happy. Of course, if that does not work, succeed from the Union and become a state of Mexico or Venezuela. That should solve this high priority for St. George's School District and parents.

Utahans for ignorance are out today. The Colorado River is a Spanish name. What about San Juan and Santa Clara? Then there are the La Sal and the Abajo Mountains? I forgot Escalate.

To Patriot,

I understand there are serious problems our nation faces dealing with illegal immigration. However, I think changing the name of an elementary school does little harm. Rather, it teaches our children to better accept people of differing backgrounds and opinions. You were blessed to be born into this wonderful country (and please don't say I am anti-American. I love this country!) but what makes you think others shouldn't have the same opportunities as you? Without a doubt, we need to crack down on illegal immigration but there are many wonderful people that have come to America legally and are now living their dream. That's why I love America. I understand some of the points you brought up in your previous posts, but please have understanding for my viewpoints as well rather than just putting me down.

I don't have a problem with Dixie Downs changing it's name. I am sending my son to kindergarten there next year, and yes we are doing this "on purpose". We lived in Southern California for six years and personally I think diversity is great. At the end of the year my son will have two languages under his belt. I'll take that any day. Oh, and when the Chinese immersion high school opens you can believe that my kids' names will be first on the waiting list.
