Gretzky | 10:15 p.m. March 31, 2009
blah blah blah blah....let's see Kentucky just agreed to pay nearly 4 million a season to Memphis' coach eclipsing most football coaches' salaries. BYU is a nice team but will never be great as long as they see "getting to the tournament" as the goal. BYU needs to be like Duke and NC...final four or the season was a waste attitude.
TC | 1:39 a.m. April 1, 2009
Yes it was a good season. The biggest wins of the season were Utah and New Mexico... but they were at home, and the cougars are expected to win at home. However, there were no standout wins. A win over ASU, Wake Forest, or UNLV would have been impressive. I don't think the Cougars were any better of a team at the end of the season than they were at the beginning of the season. I won't blame any of that on coaching. The coach is not the problem. I would just like the cougars to have a more aggressive attitude on the court. It was very rare that "the big 3" all performed well in the same game. Jimmer was the most aggressive and showed the most will to win out of all the Cougar basketball players.

I don't see any dropoff in the quality of the players for next year and there is a lot of potential. Hopefully next year's Cougars can be much more aggressive and perform better in the big games (that includes the MWC and NCAA tournaments.)

Plaisted really looks good in a NBA uniform doesn't he????? Where's the guy playing, Russia, Greece, Israel????

The guy should have stayed at BYU for another year, but when you have someone that see's the "LOOT" its forever tempting to flee. Shawn Bradley didn't pan out so well either, nor Hansen.......Ainge, Kite and Roberts are really the only good things to come out of Provo and they completed their 10 years at BYU.

Dr. C | 4:42 a.m. April 1, 2009
Gretzky's comment is blatantly ridiculous. BYU has no chance of being a Duke or North Carolina -- or a Kentucky.

Rose has done an outstanding job. The Cougars have performed well. Yes, they need to overcome that dismal NCAA Tournament record. Eventually they will break through.

But BYU relies on and recruits top LDS kids. The best of that group are unlikely to go to BYU -- just as in football. The great basketball stars in the country don't see Utah as an attractive setting to live in or to attend school.

I am a long time Cougar fan. I enjoy the effort the team puts forth. I am disappointed when BYU gets outrecruited by Stew Morrill in Logan for LDS talent, but I have no delusions about BYU's athletic future. I enjoy victories, and am amazed that BYU has done so well. . .

Next year's team should be solid but unspectacular. I expect another run at a conference championship and hope that the Cougars can win a couple of games at the big dance. But BYU will never be in the same category as Duke or North Carolina.
Jeff | 4:45 a.m. April 1, 2009
The Y needs to at least be as successful as Gonzaga with NCAA success in the West since that should not be that hard for the Y which is a bigger school, has better facilities, the Y has more fans, and should be able to recruit better players than Gonzaga also.
Deja vu | 5:41 a.m. April 1, 2009
I've watched BYU sports for 40 years. It's always the same old story. Nice season (or a few moral victories) but they never win a big one in the post season. Sure, there was the Cotton Bowl in '96 and the Elite 8 in 1981. After that it is slim pickings.

This isn't just a case of a poor school who always gets the short end of the stick. We don't step it up or get super stoked for the post season - EVER. The other teams use the season as a warm up. We see it as the end.

I wonder if we suffer that syndrome in other areas of life - happy just to show up at our jobs, service projects, family outings. Are we really known for excelling at anything?? I know alot of non LDS that live the same kinds of values - but with more passion and excellence. Why is that??
Anonymous | 6:47 a.m. April 1, 2009
Rose is a good coach, BYU is a good program. But BYU will not be a Duke or UNC, or even a UCLA in the foreseeable future. Too little speed, and the elite players won't attend BYU. It would be nice to see them have more killer instinct to get them past the first round, but it is important to keep perspective: Sports is just entertainment, nothing more, except to make money for the schools at the expense of the athletes.
Where's the beef/athletes? | 6:55 a.m. April 1, 2009
BYU entrance requirements will never yield athletes to compete for any championships that mean anything. The MWC is way behind the Big East/ACC/Big 12/Big 10(11). Who wants to play in Utah or any of the mountain west states? Let's just enjoy what it is....just entertainment, and another thing to talk about around the water cooler. We can still be fans of whatever university we choose without badmouthing each other; that is so lame. Who cares how much Calipari is making at Kentucky?
nottyou | 7:02 a.m. April 1, 2009
It's like this: BYU has self-imposed limitations (religious standards, etc.) that will never allow them to compete consistently at the very top collegiate level. Occasionally, BYU may breakout in a game or two and defeat a big boy (like the mighty Utes, LOL), but basically they are limited much the same way the Air Force Academy is...self-imposed standards (size, academics, integrity, etc.) that must be kept to maintain the goals and direction of the program. As a result, they will never be able to, nor do they want to recruit the Neanderthal-type player that is required to compete year in and year out. But that is fine, we like it that way. Just a thought, boys.

Really | 7:22 a.m. April 1, 2009
I don't understand why they all think this was a good year. BYU's best wins were USU and Utah. Sure they played close to ASU and Wake, but does losing close make for a good year? They complain about USU's schedule, but of BYU wins, all were similar to the USU wins. USU just showed better in the tournament. BYU is a long way from the likes of final four or even sweet 16 teams.

Re: Gretzky 10:15 pm
The anonymity of the blog allows you to say ridiculous things without any accountability--that's OK. By your very immature attitude of "final four or bust" I suppose you feel the same about your personal life. After saying what you did, please write back and describe your life of success--you finishing in the top 2% of everything you attempt. Did you finish school in the top 2% of your class nationally? Is your salary today in the top 2% of Americans nationally? If you participated in any individual or team sports, did you or your team make it to the championship game each year? If not, what a waste you are.
YtxPat | 7:30 a.m. April 1, 2009
It was a very good season! To many fans expect a championship every year. For a MWC team, we are doing very well. If you want to watch NC or Duke, then get satelite. We don't need to be in Raliegh to see a good game. Only one team out or 64 makes it to the top. Does that make all of the other teams poor teams? Look at SDSU, they did a great job in the NIT. Baylor is just very hot right now.
GO COUGS!
DH | 8:16 a.m. April 1, 2009
I agree with the comments here. BYU will never be a top caliber team in either football of basketball. We don't get that type of athlete here. Our players are good but they are only good. Could they be more aggressive? Sure. Could they do a million different things better? Sure. But in the end they do not have the athletic talent that the bigger name schools get.

So lets enjoy what we have. They are very entertaining and our rilvaries are a lot of fun. The players should work hard and every once in a while they will rise up and knock off a big boy. But they are never going to be a top tier team, and the same is true of Utah and every other Mountain West team. We are in a smaller pond.
Successful season? | 8:29 a.m. April 1, 2009
What does it really say about your season when you bow out of your conference tournament after one win (as the #1 seed), and then bow out of the NCAA tournament in the first round?

BYU had a good record at 25-8, but what good does that do them when they look like schlubs in the post-season? It doesn't help recruiting, I'll guarantee you that.

25-8 may speak well to Dave Rose's regular-season coaching, but two straight post-season losses speak volumes about the quality of his post-season coaching techniques.
Re: Dr. C | 8:33 a.m. April 1, 2009
You write "I am disappointed when BYU gets outrecruited by Stew Morrill in Logan for LDS talent,"
When has that ever happened? Never, and it never will happen as long as BYU keeps Rose around.

AZ Copper Cougar | 8:41 a.m. April 1, 2009
I am a 50+ year BYU fan and appreciate what the Cougars accomplish both on and off the field. I believe BYU achieves more with what it has than almost any other school in the nation.

BYU is and will always be at a disadvantage in recruiting as compared to the elites in football/basketball and, therefore, will always have a difficult time breaking through to the elite level in post-season play.

Two main facts play into this:

BYU is a Mormon school and, therefore, is simply too much of a cultural/social/religious obstacle for most elite athletes to overcome.

BYU receives precious little national media coverage -- something elite athletes crave.

Neither of these is likely to change. And that's not a bad thing, it's just the way it is.

As stated above, BYU probably does more with what it has than any other university in the country. That's at least one definition of excellence.
RR | 8:52 a.m. April 1, 2009
Best win was probably USU. That was USU's yearly superbowl game, and they struggled to even take a lead. Beating SDSU twice was good too, considering they made it all the way to the NIT semifinal.
Dennis | 9:06 a.m. April 1, 2009
After the first few games the team was unbeatable. They were going to run the table and the national championship was in the bag.
That is the impression I got right here in the Des. News Sports comment section.
As a program, the BYU fans take way to much emotion in the wins, and either over react to a loss or apologize it away.
Rose is an average coach.
The program is a below average program that gets sometimes better than average results.
Recruiting is awful, facilities support and marketing is awful, and the entire program relies on being a "member" and rooting for the "church" team as it's foundation for support.
Only when Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Neptune and Kolob line up in a straight line will they win any kind of national championship.
Keeping things in perspective | 9:46 a.m. April 1, 2009

I totally support BYU basketball and football. I like the coaches, I like the young men, and I appreciate that the emphasis is where it ought to be--on character and living a productive life.

Sports is such a tempest in a teapot! So few athletes make a living at it, and among those who do, character seems to be the exception rather than the rule. Chris Miles is a good athlete--not great. That's OK. I care more about what he does for his autistic brothers than on how many points he scores--as long as he is giving his all on the basketball court.

By the way, BYU does get elite athletes from time to time. Tyler Haws, Fredette. Probably Abuo. And there is not a team in the country who wouldn't have a significant role for Jackson Emery. He is an amazing athlete and a better human being. We also have some elite athletes among our football players. They come because they share BYU's priorities. If they don't, let them go elsewhere.

In both sports, BYU will break through from time to time, and they will do it the right way.

I get a laugh out of people like Dennis; they love to critique and diss anything BYU. Everything in your post is typical of a hater and with the exception of your line about a National Championship (which will never happen in BYU basketball) there is not one thing in your post that is truthful. Thanks for taking the time to post though, I needed a good laugh this morning.
get a life , guys | 10:45 a.m. April 1, 2009
I'm a BYU fan and share in the disappointment regarding the poor finish of the football and basketball teams. But really, people, what does this say about your own values and life in general when all you seem to care about is how the local team is doing? Victory is so fleeting (except for the silly fans who desperately hold onto the memory of 1984 BYU football team -- as well as those who ridicule and minimize it). I love what Big Al wrote in an earlier post about Gretzky. Hmmm, and choosing the name Gretzky just shows how desperate you are to identify with a winner. I wish the anonymity of these posts could be wiped away so we could get a look at the posters and a glimpse into their lives. Maybe then we could begin to enjoy higher quality posts based on a better process of thought.
Question? | 10:55 a.m. April 1, 2009
Most LDS kids live in Utah, Idaho and Arizona. Are these other LDS players from other parts of the country and the world really better.

2nd question- BYU has 3 kids from Utah County on their roster. Is Utah County really that much better than the rest of the State? Also all their recruiting seems to be in Utah County with Davies, Collinsworth and Haws. I understand that they are very excited about these three, with good reason, they appear to have alot of potential, But are there not kids from other places in Utah who can play. Provo and Lone Peak both made it to the championship game, but lost.
Dennis RE:McKay | 11:01 a.m. April 1, 2009
Compare the program to the "big" schools and you'll find is laughably wanting.
But, you won't. You'll accept that fact that everything is the same everywhere.
It's NOT!
As a Utah fan, they have many of the same short comings. The difference is they've figured out how to win the occasional post season game, and, we love them if the win OR lose. Makes no difference.
At least | 11:13 a.m. April 1, 2009
it's a taste we're used to at the end of the basketball season here in BYU fan land. It might be different if we won tournament games every year and this year we just slipped. Then the taste would be nasty. But again, as a Cougar fan very familiar with this taste, it is a given that we have to prepare for it every year so it's our own fault if we don't close our mouths before having to intake the rot...

Some things are just going to happen every year - The Jazz will buckle under pressure and do nothing in the playoffs, the Cougars will lose in the 1st round of the NCAAs, and Ute fans will be ignorant, annoying, childish online commenters no matter the state of the Ute sports programs.
How far we've come | 11:23 a.m. April 1, 2009
Do people forget that during Steve Cleveland's tenure an NCAA tournament was a rarity? With Rose it has been a given. Hang with the program, and with this staff...they are good, and will be great.

We are talking about losing in the first round of the tournament after winning 3 straight conference titles(hasn't been done since the 30's). Amazing.
Re: Question | 11:28 a.m. April 1, 2009
No other high school players in Utah even compare to Tyler Haws, Kyle Collinsworth, Brandon Davies and CJ Wilcox. In fact, I'd say these four are as good as any high school basketball ever to come out of Utah. Unfortunately, the Utah teams lost out on Wilcox. He's a dandy and will be a star at Washington. Any team in the country would love to have Collinsworth. Haws is the top prize to come out of Utah for many years, so BYU did great to get him. Davies is good enough and big enough, that he'll be playing basketball for money someday.
Chris H | 11:35 a.m. April 1, 2009
To all the kool-aid drinkers as long as the fans are happy just being there, then things will never change. If that is case why not go the route of Ricks College and become BYU Utah and get rid of the sports and use the money for other things. If you don't care who wins then why keep score? This is College sports not JR Jazz. If you expect wins then you will get wins. If you are just happy with just being there then that is what you will get. Keep buying tickets and it will never change. Send a message stop drinking the kool-aid and expect more and you get more.
BYU has a good Program | 11:58 a.m. April 1, 2009
Rose has done a great job at BYU. He has finished with conference records of 12-4 13-3 14-2 and 12-4 with 3 straight regular season titles 3 NCAA appearances and 4 20 win seasons.

BYU is not able to recruit the top athlete, such as a Blake Griffin. But they do get good quality college athletes. Cummard was recruited by UCLA and ASU. Fredette was recruited by Syracuse and Wake Forest, JT was recruited by Pitt and Wash. And Chris Miles was recruited by Kansas, UCONN, and UCLA.

BYU did end another year in disappointment. And unfortunately that is what we will remember. BYU is not going to replicate programs like UNC, Kansas, UCONN, UCLA etc. But they do recruit and get some of the same athletes. And they can very likely have a post season run similar to teams like George Mason, Davidson, Xavier, or Gonzaga.

So to all the fans who want to be down on BYU BBALL. Remember where the program was 10 years ago, and where it is now. BYU has won or shared the MWC regular season title 6 times.
McKay | 12:25 p.m. April 1, 2009
Dennis, again that was laughable! You may love the Utes win or lose but you are the exception rather than the rule. Utah fans jump off the bandwagon faster than any fans I've ever seen. Just look at Utahs basketball and football attendance during the down years (with the exception of the BYU games) there are thousands of empty seats. I appreciate that you recognize Utah has some of the same challenges as BYU but to claim that Ute fans love their teams win or lose is downright comical
BYU doesn't compare to Gonzaga! | 12:30 p.m. April 1, 2009

True blue | 12:38 p.m. April 1, 2009
If you all were told that BYU would win 20 plus games and have another confrence title at the begining of the year you would have thought that was great. The problem is BYU does well and does well early and fans can not handle that. They played close to ASU and Wake and should have won. Because of that you all think a final 4 is at hand. They way over achieved this year just like the football team. Its hard to win in a tournament when you havent done in many years. It took Calipari 8 years to make it to the championship game at Memphis give Rose some time. They make one run and they will be like Gonzaga getting tons of respect out of a much weaker conf. then the MWC.
Go Cougars!

Gonzaga non-conference | 1:14 p.m. April 1, 2009
Oklahoma State, Maryland, Tennessee, Indiana, Washington State, Arizona, Connecticut, Utah, Tennessee (again), Memphis.

BYU doesn't have a non-conference like this.
to Losers | 1:26 p.m. April 1, 2009
The only place that the aggies can win is at home. A shaky team with delusional fans. Maybe you can schedule all WAC games in Logan and have the NCAA tourney there.
Question again | 1:28 p.m. April 1, 2009
I have heard they are all pretty good, but I tend to disagree with your 1st statement that no other kids in Utah even compare. I have been around High School Basketball all my life, and I have always believed that other Utah kids get overlooked for some reason. I don't think there is as much difference as most be think between these guys and some of the others who don't get mentioned. All four of those kids are Utah County Kids, Utah plays some pretty good Basketball outside of Utah County.
Re: Gonzaga non-conference | 1:33 p.m. April 1, 2009
Nope. They sure don't. If either BYU or Utah had Gonzaga's non-conference they would have eight losses right out of the box. Sorry. The Mountain West is mediocre at best, and bad at worst.

There really isn't any problem with the basketball team or the football team for that matter. Year in and year out they will almost always be a step or two above mediocre, (Nationally Speaking).

I am a BYU alum. I enjoy watching the Cougs but I do not ever expect more than what mediocre athletes can do. In this day, SPEED is what it's all about. SPEED is what the Cougs will never be able to recruit. Once you accept that fact, you can still enjoy watching Cougar Sports.

Stew Morrill is twice the coach Rose is. Three problems with the Zoo. Slow athletes, slow coaching, and poor coaching. The key to the big time is two things. A faster athlete between the ears and with the feet and a coach who can make adjustments. Rose in none of these things. He remains "on the bench" just like he was when he warmed the thing in Houston. Bench warmers, that's all the Zoo's got... Houston never won anything either.

Go Rebels, Utes, Aggies, etc.
Dear: to losers | 5:51 p.m. April 1, 2009
Did you watch the NCAA tournament??? USU was the only team from Utah that showed up, against a much tougher team than BYU or Utah. Stew Morrill could coach D Rose or Boylen into the ground. Did you see USU road record this year? and we all know that if Quayle was solidified as a USU starter the game in the ESA would have went totally different. Your best win all year was against USU no question. See in the spectrum this year. Can't wait to hear the excuses then.

Since the standard seems to be wins in the postseason (sorry Yewts, CBI doesn't count), remind me, what is Morrill's record in the NCAA tournament?

Poster at 5:51 p.m. is a typical USU fan. Ya you lost by fewer points than BYU did - something to be extremely proud of. But I guess when you come from Logan you have to look high and low to find something to be "proud of".

Want to know why you are never taken seriously???
