Having been born and raised on the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, I solidly agree with Mr. Cuch. His position allows him to see firsthand the non-Indians' lack of understanding and disregard for Indian Tribes and people.
The Indian use and occupancy of this country predates the arrival of the Europeans, the Spanish and other peoples. Indian Country predates what is known as the United States. Indian traditional governments were the models for the Europeans who wrote the U.S. Constistution.
The U.S. - Indian story is not pretty but it is the history of the United States. students need to learn that our Indian Reservations were the models for the Japanese Interment Camps during World War II and that Hitler used the U.S. treatment of Indians as his
model for the Holocaust.
Thank you KUED for your companion series on Utah's Indian Tribes. With efforts like your's perhaps we can all achieve better understanding and compasion for one another.
I thought the series "We shall Remain" would have
been excellent if all the true storis of the Ute Indian Tribe had been told.
I'am a "Terminated Mixed Blood Member of the UTe
Indian Tribe" and no where in any of the series do i hear anything about the Terminated Mixed Blood
Members of the Ute Indian Tribe of Utah.
Why?
Its a National Disgrace that Congress, BIA Utah others continue to turn a blind eye to a Termination
of a group of American Indians Right here in utah,
that was terminated "55" years ago. and their termination continues to this day. other tribes
were terminated and either reinstated or at least
fedrally recognized... we haven't recieved neithe,
we live as if it was still 1954.
We are apart of the UTe Indian Tribe. when the termination laws came into effect the "whole" Ute
Tribe was to be terminated.. Public Law 671 called
for the "whole" Ute Tribe to be terminatead not
just a fourth of that tribe.
The Ute Tribe Could still be terminated if this
bill is not repealed.
Come on PBS tell the story of the Terminated Indians
and thier plight for freedom.
Thanks for making the series. I'm sorry I missed it on Monday night. Native American history is a big part of Utah's history that is mostly overlooked. We must not forget any part of our history.
I loved the seriries "We shall remain" but i do
have a qustion about the "Terminated Mixed Blood
members of the Ute Indian Tribe of Utah."
I would like to know why they were not included in
the series with the Ute Indian Tribe... after all
the Terminated Mixed Blood People are is the Ute
Indian Tribes people. I feel if history is going to
be told, they need to include these people. Thier
Identity was taken away from them.. but they continue to live like indians.
Could someone tell me why nothing was mentioned about the"Terminated" Mixed Blood Members of the UTe
Indian Tribe, and why the Ute Tribe hates to recognize their own people?
I think it would be great if "Public broatcasting
service" who works on donations and grants would
do a series on nothing but the "Termination of
American Indians, who have suffered emensly becaue
of termination laws.
Thank You,
Malcene
Right on. About the Termination of the Mixed Blood Utes, ( Uinta Band ). Which i`m a part of. What Forrest Cuch, And PBS, and others, should do, is do a Better job of researching this problem. After all Forrest Cuch, Has a Half- Brother, and Two Half-Sisters, and other relatives Terminated. And the word going around lately, is that the Ute Tribe is Going to open for enrollment again. This means that there will be more Mixed- Bloods put on the roll.. I loved the opener on Monday Night. We shall remain
Great job Forrest and KUED!
"Yagahway, yagahway!" Cry, crying around." The Ute old folks would say, about the terminated mixed bloods when they started complaining about what happened to them, which just started when the children of those oringinally terminated are becoming adults. They forget that their parents had a choice and when they aeen that they were getting money and land then they made the choice for termination. Even full-blooded Utes terminated themselves and moved off of the reservation and made a living for themselves and were successful. I am full-blooded Uintah Ute, I speak the Ute language, I practice my spirituality, and live my Ute values, beliefs and cultural practices EVERYDAY. I worked for the non-Indian, wore suits and used his language and I still had ties to the Ute sommunity. Now, I live and work on the reservation, by choice and still pay taxes. Come on now, mix-bloods! It's time to start doing something for yourself, instead of crying around, use that energy for positive development for yourself or your group. Stop criticizing the Ute Tribe, take a good look at yourselves. Even you people can't get along with each other.
