NO PITCHING!!! | 10:38 a.m. April 2, 2009
Both Timp and LP are going to have a REALLY hard time in the state playoffs without any pitching. In baseball (especially high school) pitching is the BIG difference maker when it comes to the state playoffs where everybody can hit. The team that has a pitching staff that can at least hold the opposition under 5 or 6 runs going to prevail. Good grief, how do you give up that many hits ? Granted both LP and Timp can hit the ball well but how would you like to be LP and score 18 runs and still lose the game? Yikes. In past years (2005-2008) most Timp/LP games were low scoring games because both teams had good pitching - apparently those days are long gone.
sounds like a football game | 10:48 a.m. April 2, 2009
This sounds more like a football game! Lots of fun for the fans (unless your son was a pitcher). Both teams can obviously pound the ball but when you give up 35 hits you've obviously got a BIG problem on the mound. You can't win a championship without good pitching.
Lone Peak | 11:34 a.m. April 2, 2009
I know it is early but Lone Peak cant afford another game like this. When only 3 region 4 teams make the tourney this year LP has to do a better job with their pitching.Spanish,AF,Timp,Lone Peak.Scary to think but my prediction is LP will be on the outside looking in.With only 10 region games they all become big now.

People have to relize it was very cold and both teams had a hard time throwing strikes with anything other then fastballs. As the weather improves both these teams pitching staffs will be must better. Most fans left the game frozen I would suspect.
Anyone else | 12:19 p.m. April 2, 2009
Timp has rhett, do they have any one else?? They brought in two young guys at the Riverton game but they were not all that great. Just wondering if they have anyone else?
Both teams will be fine | 1:58 p.m. April 2, 2009
Conditions were bad and Lone Peak can really hit the ball. The same pitcher who started for Timpanogos yesterday held Cottonwood to one run (in 5 innings) and they only scored two runs in a nine inning game. He also shut out Northridge. I think yesterday was a testament to how good of a lineup Lone Peak has plus the terrible conditions pitchers from both teams faced.
Are you kidding?? | 4:29 p.m. April 2, 2009
Give up 20 plus and that is a "testament" to how good Lone Peak is....
Be fine??? | 5:32 p.m. April 2, 2009
no matter how you slice it - bad weather or not - 18 runs is 18 runs and no pitcher worth 2 cents will give up 18 runs even in 30 degrees temp. LP is worse giving up 21 runs. Good grief, both teams must have freshman on the mound.
LP better hope for pitching | 5:39 p.m. April 2, 2009
LaHargoue better hope that he finds a pitcher before the rest of the region wars begin or else LP will be scoring 20 runs a game and losing and find itself out of state for the first time.
Re: Be fine??? | 12:07 a.m. April 3, 2009
"no pitcher worth 2 cents will give up 18 runs"

Good thing is wasn't just "one" pitcher for either team. Games like this have happened before in high school baseball and they will happen again. It seems like everyone is reading too much into this one game when it was clearly not the norm for either team. Look at their past scores and continue to watch them throughout the season and everyone will realize this was a one time thing. They are two of the best teams in the state and they will continue to prove that.
Re: NO PITCHING!! | 12:07 a.m. April 3, 2009
Both teams threw their aces today with Nelsen and Stephan going all seven and it was a classic pitching dual. Those two pitchers can beat anyone in the state.

If these teams are so bad I wonder what that says about the rest of the teams they have played this year?
Yeah Right | 7:23 a.m. April 3, 2009
Classic pitching dual 21 to 18.
classic pitching dual? HA! | 8:35 a.m. April 3, 2009
"Both teams threw their aces today with Nelsen and Stephan going all seven and it was a classic pitching dual. Those two pitchers can beat anyone in the state."

say what?? A classic pitching dual?? HA HA!! More like "batting practice" wouldn't you say? Speaking as a former high school and college pitcher as well as the father of a son recently pitched in region 4, I will say with no reservation that a pitching staff that gets pounded like this is NOT a good staff - warm or cold weather. In cold weather, your velocity may decline maybe a couple of mph and your consistency in hitting spots will also suffer a bit but that shouldn't open the flood gates to the opposing batters to a hit - fest. 35 hits and 40 runs is like a defense in football giving up 60 points and 700 yards to the opposing offense. As far as these two pitchers beating anyone in the state - that's a bit laughable as well. These two teams are going to score a lot of runs this season but they will struggle in the state tournament when pitching DOES matter.

When the earlier comment was mad about a classic pitching dual he was talking about the game after the 21 to 18 game which ended 4 to 2. Learn to pay attention to what is going on you two dough heads.
Classic Pitching duel | 9:59 a.m. April 3, 2009
Classic pitching duel was referring to Thursday nights game at Lone Peak. not the slugfest at Timpanogas. Same two teams with their aces on the mound. Totally different Game. Timpanogas won 4-2. Nelson gave up only 3 hits and Stefan gave up only 5. It was a great game. Still tough weather conditions. It rained the entire time, however it was not nearly as cold. Both teams will be fine...
Hard Fought game on both sides. A couple of lucky bounces made the difference for Timpanogas with bases loaded a grounder that would have been an out to end the inning was pounded off the plate. It bounced a mile in the air and everyone was safe with runners scoring by the time the ball came down.
Talk about bad Luck... or good luck depending on which team you are on...Good luck to both teams, Classy acts on both sides.

LP in trouble for state | 10:35 a.m. April 3, 2009
LP losing both games against Timp is a tough blow. LP needed to win at home getting a split. With only 3 teams making the playoffs from Region 4, LP needs to now get sweeps over AF or PG which will be tough. LP has never missed the state playoffs in baseball so hopefully this won't be the first.
One good team missing state | 10:44 a.m. April 3, 2009
After LP dropped two to Timp I am thinking AF, PG or LP is going to be missing state this year since only 3 teams qualify. LP has the pressure right now being in the hole at 0-2 in region. In a region this good, you really need to win at home if you hope to make state. LP has never missed state in baseball to my knowledge.
actually LP must sweep .... | 10:49 a.m. April 3, 2009
Timp and SF will lock up the first two playoff spots in state and the third will be a dog fight between LP, AF and PG. LP (now 0-2) needs to sweep AF and PG if they want to secure that third spot.
baseball fan | 11:17 a.m. April 3, 2009
to the comment about a couple of lucky bounces made the difference for Timpanogos..............there's always a reason. One of the runs for LP was "lucky" as well. Your runner advanced from 1st to home on different errors to score your second run. Lucky for LP.
3 things | 12:03 p.m. April 3, 2009
First regarding the "former high school and college pitcher." Thanks for the breakdown chief, next time we need some "insider" pitching advice we'll ask you to comment again.
Second, I think people are putting a little to much on winning at home. Its not like there is a real home field advantage in region 4 high school baseball. You ought to be able to win on the road just as easy as at home.
Third, You can call that high chopper ground ball "lucky," But how did they load the bases up in the first place?
Timp 2-0, Lone Peak 0-2 | 12:08 p.m. April 3, 2009
Great start for timp! Not so much exuberance from Lone Peak fans anymore huh?
They do have the bats to battle back and take a top 3 spot though.
And thanks to Uncle Rico for the cold weather pitching breakdown .
Awefully Early | 2:26 p.m. April 3, 2009
Good Greif it's only the first week of region. Every team in Region 4 with the exception of maybe Lehi, has a legitimate shot at those 3 spots. AF, PG, SPANISH, TIMPANOGAS and Lone Peak can beat up on each other on any given day. There will be more losses to come for all involved. I wouldn't count anyone out at this point.
AF | 3:45 p.m. April 4, 2009
you cannot count anyone out now.. and it seems like everyone is ruling out american fork by saying lone peak has to sweep them.. pg maybe not.. but quit ruling out AF because they have beat up 3 top 15 schools this year. Stop talking about how LP is going to get in and give af some credit because they are going to keep proving themselves
