Is this story accurate when it indicates that Haws played in a Varsity game in the 8th grade? Can you play highschool as an 8th grader? I thought you had to wait until you were in ninth grade at a minimum.

On behalf of BYU faithful everywhere-we are delighted that you followed in your dad's footsteps and chose the Y over bigger schools back east.

We are already imagining you in the lineup next season with Fredette/Jackson/Abouyo/Miles/Hartsock et al. You are inheriting a gigantic 17-year old "monkey" of NCAA one and dones-but we are confident that if anyone can take BYU to the next level of success-it will be this group of playmakers.

We have loved watching you this past four + years at LPHS and look forward to the next 6 years of your BYU career.

Tyler is a genius on the court, but his younger brother, TJ, is no slouch, himself. He's currently tearing up the seventh-grade ranks. He recently scored 47 or so points IN ONE GAME in my son's league. (My son scored...ummm...slightly fewer. Ahem.) Throw Marty into the mix, and we're looking at a Haws dynasty! Let me be the first to say: "Come to BYU, TJ! Keep it rollin'!"

Nice story and accurate as to the character of the Haws family. Their 7th grader TJ is an awesome player as well and will be a force in a couple of years on the high school scene.

The most impressive thing that struck me about Tyler other than his great athletic abiltiy in your article, was that he stayed and cleaned up the bus after others left---was a great peek into his character.

That simple act speaks volumes to me about character and selflessness and no gets there without good parents, and a good heart.

He'll make a great Elder. And an All American at the Y.

The past few years has been the mother load for basketball talent in Utah. When you look at Haws, CJ Wilcox, Brandon Davies and Kyle Collinsworth, all would be Mr. Basketball on most years. But there are so many very good players that it's hard to argue against anyone. Haws was the right choice, and in my opinion, is the best player I've ever seen play high school basketball in Utah. Next season, it's Collinsworth's award to lose, but I doubt he will. He'll have another great year and then people will be saying "who is the best player ever in Utah, Haws or Collinsworth?" We're lucky we've been able to watch these guys play.

Quality article. Haws sounds like a great player and person. This is a great pick up for BYU. I just hope he can get the team to play harder than the lax effort they ususally give on defense and in the tourney~!

The best "baller" Utah has ever had can only get to BYU? That explains why Utah and BYU both got bounced in the first round of the NCAAs... good, but not great.

When will Utah have a basketball player that gets recruited AND stars in the Big East or ACC. Where are our Louisville, Kansas, Kentucky, UNC recruits?

Wow...three Mr. Basketballs from Lone Peak, and all three of them played/are playing/will play for the cougs. And Lone Peak's been open for only eleven years. LP has four state titles in eleven years of existence, and has produced Coug greats Jackson Emery, Sam Burgess, and now Tyler Haws. They should rename LP "Brigham Young Prep."

Congrats to Tyler, and I agree with the previous poster...with a senior Miles, Jackson, Fredette, and Abouo (assuming JT doesn't come back...if he does, all the better if he improves his shot selection), next year should be special. Can you say "4-peat"?

Haws was recruited by Stanford of the pac 10 and Marquette. Brandon Davies was had offers from Arizona, Cal, and Gonzaga! Hmmm... you should follow recruiting more.
BYU just signed the most talented, most recruited class the state of Utah has ever had. BYU will be really good then next 4 years!

Probably not...the best recruits out of Utah, would be bench warmers at the other schools that recruited them. Only time will tell, but I don't think the Utah players are going to make the Y any better.

The reason this kid is such a phenom is because of his upbringing. His father, Marty Haws, was a sand-in-the-gut, death before dishonor type of point guard... and a class act to boot. Young Haws displays these same noble traits and it will be a treat watching him dismantle MWC patsies in years to come. Watch out yewties!

BYU still needs to recruite quicker and more athletic players or they will continue to get smoked in the NCAA. If this kid is half as good as everyone thinks he is then I want to see him lead BYU to a tourney victory.

When LP beat Viewmont a little old man wanted to meet Tyler. Tyler was the nicest kid and showed great respect as theis gentleman gushed. Seems like this kid has it together. And he chose the right school. Why go play for Stew and the Aggies? So you can also lose in the first round after popping off about the Big East?

Why play for Stew? Because he's the best coach in the state. He keeps a program at or above the level of BYU and Utah's with less talent. I can understand not wanting to live in Logan. Winter last 2 extra months and there isn't much to do, but what is there to do in Provo?

Nice to see that we will see another Haws boys around again. Marty was fun to watch and Tyler will too. Don't try to think too far ahead of yourself about NCAA Birth yet. One game at a time. I remember when Danny Ainge came to his MVP day to retired his Jersey at the MC and the announcer whoever was said that Austin will take us to the next level. Stew the best coach in Utah???? You are kidding right? He is a great coach and a heck of a contributor to the local economy in Logan, but best coach, not so much. He is 4th behind Boylan, Rose and Reid as SUU.

22 years as a coach. 1 Post season win. (NIT and NCAA combined) 1-13. He racks up wins over weaker team. His first 12 years as a head coach he had 20 wins 3 times. At CSU he didn't win a conference title in his 7 years there. The first 4 he finished below .500 in the conference.

I know BYU fans jump on Aggie articles and post comments, but if you look at most threads there is a SERIOUS inferiority complex for Aggie fans. Now you come on here and comment on an article on a great kid. Go back to the Aggie articles and comment on how Riley is a trader and will fall apart at the Y.

tyler played with my son, and my son asked for weekly reports on tyler and the team from his mission. Said "Dad, Tyler deserves anything and everything he gets, he is the most unassuming, humble, unselfish down to earth kid i ever played with. reminds me a lot of jackson, only ahead of him skill wise at the same age". Class from the word go. could have really inflated his numbers but did not push to score unless he had to. oh, and west jordan, he went to the dance 3 times, won two. you have a great coach, one of the best in the state, and great players, but as the only returning starter on his team this year, its amazing its Lone Peak you played. without tyler, you would have been playing someone else. Coach Lewis at lone peak knows how to develop players as a former college coach, and lone peak will still be around for years to come cause he does it from withing the boundaries, and the kids know his systems for years. wouldnt mind seeing west jordan and lp play every year. my two favorite programs in the state due to their coaches.

Every once in a while a kid comes along that is a little different.. Tyler Haws understands where the game of basketball fits in the whole scheme of life and knows that it is more important to be a good person(crazy huh!) We are lucky to have him part of our community just for his example and goodness. Way to go Ty

as good as the media has been to lone peak over the years (medias always do like to follow teams that win, cause it sells) dont feel slighted by not having Mr Basketball. in 2005 Lone Peak beat Bountiful with Aird, Payson with Newbold and Olympus with Green, and then Box Elder to win it all in 2005. yes, jackson emery was mr basketball that year, but the state championship team did not even have one first team player and they had 3 other players worthy of it, that bailed out jackson a few times when he had his "im Human" games both in reg season and playoffs,...cause coaches and media had to put players that went out in the first and second round on first team for some reason. (glamor names) Tyler deserves what he gets obviously due to the big picture of his success, but i bet you guys have the mvp, and one or more first teamers. sometimes its politics, and the glamor names that the coaches and writer pub have to be justified.
