To all of it. Life is too short to hate someone because of their team/colors/university/religion / lifestyle/politics/whatever. I need all the energy I would spend on hating to help me deal with my surprises. Ann is a great example of being proud of who she is while respecting others for who they are. And she makes me smile.

The whole story (most of the first book of Herodotus' history) is way too long for this. Even Solon's interchange with Croesus is way too long. But Solon gives the following to Croesus; "All the days of a man's life are 26,250; of all these days not one brings him anything exactly the same as another." We all spend our 26-thousand-odd days learning and relearning this. Lovely catch, Ann.

I haven't liked Steve Carrell in anything but Dan in Real Life (well, he was okay in Little Miss Sunshine, too), but his statement and Ann's elaboration on it are very helpful to me.

Ann - Surely you know that when BYU fans get serious about getting an education, they go to the UofU.

Thank you for your insightful article. My kids are ardent in-your-face BYU fans as well, but I'm trying to get them to ease up a bit on the UofU hating. I agree totally with Amen about life being too short to be negative about others. Sorry, Robert.
Incidentally, I share your feelings about Dan in Real Life. I didn't think I was going to like the movie, but I did.
