Chief Burbank has already stated that he will not enforce immigration laws, so why should he get any more money?
He obviously made the wrong decision by refusing to take action that would target a group of criminals who should not be here in the first place, thus making OUR crime problems worse than they should be.
Maybe that just ensures job security for him.
He can fix his current problem by just deciding not to waste time enforcing other laws, since he has that mindset anyway.
Put all the cops doing parking enforcement back to work on real crimes. Throw a bunch of his paper pushers at headquarters back on the streets to chase crooks. Put the public affairs guy back in a patrol car. Let the Chief himself do the press stuff. (He seems to really like to get himself in the press anyway, so eliminate the Public Affairs job entirely.)
Obama is sending tons of "FREE MONEY" to hire more cops, so there is some help coming. Of course, us taxpayers will be paying for all that "FREE MONEY" plus interest for decades, and thus unable to afford any higher local taxes.
do we need to hire new police anyway? They are not here to enforce the law.
Why don't you run for Political office and see if you could come up with a better altenative to get things run smoothly. It seems like you have all the answers.
I live in Southern California where we have drive by shooting every week. So don't complain.
My son is a Salt Lake City Police Officer. He has frustrations just like everyone else. However, the frustrations are with the criminal population. In January of this year, he told me that when they start each year with case numbers for the arrests they make. They start with the #1 and number consecutively from there. By the end of January in good ol' Salt Lake City they were in the 4000's. Why don't we get upset with the criminals instead of the Police. My guess is that the individuals who are so angry with the chief are a part of the criminal population. Most probably drugs or DUI's.
Focus your anger in the proper direction and maybe some things will be resolved.
If the police are not here to enforce the law then what do you think they do?
Enforcing the immigration law would force police to racially profile people which is unconstitutional, this is the statement Chief Burbank is trying to get across.
If an illegal immigrant is arrested for breaking the law he/she will be deported.
You can't expect the police to stop every Mexican they see and ask for their identification and papers, that would be a violation of their rights. There are Mexicans living here legally who would be affected. What about their rights?
Less cops, less traffic tickets
you got to ICE, ICE ...BABY!!
under the terrorism act of or after 9/11 , we as legal citizens lost alot of rights...it is not unconstitutional to ask anyone for proper id,,go ask the mid eastern looking people...now real question is who is running the country for us..the illegals or the legals and who foots the bill?
I keep hearing that it is unconstitutional. However, no one ever gives the Supreme court case where it was declared so. Its certainly not spelled out in the constitution so it would take a ruling by the Supreme court. I dont think its happened, I could be wrong and if anyone gives me the case I will be happy to recind my opinion that while I can be offensive, especially to the people targeted, it is not unconstitutional or illegal.
As long as the majority of people entering this country illegally are hispanic then racial profiling will be part of the equation. Deal with it.
since all of the illegals won't be committing any crimes with Mr. Burbank on the job. I guess we can just fire most of the cops on the force, anyway.
Doesn't everyone feel safer with a cop in charge that won't enforce the law?
Good maybe they will use the existing officers more wisely now. Fri / Sat nights on State street they have so many cops there pulling people over. UHP,Sheriffs,Murray Police,Salt Lake police. It's a joke, but wait this article did say it costs lots of money to operate the department. Now I get it, we are revenue pure and simple.Easy money!!
Put all the people with rank and the supervisors out on the street to work, there are too many administrators sitting at their desks pretending to work!
regardless if you like Police or not, they make the difference to the way "we" live, work and play and what the other side is like (Mexico). Have you seen the chaos in Mexico? oh... and the Police chiefs opinion is exactly that... his!!! believe it or not but Police Officers are already over worked enforcing your car accidents, neighbor problems, and barking dog calls. Do you really think they have additional time to stop everyone of Latino decent and see if they have papers??? come on.. how many of you leave the house and forget your ID, driver's license. should we throw you out of the country? give the Police what they want more bodies (Officers) more cars, more equipment, oh and a Police statation worthy of being called that! then you can demand great things from them! but its more important to pass public money to feeding the birds, and adding to the zoo! think about that next time you call for Police service. Bottom line is Police are always going to be necessary, and like it or not your one day going to have to call them, and hopefully they come running.
you all are stupid.. the police officers are already underpaid and overworked. anyone who disagree's with me is under educated.
i agree, if people weren't so stupid we wouldn't need police, but people are very stupid, and some maybe a little communist by the sounds of these comments. so hire a bunch of cops and keep doing what your doing.
