I wish Waddoups would quit protecting and defending Buttars. Sen. Buttars is an embarrassment to this state.
may not have been wise, given to whom it was said, and certainly not politcally correct. However, the breakdown of the family has brought more than one civilization down. And with the huge increase in families without fathers, rampant immorality, child abuse, and serial relationships, we are certainly in trouble.
Why are we so intimidated that we are afraid to take a stand for the traditional family?
Happy Birthday Chris. It looks like you will be giving and not getting this year.
If Buttars is doing his best to represent the people of the state, he's not doing enough. He needs to represent all of the people, not just those with whom he agrees.
I don't like Senator Buttars' comments or attitude, but where does censorship end? In a democracy issues are settled by votes. Unfortunately, we must protect his right to make a fool of himself.
Tolerance goes both ways. Buttars should be able to speak his mind like the homosexuals do.
this baby is......... nevermind. That would just be in bad taste, right Buttars. I am glad South Park has a character named after you. At least your are not the biggest threat to America
reps serve only 2 years per election cycle, right? his words are pretty much public knowledge now. if his constituents don't like him, they should vote him out. patience is the best option...
Resign and end with a little respect before you continue your path off the deep end
It is possible to have strongly held beliefs for which you are willing to advocate, and still be sensitive and eloquent in your speech and other communications, especially in a position of public trust.
Buttars is just insensitive and disrespectful.
Fight for what is right, but do it in a respectful manner. He is not capable of doing that, so he gives all conservatives a bad name.
He needs to go.
Any public support of homosexuality is just plain sick and wrong! Homosexuality is a perversion. There is no other way to look at it. Buttars has done nothing wrong. If anything, we all should be supporting him and giving him kudos for upholding the higher moral ground.
Of course he has a right to say anything he wants. Nobody is denying that. But aren't conservatives always telling us that actions have consequences? He can say what he wants, but that doesn't mean he can retain the privilege of some of his committee assignments.
Yes Butters was offensive - but no more so than some of the hate based statements that dribble from the Human Rights Campaign or Prop 8 opponents (or even Rocky Anderson - who was glossed over and propped up by the Tribune).
Should we punish them too? I am more annoyed at the double standard than the actual statements.
I have been commenting on this issue for a few years now. Vote out the incumbents nationally and locally voters. They either play our game (the voters) or their gone. Also whle we are at it lets kick these sleasy lobbyists completely out of government affairs, and their earmarks! Time has come politicians to pay for the music you have been dancing to for way, way too long.
The stated agenda of the homosexual lobby is to destroy the foundational institutions of our society - family structures, religion, free speech, social mores.
Tell me again how that is different than radical Islam? Oh yeah. The gay lobby doesn't yet say 'accept us or die'! They just use intimidation, extortion, violence and suppression/denial of Constitutional rights.
Like when they scream at opponents that they should die and not reproduce, or they hang opponents in effigy, or they run smear campaigns to destroy the lives of their opponents, or when they vandalize opponent's property, or fake terrorist attacks on their opponents, or when they shout down any pulic demonstrations against their lifestyle.
Butttars' analogy may have been imperfect. But it is not that far off.
Love Buttars or hate him, it doesn't matter. The elction process is by districts for a purpose. If Buttars were running for office in a district including the avenues of SLC, he would be defeated in a landslide, but in the district he represents, he is their choice. You may disagree with their position, but yoiu don't live or vote in that district. He was nor elected to represent you.
In addition, just because you oppose a certain position, event vehemently, doeas not give you the right to censure that opposing view. That Buttar's comment were "insensitive" or politically incorrect, goes without saying, but he was elected to represent a point of view. If his constituents re-elect him to support their point of view, no one has the right to deny them their representation any more than they have a right to silence yours. You o crying for the head of your opposition ought to be smart enough to realize that your position may be politically incorrect someday, and you will want your position heard. Who will be shouting you down then? You who cry for rights need to allow others the same voice.
If Its True... Are trying to do a April Fools Day Prank on us all??? You can't be Serious. I think you need to back up your hate Prove that these things actually happened and the Gay community perpetrated them I will make list of all the things that so called religious people have done to the gay community.
Am I the only one who see the double-entendre in Buttars' statement "the greatest threat to America going down"? Talk about a Freudian slip!
The majority of Utah people support punishing Buttars? This sounds like a waste of time. Would the majority of Utah people support equality instead? That would be better!
@anonymous 8:32,
our comments are flawed in a couple of ways. First, it isn't just conservatives who believe that actions have consequences.
Second, just because a representative holds a view different from yours, he should be stripped of his assignments?? How so? He was elected to represent the people who elected him in his district. That is the job of a representative. The Mayor represents all those in his city. A Senator represents all those in his state, but a representative's job is different. That is why there are two house of the legislature, to better spread equal representation. I feel like the defense attorney who is defending someone I know is guilty, but in our system, that person is still entitled to defense. Hate him if you will, but Buttars is doing his job. To silence him, demeans the system upon which you also depend for your representation.
In our state legislture is an openly gay person in an important position and assignment. Since many disagree with his views, should we demand that he be removed from his position?? Of course not! Looks different from the other shoes, doesn't it?
