Yes, I remember Utopia. It is moving so slow that Qwest will have fiber optic to all the houses first.

It would be nice, but It could be years before most people in the areas that are supposed to get it get it. I am all for speeding it up, but why at taxpayer expense?

Gee, it would be great to get UTOPIA in OREM!!!

My section of Orem will not likely see this for years to come.
That's because I live in the high tech end where we get ANY service last.

As...

long as Utopia don't monopolized the market, I'm okay with it...

The Rest

What is the plan for the rest of Layton?

Let's hope it has improved

I signed up for Utopia in Orem a few years ago when it seemed too good to be true. It was. I did cable, internet and phone. The caller ID didn't work. Phone calls dropped about 50% of the time (no exaggeration!). You could not use touch tone phone services. The internet was blazing fast when it worked but it hung all the time. The cable was slow and unresponsive and the lineup was bad. The menus on the cable box made no sense. We suffered through it for 3 months and then ripped it out and went back to services that worked!

Do you work for Qwest? If so, how come Qwest hasn't started building their infrastructure 5 years ago? And if they are, why in only select cities? As far as I know, it takes a lot of money to do such a thing. On top of that, they already have to maintain an outdated system. Every cable from their C.O.(Central Office)to the last mile has to be replaced with fiber. How much do you think that will cost? Same thing with UTOPIA. That's why it's slow to get. And if the city doesn't sign up, they won't get it.

UTOPIA is a State agency. By law, they cannot be a Service Provider. UTOPIA can only provide the infrastructure. Therefore, there are 6 different Service Providers that customers can choose from that provide internet and phone. TV needs to be improved on with better equipment, since TV over the internet is a fairly new concept. They need to work out the bugs. These companies lease bandwidth from UTOPIA. Much like Qwest does with smaller telecom companies that provide high speed internet.

DSL, not Fiber

Following up on the first comment that claims that Qwest brought fiber to the houses first -- that is a completely incorrect statement. Qwest is not bringing fiber to the home, and has no plan to do so. The new "fiber based" service uses ADSL2+ over copper, and can push a maximum of 20 Mbps, and that only to a single digit percentage of subscribers that have the service available to them. Fiber to the home, as provided by UTOPIA, is much, much faster.

UTOPIA is great. I have had for one-year. TV selections are great compared to DTV or DISH. Phone is fine. Internet only goes as fast as site selected. Is good deal.

What about OGDEN!!!! We're dying up here!!!!

Come on UTOPIA! or North Ogden City!
