Nice public safety. let the runners run through traffic on their own. Makes me feel safe when I travel to SL knowing that the police doesn't care about safety.
is non essential, you choose to run. Use the sidewalk moron. How bout realizing that the tax payers that live in the city are paying for you to prance around slc in your running attire. The police care about public safety but I guess If you run in the middle of the street without traffic control YOU are the one who doesnt care about safety.
Public safety won't be an issue because the permit to run through South Salt Lake hasn't even been approved. According to another article, this company had over a year's notice to pay the police department and still submitted a check 5 days late. Why should taxpayers fund a private, for-profit event? My guess is that the marathon will be cancelled if the check to South Salt Lake doesn't clear. They've said that their officers won't staff the route, but if Devine hires other officers, they can have the permit. I guess it's just wait and see if the check clears. This company is a joke!
For us non-marathoners this race is one big headache. I live in the race area and from Friday night until Saturday afternoon I cannot get anywhere from my house because of the road closures. I, and members of my family, have commitments on Saturday and I don't know how I am going get to any of them. This year is particularly difficult with I-80 being inaccessable. The idea of using taxpayer money to fund this huge inconvenience is infuriating. Hats off to Salt Lake County and South Salt Lake for making race promoters pay for this mess. Hopefully the race will be bankrupt and not return next year. Note to b-list marathon runners: it is not a moral victory if you complete the course 5 or 6 hours after the race begins. Its just an inconvenience for the rest of us to try to avoid hitting you.
My wife and I travelled to SLC several years ago to run the race. The marathon brings in out of towners that normally wouldn't vist SLC and our money. We spent 4 days in the city supporting your businesses. Not sure on your state laws, as they seem to be outdated, but why not move the race to a Sunday morning like most big city races if that is allowed.
Sorry, "make them pay," but I would be pretty dang proud of myself if I could run 26.2 miles period, moreso if I could in 5 hours. I hate to break it to you, but most people who run marathons aren't trying to come in first place.
I'm sorry that life is inconvenient--but hence the phrase "that's life." I used to live on the Days of '47 parade route and that was rather inconvenient. But it was one day a year. Suck it up. A little planning on your part can alleviate a lot of the inconvenience.
The marathon brings in tourism dollars and respect to the city. Devine Racing has major issues and should probably be kicked out, but the Salt Lake Valley should continue to have a marathon.
People complaining about a couple of days of inconvenience! wow I had a house on the main intersection in Garden City (Bear Lake) 3-4 MONTHS of the year I was lucky to be able to even get out of my driveway. 2 days is nothing.
It sounds like Devine Racing has managerial issues, but for South Salt Lake to withhold traffic control for their portion of the race would be a public relations faux pas. Keep the marathon but get rid of Devine Racing. The St. George marathon manages to stay solvent with a lower entry fee and no payouts to race winners. St. George also has no problems filling their available slots and for the last several years have regretfully "cut" willing marathon participants. SLC is too great of a city to not have an equally successful marathon, but Devine has to go.
Some of the less than positive remarks are just typical of some individuals in this city , not a majority , never the less , when outsiders read these , it doesn't encourage others to visit SLC.
The ones making these complaints are just a bunch of whiners. The Huntsman Cancer Institute benefits from participants donations for cancer research. So don't complain , do something like make a donation. You might need assistance in the future so get a grip.
