I don't see anything newsworthy in the article.

I don't see anything inspirational about her either. Brigham Young condemned her. Now you are putting her on a pedestal.

Emma was married to one of the biggest charlatans of the century, it could not have been easy for her.

Many of us have a testimony of the truthfulness of Joseph Smith. This testimony is borne of the Spirit of Truth which is given to those who seek it in total honesty. And then only upon conditions of total repentance.

Poor Emma.

More Mythology @ 2:28 p.m and Faye @ 2:37 p.m are the real charlatans here. They traffic in what they think are clever straw men which they tirelessly employ to persuade, or perhaps to dissuade, as the case may be, those whom they seek to influence.

To Thomas 3:25. Spoken like a true fanatic. If you had been born in Iran you would be testifying to that prophet. Learn to respect yourself and you will not have a need to worship others.

What else could we expect to hear from a male chauvinists within the church?

Don't worry women know the truth, Mr. Greg, rather you want to admit it or not. It's quite obvious to me that you are not going to see the side of a woman. And you intend to bash females who don't agree with you.

I too, feel deeply sorry for Emma Smith who was betrayed one 2 many times.

I have been a life time member.. But i'm getting just a bit shaky with guys like you around.

Church history has too many flaws in it and polygamy is one of the super big ones. Emma must have suffered tremendously and more than any of us can comprehend.

Judge not! Emma was an elect lady can't we just leave it at that?

Faye - one day you will either know the truth about Joseph Smith or not. One day you will pass on. If you die and never wake up, your anti-mormon attitude here in this life will not matter at all. But if you die and you do go to a spirit world and meet Joseph Smith, there is little doubt that you first thoughts may well be, oh my God, did I ever screw up or words to that effect. Will this happen, maybe? maybe not?

Hello, Ladies, I want you gals to realize that SOME LDS men will never admit to the wrong that was done to EMMA SMITH, because a very FEW men out there are narrow minded fools who believe that their own pleasures come first above all other things and that women have "no right" to feel hurt or depressed over their evil actions. I can tell you one thing, I do not intend to spend eternity being miserable while my husband pleasures himself with other women. However, I have a good man who doesn't believe in polygamy and he has said many times to me that he would rather not exist then to ever hurt me or the love we share so deeply, and we have been married 30 years.

Poor Faye and Poor Emma Smith who have both been mistreated by the male crowd. Shame on all you male heathens.

Dear Faye, You are just alright. Many of us see your side of things, so don't let the few on here brow beat you down. Rotten eggs come a dime a dozen.

To 4:54 You sound like you are a brainwashed dish rag. I guarantee you that Faye will do just find without all your malarkey head games.

@ Faye - Could be a surprise...
Pretty huge bet you're making. For all you know, you'll wake up and Zeus will be pretty ticked that humanity forgot about him long ago. Get real. There's thousands of gods, ALL of whom have conveniently forgotten to manifest themselves in reality.

This is an article on Emma Smith's letter to the Illinois governor to help her husband. Why all the mean attacks on this site? Emma stayed in Nauvoo. She did not go to newspapers and spew venom about the saints after they left Nauvoo. So why are you? None of us can understand what she went through, but one thing is most definitely clear- She loved Joseph Smith and he loved her. Let them be.

I really haven't read any comments that are accurate or informed when it comes to Joseph and Emma's relationship. If you want to understand the complexity of their relationship....you'll need to dig much deeper. It is a fascinating and interesting study of two very wonderful and strong people who played important parts in their respective roles.

Emma was one messed up woman! She NEVER supported Joseph's polygamy. After his death, she fought against it tooth and nail and even accused Brigham of starting polygamy. She left the Church. We call that "apostasy". She started her own Church with her son as the prophet.

So how can any intelligent member of the LDS church today dare call Emma "an elect lady"? "An inspiration"? That makes no sense!

If I apostatize from the Church, start my own, and accuse the successors of Joseph Smith of lying and adultery, would you call ME "elect" and an "inspiration"?

You see, the Mormon church is in a dilemma when it comes to Emma. If they condemn her for opposing Joseph's polygamy, and for leaving the Church, and for starting her own Church, and if they make her out to be a confused, emotionally traumatized (abused) woman, as the historical record COULD support, then all her "testimony" about Joseph's miracles and stature as a "prophet" must be dismissed!

So, in order to preserve her testimony of Joseph as a prophet, they have to ignore historical facts and make her out to be "an elect lady" and "an inspiration".
Stop this nonsense... | 8:54 a.m. March 26, 2009
I agree with poster 8:21

Brigham Young is the one who really started polygamy. He changed history on more than one account to suit himself. He disliked Emma Smith because she would not do as he wanted her to do. When will the church see Brigham Young in all his gluttony, and all the damage he brought down on the church. I know many dislike him in the church but stay quit.

To Anonymous,

We call it the "Emma Dilemma"

LOL!

Since Joseph Smith never had anything to do with polygamy, it is no wonder Emma wanted nothing to do with Brigham Young. He tried to legitimize this false doctrine by stating that Joseph claimed it came to him in a revelation. Odd that something this sensational was never produced during his lifetime, only after he was dead and could not defend himself against his accusers. Emma knew the truth and detested Brigham for his lies.
