The answer is to provide universal coverage to all citizens and legal residents. Then it doesn't matter who lives with whom and what their relationshiop is. We need to cover all with basic health care. I hate to see the government administering it, but they could make it possible for private insurers to handle all of the people, paid by taxes. We are already baying for many programs through tax dollars besides our own premiums, deductibles and copays. If universal coverage were adopted, the moneys would be collected altogether and a few would not be subsidizing others - everyone would participate in paying for this benefit. We could drop the issue of "gay partner benefits" and fill a huge gap in our society.
But, in absence of this, it seems logical that other family members should be added to existing plans since many are returning to the nest due to employment issues, too-low salaries, and homelessness. Why add the burden of no health coverage or care to the equation?
This could be a temporary measure until better legislation happens.
